Quote: 657, ready for grading
The embattled college football player Jammerson Irving officially left the University at Buffalo today and declared for the DSFL draft this off-season, as his newly hired agent Bob Sugar released a short statement to the media last evening:
"Jammerson has profound and sincere regrets as to both the events leading up to his dismissal and the events afterwards. Jammerson is dedicated to becoming the best football player possible, and hopes to start fresh and strive daily to be a consummate professional. Jammerson will do whatever possible to succeed in the NSFL and any one who has met him knows that. We are all excited going forward and proving to the world the talent Jammerson possesses. Jammerson has one goal in life, and that is to become the best tight end in NSFL history. So today he is declaring himself for the DSFL draft and begins his journey as a professional football player."
The decision finally clarifies the direction of a college career that abruptly ended as just as it began to show the promise of dominance, due to multiple off-the-field transgressions that drew national negative attention on the small program tight end. After being dismissed from the University at Buffalo football team most observers expected Irving to transfer to a JUCO school, however already possessing the athleticism and size of a high draft pick, it appears Irving has decided to gamble on himself in hopes of getting drafted in the the upcoming DSFL draft.
Among scouts, there is much debate on the draft prospects of Jammerson Irving. This comes as no surprise - the Jamaican native's football journey has been quite unconventional and he is still an extremely young, raw, football talent; having only played the sport for four years. However, the potential upside of the young prospect is undeniable as he possesses not only size, strength, and pedigree - but also game tape that flashed dominance. In what would prove to be his last college game, Irving posted a 10-139-3TD stat line, which included the game winning touchdown catch versus Toledo in a nationally televised game. That catch broke into ESPN Sports Center's Top 10 Plays, rewarding Irving with viral fame that infamously turned negative after a subsequent arrest and social media gaffes followed days later. During the week that followed, Irving was suspended for the MAC championship game and subsequently dismissed from the football program.
The decision to turn pro is a curious one. First, Irving is only 19 years old after joining the University at Buffalo as an athlete at 17. Irving played both sides of the ball as a freshman and has only been a dedicated tight end for a single truncated sophomore college season. Second, while posting several highlight-reel catches, he struggled with consistency and the more nuanced aspects of the game. Most thought he would decide to continue to develop his game at the collegiate level, so the recent announcement has certainly raised eyebrows.
Washington Irving, Jammeron's father, is a former Jamaican national sprinter working at Guelph University as the head coach of the Men's Track and Field team. After dismissal from the football program, Jammerson Irving remained enrolled at the University at Buffalo through his sophomore year. Since, he is reportedly under a strict training program in Guelph designed by his father, which includes a absolute no social media policy. There is no question Jammerson needs not only to show elite athleticism in pre-draft workouts, but also reassure GM's his youthful transgressions are just that - youthful. It appears his father is taking no chances in this regard, and has set up a Guelph University first - an NFL Pro Day workout. The 19 year-old measures in at 6'6' and 252 pounds. That size will surely garner attention among DSFL GM's, but how they perceive his character will surely play an important roll asto when he will hear his named called, if it is called at all, on draft day.
