Earlier last week Edam Schafter reported that the Norfolk Seawolves were considering using their #1 OA pick in the DSFL draft on Allen Josh, but there has been new information suggesting that they might go another way instead. Insider sources say that Emondov Emoji is also being considered at the spot. Emoji joined the league around the same time that Josh did and so both have developed arpund the same amount since joining the league. So the first overall pick really isn't about talent, but rather who would be more useful to the team.
In a traditional sense most would jump at the opportunity to draft an all-star caliber line backer as they can easily lead the defense as a field general and fly all over the field making plays from sideline to sideline, but you cannot ignore the importance of a quality defensive back. With Emoji you are drafting a player of proven pedigree in a position that is very hit and miss when it comes to prospects, however with Josh you are drafting a player that may one day be a record holder and hall of famer. At this point it is more of a question of what you are losing by not drafting one instead of what you gain since they are both players with very bright futures.
If we look at the prospect board, one thing you will notice is that there are a lot less quality DBs than quality LBs, so that poses us this question, is Allen Josh really worth losing out on a position that can be quietly impactful? There will be no way that both players drop to the second round let alone the third round since the Seawolves are already locked into the second round pick with their co-GM. This puts the Seawolves into a really tough situation with their first pick, because if they skip out on Josh they can easily pick up an A- or B+ prospect at LB, but skipping out on Emoji might leave them with a C+ CB.
We were able to ask Emoji some questions in his recent post prospect bowl presser and these are some of his answers:
First he was asked: who should go first overall, you or Josh? He responded by saying,
"Listen, I'm sure Josh Allen or Allen Josh or whatever is a great player and all, at least I assume so seeing as he's the other player in this question, but clearly I would be the top player in this draft and any other name at number one is just wrong. I know the DSFL is all about the run game these days, but Josh isn't going to get you those turnovers. When you got these dudes trying to go 1 on 1 with Emondov Emoji you best bet I'm going to be the one coming away with the ball and most likely taking it back the other way. So ask yourself this, you want a dude making a ton of of tackles and possibly getting you sacks or you want a turnover machine? I heard Norfolk has a pretty competen GM so when 1.1 comes up on draft night I expect my name to be on that card."
The second question he was asked was: being connected to several NSFL GMs, what position do you feel is more important linebacker or cornerback and why? To which he replied,
"You see the NSFL is a different beast than the DSFL and being a conoseuer of both levels of the game at the top level CBs will be more valuable and I'm not just saying that becuase I am one. I mean you can have anywhere from two to five on the field at a time and maybe even seven if your GM gets extra spicy, but basically the NSFL is all about the passing game for the most part unless the quarterbacks are rookies. It's pretty uncommon to see only two receiver sets and because of that you need CBs to cover those dudes as most will be top end speedsters with great explosion off the blocks. So yeah if you were to ask me I'd take Emoji, I mean a cornerback, over a linebacker in a lot of circumstances."
We then reached out to Josh for comment on these aggressive accusations and he had the following to say
"That Emoji guy can talk all the crap he wants because at the end of the day we all know he is just a smiling poop face. He can be as cocky as he wants as desperate as he wants and as talented as he wants, but he will not remove me from my spot as first overall pick. I truly deserve to be recognized as the best player in this draft because I AM the best player in this draft. I bet he doesn't even make it as a first round selection in the upcoming NSFL draft either. The dude is weak, I know it, you know it, everybody knows it. He doubts my ability as a defensive playmaker? Just let him watch as I lead linebackers in forced turnovers this season. Let him watch as I lead the league in sacks this season. Let him watch as I lead the league in tackles this season. Let him watch as I am called for the first overall selection."
As we were walking away from Josh we were interrupted by a man claiming to be a football player saying that he would go first overall, but we did not catch much other than he ran 87 yards for a touchdown.
You can see with less than 2 hours until the draft the situation here is getting very heated and the Norfolk Seawolves will have a tough decision on their hands. Will they go with Allen Josh or Emondov Emoji? Or is there a potential third suitor to the 1st overall pick in Ryan Leaf Jr. the quarterback who ran 87 yards for a touchdown? Find out tonight at 8pm EDT!
