Ready to be graded (1060 words)
Anyone of you that follow me know that I have been a critical of the Yeti these past few seasons. I was cautiously optimistic last season and will remain so until the Yeti prove to me that they can be a contender. That being said, I believe that the Yeti had a great draft this season but will not be a true contender. I say this with no disrespect at all but a good amount of their players have been drafted in the past 2 seasons meaning that these players need time to grow into their positions and to reach their potential. I'm predicting that they double their wins this year for a record of around 4 - 10. Well without further ado, here's what I thought of the Yeti's draft this year.
Round 1 Pick 3: Laszlo Forty-Two WR (Tijuana Luchadores)
This pick addressed an obvious need for offensive skill players. The Yeti wide receiving corps is not very strong so adding another wide receiver with high upside is a great move. Forty-Two is listed as a red zone threat but he has proven to be able to do it all helping the Luchadores to a 9 - 5 record which was good enough for the best record in the DSFL last year. He had 43 receptions for 371 yards (8.63 yards per reception) and 4 touchdowns. Although his numbers were 3rd best on the team (aside from touchdowns where he was number 1) he excelled in the red zone and will help the Yeti offense tremendously in the future. Despite the Yeti's need at wide receiver Forty-Two is being sent back down to the Luchadores to further develop his skills before his big stage debut. When Forty-Two eventually joins the Yeti he will be a tremendous asset to the offense.
Trade Alert!: Right before the Yeti picked at 10th overall they announced a trade with the Arizona Outlaws. This trade gave the Yeti the 15th overall pick and Arizona's season 17 2nd round pick in exchange for Colorado's season 17 2nd round pick. This trade is huge for the Yeti as they received the second round pick that they needed (this will be expanded upon when discussing their pick at 10th overall) and a future 2nd rounder just for their future 2nd rounder which is great value. Kudos to the GMs for being able to pull this trade off.
Round 1 Pick 10: Joshua Palmer TE (Kansas City Coyotes)
Prior to the trade that just happened this pick would have been newly converted QB Wolfie McDummy from Portland. In the NSFL, if a GM is a player coming into the league the team is obligated to pick them with their second round pick. If the team does not have a second round pick they would have to use their lowest 1st round pick. Since the Yeti had no second round pick prior to the trade with Arizona this pick would have been used to pick McDummy. Instead of McDummy, Colorado was able to pick an active player at a position of need while still being able to draft McDummy in the second round. Now, onto Palmer himself. Palmer was the second receiving option on the Coyotes racking up 366 yards on 50 receptions and a touchdown. His TPE is relatively low but it will only go up from here. In a relatively small draft class it is rare to find an active player who also fits a need at the end of the first round. Palmer is a great value pick who will start right away with Balthazar Crindy looking to line up at wide receiver, and has a ton of room for growth provided he stays on top of his training.
Trade alert!: Colorado trades New Orleans for pick 14 and a season 18 4th round pick in exchange for TE Emilia Rudd and their season 18 4th round pick. This is a great trade for Colorado as they just drafted Rudd's replacement Joshua Palmer with the 10th overall pick. Colorado's GMs continue to make good moves.
Round 2 pick 4 (14th overall) via New Orleans: Wolfie McDummy QB (Portland Pythons)
Colorado gets their new quarterback after their previous quarterback retired this past season. McDummy is a converted wide receiver so there is not much tape of him playing quarterback besides high school tape. Despite this lack of high level experience, McDummy is an absolute athlete playing a multitude of positions in high school including quarterback. In college he played running back and safety before transitioning to wide receiver. Since McDummy is a gm, he will most likely stay active and be a near max if not a completely max earner.
The rest of the Yeti's picks are inactive so I will not go into great detail about them
Round 2 pick 5 (15th overall) via Arizona Outlaws: Antonio Sandoval Jr. (Portland Pytons)
A good depth pick as you can never have too many defensive linemen. Despite this, Sandoval most likely won't contribute much to the team unless he miraculously becomes active again.
Round 3 pick 3 (33rd overall): Judas Iscariot TE (Tijuana Luchadores)
Another tight end for depth. Tight ends are pretty valuable due to their versatility. They can line up and block as a tight end or possibly a fullback or line up outside as a split end. Once again, Iscariot most likely will not contribute much but there is always the small chance that he becomes active again but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Round 3 pick 4 (34th overall): Maxim Booth S (Portland Pythons)
I'm going to sound like a broken record but this is another low expectation pick, players that go inactive don't often come back and this is most likely one of those cases.
Round 4 pick 3 (43rd overall): Blaster Blade Jr. LB (Kansas City Coyotes)
Despite the great name I can't say this is an exciting pick, inactive players that fall this low aren't coming back. I do admire the GMs continuing to pick players instead of passing like two of the teams this draft (*cough* *cough* Austin and Chicago *cough* *cough*).
Overall I thought this was a great draft for Colorado. They were able to make some great trades and focused on drafting talented offensive players which they desperately need. I don't think they will see immediate returns this upcoming season but look for them to be legitimate contenders in the near future.
