Its that time of the week again - welcome back to another exciting edition of Taco Tuesday! I have what might be the most interesting Taco yet for you today, and it is not because it was a terrible draft. Who will it be?
Feel free to skip this paragraph if you are familiar with these articles. For you new readers out there, here is a quick summary of what Taco Tuesday is: I will be taking a look at the lowest scoring fantasy player, AKA the Taco (named after a character on "The League"), and analyzing their draft to see what might have contributed to their poor fantasy performance.
Before we begin, lets go back to our previous Tacos from earlier this season in our recurring "Where are they now?" segment to see if they are doing any better than before.
Where are they now? - @TubbyTim69 (Episode 2) & @Raven (Episode 1)
TubbyTim may not have been deserving of "Taco" status last week after finding that his TE's score wasn't being tracked past week 3. That score has been corrected as of now, and as expected Tim is in much better shape than before. However, he is still in last place in his group unfortunately, but at least he is no longer in the bottom few players of the league.
As for our friend Raven? Still awful, also as expected. We will be moving on to the next lowest scorer as a result. Raven basically gave up on his season before it began with his ludicrous 'sleeper picks' and is scraping the bottom of the barrel for a few points a week. With as well as the NFL Raven's are doing this year, it is a slap in the face to have such a loser with the same name. I'm beginning a petition for Raven to change his name to "Dolphin".
Looking forward, we have an interesting case on our hands. The next Taco is not doing so hot, but at the same time doesn't have the worst looking players on their roster. What gives? Let's find out - introducing this weeks Taco!
@DavidCorperial
I'm sorry David, I hate to inform you that you are the Taco for this week. When I first looked at David's roster, I thought, "How is this team doing so poorly?", but then I saw the two unlikely positions that were hindering his team. Here is what he has as of today:
Christ, J...........206.16
Jones, V...........88.2
Bishop, J..........99.9
Parker, J...........78.9
Blaze, J............101.2
Swift, N............115.6
Harris Jr., S.......0
Liberty.............50.7

Moving down the lines of this, I see Christ and think, "Wow, best fantasy QB, great start", then I see an underperforming running back and think, "Dang, bad luck," and when I get to the receiving options I'm underwhelmed, but impressed with the TE selection. These core pieces should be enough to carry David's team to at least an average scoring position. But then there's that glaring, fat zero by Harris Jr., and a very low score by the Defense. In all my life playing fantasy football, I've never seen a team get dragged down by their kicker and defense! That seems to be the case here as we take a closer look at each pick individually:
Round 1, Pick 5 - Joliet Christ, QB
I said it in the previous episode of Taco Tuesday - I despise picking a QB first in the draft. I truly believe that you can get better value at positions that have much more variation between the tiers of players. However, this might be an exception to that rule. Christ was the top fantasy scoring out of all positions last season, miles ahead of the other QB's, and he was primed to repeat that again this year. He was the top QB taken on average with an ADP of 13, so it wasn't a huge reach. Still, I believe a high level RB or WR would have been a better choice as Christ likely would have been available with David's next pick, but it seems to have worked out for him this time around.
Round 2, pick 8 - Vander Jones, RB
Luckily for David, a highly drafted RB did fall to him at pick 8, crisis averted! Or so we thought. Jones was 3rd in ADP so this seems like a steal, but the performance of Jones says otherwise. This is just pure bad luck, as I really like this pick. Not much else to say but that the fantasy god's were not on David's side for this one.
Round 3, pick 17 - Tyler Swift, RB (?)
Hold on a minute - before I go into this, it seems there was an error when entering this into the spreadsheet. Tyler Swift was definitely the selection here, and he is only receiving the points for Nate Swift. What gives? This results in David missing out on 20 points! It wouldn't prevent him from being this weeks Taco, but it is still an error that really hurts his team. What a shame. As for the pick itself, I'm not sold on it but if it were correct on the spreadsheet it would have worked out. T. Swift was 25 in ADP, but was the most contentious player as he went undrafted in half of the league but top 10 and even as high as 2nd overall in other groups. This was a nice way to round out the flex position - I think this was a good pick.
Round 4, pick 20 - Johnny Blaze, TE
This right here is the best pick David had in the entire draft. Blaze is one of two top of the line TE's, and having that is a key to winning. Blaze was 12th in ADP, and the fact that he fell this far makes it an amazing value pick for David. Blaze has been doing a great job for his team and is the centerpiece of the receiving corps. Unfortunately, though, it seems that a lack of WR's to this point is going to hurt.
Round 5, pick 29 - James Bishop, WR
Again, David gets great value by picking Bishop here. Although the Yeti aren't an offensive power house, there were some great expectations for Bishop coming into the season. With an ADP of 20, Bishop was tracking as a solid WR2 for the year. He hasn't been anything spectacular, but he has been a consistently good scorer for fantasy purposes. I'm loving this pick.
Round 6, pick 32 - Josh Parker, WR
David rounds out his WR group with a solid receiver in Josh Parker. David gets a solid piece later than he should have yet again as Parker was 26 in ADP. Neither of his receivers are stars, and neither are his running backs, but with his QB and TE, so far this is looking like a middle-of-the-pack team at the very least. It is honestly baffling that his score is so low.
Round 7, pick 41 - Philadelphia Liberty D
At the time, this wasn't a bad pick. The Liberty D was the 5th defense selected throughout the league and was 41 in ADP. Their performance this season, how ever, is nothing to write home about. As it turns out, the Liberty have the worst defense in the league. That is hurting this team badly, and I never thought I'd see the day that a defense would be harmful to a team. But the worst is yet to come...
Round 8, pick 42 - Stephen Harris Jr., K
Here we are - the one and only bad pick of the draft. It seems that David didn't get the memo that Harris Jr. was no longer the Yeti's kicker, and that big fat zero on the scoreboard is a crippling blow to an otherwise decent-at-worst team. Harris was selected in only one other group and had an ADP of 72. This is an awful, awful pick for a position that should be as easy as throwing a dart at a list of the kickers and picking the one it sticks to. Maybe thats what he did as Harris was still on the list of draftable players this year. If David had been following his team's score, he could have picked up any other kicker off of waivers and ended up fine. This is the black spot on an otherwise commendable fantasy draft.
In conclusion, a spat of bad luck, terrible performances, and most importantly the selection of an inactive kicker were the downfall of David's team. My advice for next season: wait to pick a QB until later so you can bolster you RB's and WR's early, keep your strategy of picking a great TE when they fall to you, and utilize waivers to improve the positions that you missed on. Best of luck to you in the final game of the season, and hey - at least you aren't as bad as Raven!
That'll do it for this weeks episode of Taco Tuesday - this is sadly the final one of the season as I will be taking a break from these heading into the offseason. To all of the Tacos - I meant no ill-will, so if anything came off as harsh, please let me know and I will adjust. No hard feelings! For the fans out there - thank you for reading. I appreciate you all and am excited to see what next season will offer!
