Since work got busy I couldn’t publish this until after the DSFL behind the scenes draft. As I am a CoGM of the Marshals I thought it would be best if I didn’t put out a mock draft since the draft is completed even if the main premise behind it was making fun of the recreates. Maybe I’ll do a post draft article, we’ll see.

Position Analysis
Quarterback
What I thought: There are two actives in Jay Cue, Johnson Harding and Phillip Helmet. As GM’s like to take a known entity at quarterback as the team is riding on their shoulders it is hard to see a team even if it is a need take a quarterback in the first round. In this case Cue will be the first one off the board by San Jose. The only other threat they have is maybe the outlaws grabbing Reese’s replacement. With this information Cue will probably drop to the third round where in all reality he should be fifth overall.
What the draft did: Jay Cue went to the outlaws at the end of the second round, Johnson Harding went at the end of the fourth and Phillip Helmet went in the middle of the sixth. I was off the mark as Cue came off a round earlier than I thought and to the Outlaws as I predicted they could do. The twist in the draft is instead of San Jose being a threat word on the street is that Liberty was trying to trade into the end of the second to take Jay Cue. This might be the steal of the draft if SLM was willing to put the franchise on Cue when he has recreated as a QB himself. Hopefully Cue negotiates a contract similar to Franklin Armstrong as they are in similar situations where they have to wait a few seasons before the entrenched starter is going to retire. The Outlaws don’t quite have the cap space the Otters had but for reference Franklin got sixteen million his first year, and then four million for the next two.
Running Back
What I thought: Everyone likes to create as running back and they are pretty effective with low TPE so unless you have a sim vet, media juggernaut or league presence you are not going to take one high. I believe Bex or Ruff Ruff will go at the end of the first round. After that Dotson, Hanyadi, Utler, McTaco will be sprinkled between rounds three and six based on their activity in the locker rooms.
What the draft did: Bex went high to the SaberCats as I projected however, I was only partly right after that. Ruff Ruff and Hanyadi both went in the second (Forever will they be a compared to eachother!), with Dotson taken at the top of round three and then a whole slog of running backs taken at the end of the fourth to the start of the fifth round. This complements my thinking on unless you are a stand out even if you’ve earned more TPE and are a good locker room presence the running back position will take a back seat to other positions. This includes the best kicker and two offensive lineman selected before the large grouping of backs.
Wide Receivers
What I thought: One might go in the first round
. The position is not a pressing need for a lot of teams except for San Jose and a few teams with regression coming in a few years. With the scarcity at other positions while having three top choices in Biggums, Bender and Dropson I can see all three gone by the third round. Once one of them is gone then it should start a catalyst to drop the others.
What the draft did: I was pretty spot on for this position. Most likely because I had to research the teams for my own benefit and got to talk to most of the general managers about their wide receiver core. Biggums came off the board early and at the top of the second Bender was taken and Jake Dropson right after. As I predicted the top options went early and close together while the fourth receiver taken wasn’t until the end of the fifth round. Fellow teammate Asher Quinn to his old GM of the Marshals. Maybe he knows something the rest of the league doesn’t!
Tight Ends
What I thought: Tight ends aren’t needed in the sim but when you have a good one it helps. With only two active tight ends and with Steco clearly leading the race a team will surely jump at the chance to draft a great locker room presence in the top three rounds. Earl Sauce will probably have to wait a few rounds later as the need is just not there for the position.
What the draft did: End of the second Ocewilder was taken and Earl Sauce at the end of the third. I was off the mark with Earl Sauce going higher than I anticipated. The next TE Walker wasn’t taken until the fifth and sixth rounds respectively. Ocewilder has switched to defensive end for the Yeti and that leaves Earl Sauce as the lead tight end to show the league that the position is viable and has benefit.
Offensive Line
What I thought: The rules aren’t quite set up for offensive line to flourish and with Offensive Line Bots being viable a team is not going to use a high pick on one with history showing that users just don’t stick with it. I personally think they deserve a fair rub but rubs don’t get you drafted in the first four rounds.
What the draft did: My love for the offensive line I guess is not strong enough! Bakhtiari went in the end of the third and Rubbe and Blockerman were selected in the middle of the fourth. It is a step in the right direction in such a large class. These big guys were taken right after an impact defensive end in Franchet and before solid contributors in tight end Earl Sauce, CB Juan Marston, and the running back hoard of the four five turn. If these three players stay active and give their team a competitive advantage the league will have to take notice!
Defensive Tackle
What I thought: The class started out strong at defensive tackle at the beginning of the season but life outside of football took victim to some great prospects. There is a clear leader and then everyone else. An inactive is second in TPE for this position. Defensive tackle is always in need for teams so after Bjorn I see Bradberton going in the third with Trae Bacon going in the fourth on the hopes he comes back.
What the draft did: Bjorn! Bjorn! Bjorn! Nola is going to erect a statue or make him mayor after his career is finished with the second line. I hit the nail on the head with Bradberton going in the fourth and was off a round with teams not willing to take a shot on an inactive Bacon until the fifth round. Hopefully in S20/21/22 we see an influx of talent as a lot of the current league leaders are heading into regression with not many young players to fill in.
Defensive End
What I thought: Another shallow group like receivers the ends have only three top prospects with the fourth having 57 TPE. The newly switched Hall will go early and Fabrico and Franchet should not be too far behind in the draft. As ends are a big need for teams even though F & F have lower TPE they are active in chat and a solid locker room presence. I predict both gone by end of the second beginning of the third.
What the draft did: I’ll call this prediction a win. Hall went second overall while Franchet and Badari went middle of the third. For the lack of defensive line talent in the league, this is an absolute win for the Hawks and Liberty. The former defensive line player of the year Franchet will be sure to tear up the NSFL when he makes the jump.
Linebackers
What I thought: With four solid linebackers to choose from and it being a position that users like to create because of the stats they vacuum up I see them dropping farther than you would expect based on the league activity they provide. Three are first round talents but need and depth at the position I can see only one being selected. With the others to fill out the second round.
What the draft did: General managers had the same fondness towards the players as I did but my analysis of need or depth of the position was way off. Kassel, Virtanen and Gaines all went in the first round. Smart was in the second and Lopez went in the third. I believe I missed the mark on teams valuing the league activity they bring and the drop off of talent after the third player. Smart in the second round is going to try and buck this analysis by already putting in the work at Otters training camp!
Corners
What I thought: With only three top TPE players in Adams, Purchase and Abernathy and a few middle of the road earners in Rector, Little, Marston and Beck I can see teams grabbing the top three and then playing chicken for the rest while trying to grab value at other positions.
What the draft did: I hit the nail on the head. Purchase went fourth, Abernathy ninth and Adams went early second with Rector early third and Marston at the end of the third. They cornerbacks fell as I thought with a round gap between the top three and the middle1
Safety
What I thought: I should of grouped these in with the corners as they are pretty interchangeable in the defence. I thought Pete Parker would go top five as a sim vet and high TPE and the handful of active players with middle of the road TPE will go in the third and fourth round.
What the draft did: This is a bigger miss. Parker went eight overall to the Yeti with Hockhertz, and Wozniak in the second and Ryan in the third. My lack of discord activity missed the presence the second rounders would bring to their new teams.
Kickers
The proclaimed 1OA or 69OA Baxter Frost went 32nd to the Liberty. This is a pretty good spot as he beat out semi active running backs and receivers at the this point in the draft. I think this is an absolute steal at this spot…. Baxter needs custom tailored pants just to fit his one leg.
