The Fast and The Dreamiest
At the NSFL combine there were a lot of fast players but two of them stood out: Kacey Dream and Quindarius Tyerucker. They ran the exact same 40 time with a blistering four point three. Many analysts and pundits speculated about which was actually faster, and there was even some friendly competitive banter between the two. But it never went any further than that, nobody was sure who would win in a foot race. Until now.
Kacey Dream boarded a plane to go all the way across the country, from Portland, Oregon to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, just to find out for good and put the argument to rest. There was no animosity, no trash talk between the two. This was done purely out of the spirit of competition. As Kacey stepped off the plane into the Carolina heat he saw Tyerucker there waiting for him. As Kacey walked up and shook Quindarius' hand he grinned and asked, "You ready for this?" "You know it, I already got a spot picked out, we can head there right now," Quin replied with a sly smirk. Kacey laughed, "Hey now, don't do me dirty like that, I just got off a plane! Let's do it tomorrow, besides, I'm starving, I've been living off of airplane food all day. Let's get some grub." This whole arrangement had actually started with a tweet. Let's settle this once and for all, my turf or yours, loser donates 100k to the winner's charity of choice. After Kacey tweeted this at Quindarius they made the dream happen. Sponsors and media were all over it, Quin had picked a local track and there was going to be a huge showing for a race that will last less than a minute. They had decided to do a good old fashioned 100 yard dash.
The media was split on who was going to come away with the win and massive betting had commenced as soon as the event was announced. People showed up hours in advance to get the best seats possible. There were vendors and food trucks everywhere; there was even an official shirt for the event that was pretty slick. Neither Kacey nor Quin knew who had set that up, probably one of the representatives from the DSFL looking to cash in(Kacey's money was on Bjorn Ironside; trust that greedy mother trucker to make money off of a charity event). They had gotten there about an hour beforehand as well to warm up and they were stretching out on the track together. Standing next to each other Kacey couldn't help but notice that they were almost exactly the same build, same height and everything. 'This is going to be a real mirror match', he thought to himself and grinned.
They finished stretching and jogged a few laps around the track together. They passed the representatives for their respective charities of choice. Kacey had gone with PCAA, Prevent Child Abuse America, since he had grown up in the city notorious for abusing and neglecting cornerbacks; Kansas City. Curiosuly enough Quindarius had chosen Pokemon With You. Apparently he got a rare version of Pikachu or something for the endorsement.
They finally finished their warmups and walked up near the starting line. An announcer cam over the PA system to introduce both of them and explained the charities that they were supporting. A referee stood at both ends of the field, on at the starting line with the starting pistol and one at the finish line. There was a high fps camera at the finish line as well just in case. There were also a few people there to clock how their speed.
As they were about to start Kacey got into a sprinter's pose and puts his hands in the dirt. He saw Quindarius do the same out of the corner of his eye. The ref counted down and it felt like slow motion as the pistol went off. They both broke off of the line at the same time and it felt like they were the only ones moving, the rest of the world stood still. They moved stride for stride and it was hard to tell who was winning. Every time it felt like Dream was pulling a little ahead Tyerucker would immediately close the distance and even take the lead. The finish line approached in a matter of seconds and they both stretched themselves forward with all they had, willing themselves to victory. They were greeted at the line with a series of photography flashes and an enormous roar from the crowd.
Neither was sure who had won, they collapsed on the ground next to each other and shook hands with the last of their energy. Kacey collapsed on his back, totally tapped out. The referee appeared in his field of vision above him. "So who won?" The referee looked aside bashfully and muttered, "Um, we're trying to figure that out now. The photos of the finish are on the big screen, you can watch as the judges upstairs decide." Kacey glanced over and saw them replaying the same clip over and over. It showed Kacey's chest hitting the tape at the exact same time as Quindarius' foot landed on the line. It seemed in any frame, from every angle, like an exact tie.
As the referees and judges deliberated the outcome there was a low rumble of excitement from the onlookers. An NSFL scout who was present commented to the person next to him, "Those are some fast boys, definitely the fastest in their class." "Yeah dey may be a lil fasta bu' they ain't got hands like Suuuuuhhwweeeeeeet."
After about 10 minutes the PA system came to life again and the judges finally announced they had come to a decision…. It was in fact a tie. They decided that since neither competitor had lost the league would donate 50k to the other's charity of choice. It was also revealed that they had both ran a blistering time of 10.2 seconds. Kacey and Quin grinned at each other and Kacey asked, "Rematch next year? I bet we can break 10 seconds."
