It’s the day before the season 19 draft and my anticipation to see who will be joining the ranks of the Second Line is immense. With that in mind I figured I would take the information I learned from my Draft Primer and put together a mock draft. I think I’ll probably do the first two rounds of the draft. That will be 20 picks and with only 21 active players in this draft that will basically cover the entire draft.
Round 1 Pick 1 -
Austin McCormick - TE
This is an extremely hard pick to figure out for multiple reasons. With both the first and third picks in the draft the Second Line might strategize to take one of their top 2 players on the board with hopes of getting the other one at the third pick. This is a tricky situation as a big part of it is having knowledge of what the team picking second, in this case it’s the SaberCats, will do with their pick. I think I can logic my way into knowing who the top 2 players are on the Second Line’s big board. I have no insider knowledge here, I simply used logic and reason. So I can immediately eliminate quarterbacks, running backs, secondary, and kickers from the possibly top pick for the Second Line. Quarterback because we have our leader Stan Francisco and that isn’t changing anytime soon. Running back because we have 2 award winning running backs with Forrest Gump and Toriki. Secondary because that’s our strongest position group on the defense with lots of young talent. Kickers because who would take a kicker in the first round ever? Also, why would anyone create a kicker? Seems like a lame position to make with little effort needed. So anyway, that leaves wide receivers, tight ends, and defensive front seven. I think wide receivers can safely be eliminated from top 2 because there are quite a few good ones in this draft, so at least one should be available with the Second Line’s third first round pick. That leaves the top Tight End option, and really the only tight end in this draft, Austin McCormick and the top front seven player which is without a doubt Mack Arianlacher. The reason I have NOLA taking McCormick here instead of Arianlacher is because I think the likelihood that McCormick gets past SaberCats at 2 is lower than Arianlacher.
Round 1 Pick 2 -
Kacey Dream - CB
I think the SaberCats general managers are definitely tempted to take Deondre Thomas-Fox here, but I think they know they can probably get him at the top of the 2nd round as well, so won’t waste that pick here. They could go any number of directions here, but I think taking the top defensive player in the draft in Kacey Dream makes a lot of sense. He is leading all defensive players in this draft with 226 total TPE last I checked (it’s probably more now).
Round 1 Pick 3 -
Mack Arianlacher - Front 7
Arianlacher recently announced he will be moving to play on the defensive line. This would serve a big need for the Second Line who really could use a defensive end. Arianlacher could easily go #1 overall and I wouldn’t be shocked. I also wouldn’t be shocked if the SaberCats drafted him at #2 in which case that would screw up my whole dream scenario for the Second Line to get their top 2 picks.
Round 1 Pick 4 -
Sean O’Leary - WR
The Butchers definitely have a need a wide receiver, and it looks like they will have their pick of the group. O’Leary to me is the top receiver in the draft and Chicago will be very happy getting him at this spot. Chicago could also use help in the front seven, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with Vassallo here either.
Round 1 Pick 5 -
Quindarius Tyerucker - RB
The rich get richer. It’s very hard to mock a player to a team that is loaded with talent. I chose Tyerucker because I think they want another running back to run alongside Reed, and they drafted one in season 18, but he hasn’t updated in over a month, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them try again to get a running back to go alongside Reed. I’ve heard that running back by committee is a lot more successful in the sim then a workhorse back, so this pick would make perfect sense to me for the Otters to try and continue their dominance.
Round 1 Pick 6 -
Stevie Vassallo - DE
I originally had the Butchers taking Blaylock here, but after I did some more research I found that the Butchers don’t have a need for another safety. They also are getting Hardagain in the second round, so taking a safety that they can convert to linebacker doesn’t really make sense. I don’t think they’d take a second offensive player in the first here, so that leaves the best defensive line player, which is Vassallo.
Round 1 Pick 7 -
Sweet James-Jones - WR
How do you pick for a team that’s loaded everywhere? You look at their regression and notice that two of their wide receivers are regressing and they will need to replace one or both of them soon. Sweet James-Jones is the second highest TPE wide receiver in this draft and should fit in perfectly in Yellowknife.
Round 1 Pick 8 -
Rayne Gordon - WR
Similar to the Wraiths, the Second Line has some older players at receiver and could definitely use another young receiver that has the potential to become a future star in the league and Rayne Gordon definitely fits that description. Gordon is the last available active receiver in this draft, which makes him extremely valuable at this point.
Round 1 Pick 9 -
Jayson Kearse - DE
With the available defensive players in the draft dwindling it makes sense for the Wraiths to take the best front seven player available. The other option I could see here would be a running back, but I don’t think it’s as big a need as front seven for the Wraiths.
Round 1 Pick 10 -
Mayson Blaylock - S
I could see the Otters picking up Blaylock here and then either just using him at linebacker or having him position change to linebacker. He’s got the highest total TPE of remaining defensive players, and so seems like the obvious choice for the Otters.
Round 2 Pick 1 -
Avon Blocksdale Jr - QB
This pick is a guarantee due to slm being the general manager of the Liberty.
Round 2 Pick 2 -
Deondre Thomas-Fox - QB
I’m honestly extremely tempted to put this pick in the first round, but I think the SaberCats are smart enough to know they can wait until the second and still get their guy. Will DTF be ok with falling to the second round, or will he be upset that he was passed up in the first by the SaberCats for a corner?
Round 2 Pick 3 -
Tormund Bjornsson - DT
The last front seven player available in the draft, and the Second Line need front seven. It only makes sense for the Second Line to draft Bjornsson and line him up right next to Bjorn on the defensive line.
Round 2 Pick 4 -
Jed Podolak - RB
With very few options left at this point the Wraiths get the last active offensive player that’s not a quarterback. The list of available players at this point is extremely small. By my count at this point there will only be seven active players left in the draft, and one of them will be going at pick 19 to the Butchers.
Round 2 Pick 5 -
Gary Lazer-Eyes - S
The Yeti finally get their first pick and my assumption is they will take best available and by my list the best available is Lazer-Eyes at safety.
Round 2 Pick 6 -
Beat - S
Similar to the Yeti the Copperheads have their first pick in the draft right here and I think they’d take the last available active defensive player. From here on out the only players left are quarterbacks and kickers.
Round 2 Pick 7 -
Brock Phoenix - QB
The Hawks don’t have much option at this point, but at least they don’t have to take a kicker in the second round. Phoenix will spend quite some time in the DSFL, but could be potential trade bait in the future.
Round 2 Pick 8 -
Zack Vega - QB
The Outlaws grab Vega here and if Vega stays active he could potentially become their next quarterback after Andrew Reese retires. This is actually probably the perfect time for the Outlaws to draft a quarterback. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try and move up to take the quarterback they want instead of settling for the one that falls into their lap.
Round 2 Pick 9 -
Willie Hardagain - LB
As general manager Toasty is kind of getting a steal here by being able to draft himself at 19th in this small draft.
Round 2 Pick 10 -
Jordan Jackson - K
There are no active players left in this draft that aren’t kickers, so Jackson will go here and Prohaska will go at the top of the 3rd.
This concludes my season 19 NSFL mock draft. I plan on using it to not only see how accurate I was, but to grade teams on whether I think they made the right pick or not. Look for a draft recap article early next week where I praise some teams that drafted intelligently and scorn others for making the wrong decision. I look forward to getting on the bad side of all those general managers I scorn.
