Tijuana Defense:
- Tijuana’s defense was absolutely incredible in S19 by holding their opponents to 165 Points Against. For reference, the next closest was the eventual Ultimini champions, Minnesota at 226 points.
-They were also 2nd in TFL and sacks showing that they could get into their opponents’ backfield consistently and effectively
- Last but not least, their defensive backs were also somewhat effective as they had the 2nd most Passes Deflected and ranked 3rd in interceptions as a team
DT:
Potential Losses: Otis Allen (Draft)
Retains: George Bjornsson, Rowan Jacob
The 6 year DSFL vet Jacob Rowan had a fantastic season starting in the trenches for Tijuana. The 166 TPE DSFL beast had finished the season with 71 tackles (1st among DT) and 7 sacks (2nd in the league, 1st among DT). He proved to be a force in the trenches and had a fantastic breakout season following 3 seasons in which he never eclipsed 40 tackles.

Outside of him lies George Bjornsson, an IA 50 TPE DT. All throughout these articles we’ve seen that low TPE, inactive players are (usually) next to useless due to the fact that they fall off towards the end of the season (When they are 50 TPEs). Due to that it would be beneficial for Tijuana to take another solid DT here to help Roward.
Positional Need: B+
DE:
Potential Losses: Kyle Idylewyld (Call Up), Daniel Winkler (Draft)
Retains: Lo Mein, Barnabas Cole
Both Lo Mein and Cole Barnabas are inactives and as a result, it would not be surprising for me to see Bagel and Coffee working hard to replace them immediately. Lo Mein particularly did not have a season worth noting or analyzing in depth, but Cole did have his fair share of the spotlight for the majority of the season, often disrupting opposing offenses up the gut.
Barnabas had a fairly average to above average season in which he managed to put together 33 Tackles, 14 tackles for a loss and 4 sacks as a Defensive End. Not exactly stuffing the stats but for a team already decimated by injuries and call ups
Lo Mein on the other hand hasn’t even played a game in 3 seasons, or even gotten a tackle in 4. I’ll let you guys be the judge of what that means
Positional Need: A
LB:
Potential Losses: Brian Mills XI (Retiring?)
Retains: Junior Lopez, Inspectah Deck, Jason Carver, Michael Beckham
With Brian Mills XI retiring last season Junior Lopez and Inspectah Deck will be looking to make major strides this upcoming season. His production will be missed sorely as he played well despite inconsistent playing time.
Although Junior Lopez may have taken a step back in 2033 compared to his 152 tackle, 2 int, 4 PD season, he still put up extremely respectful numbers with 120 tackles (3rd in DSFL), 3 Sacks, 1 INT and a safety. One thing that was interesting was the lack of ability to get into his opponents’ backfield with 1 TFL in his career. He also showed that he could step up in key moments with a masterful 8 tackle, 2 sack game against Minnesota in the Ultimini finals.

Alongside him will be stud rookie Inspectah Deck. Deck had a slow start to his season in terms of TPE updates with back to back duds as he remained at 50 but he would spike towards the end of the season and as a result we got to take a little peek at what the future may hold for Deck as he showed flashes of brilliance.

Outside of those 2 are inactives Jason Carver and Michael Beckham, nothing special. Both put up 0s across the board last season and accomplished nothing.
LB is the most versatile position defensively and with Tijuana having multiple holes, it might just be worth it to take a couple of those.
Positional Need: B+
CB:
Potential Losses: Caleb Beck (Called up)
Retains: Victor Moreno, Justin Kehoe
Right off the bat, losing Caleb Beck will be a huge blow to this secondary as he was such an integral part of it last season. The third year CB would finish his season with an impressive line of 66 tackles, 4 picks and 12 passes deflected over the course of 14 games.
On the other hand enter his fellow corner, Victor Moreno. Moreno had an impressive 13 pass deflections over the course of the season, good for 2nd in the entire league and 3 interceptions, good for 4th in the league. There’s no doubt that Moreno has quality hands and entering this season he is someone that Tijuana can depend on when it comes to shutting down opposing receivers.

Currently slotted to start in that CB2 spot is 3 year DSFL vet Justin Kehoe. I’m going to be honest here, Tijuana is better off replacing him with a bagel, no not Earl Sauce Bagel, I mean a literal fuckin’ bagel. In 39 career games, Kehoe has amassed a whopping 9 tackles, 1 interception and 6 passes deflected. I mean, I’m sure in 39 games an actual bagel would be able to catch at least one pass with its hole and trip 10 people somehow.
Outside of Moreno, Tijuana only has 1 CB and he’s not someone you’d really want to see the field on a regular basis. Once again, Tijuana might want to take a look at someone here for depth purposes to fill out that CB2 spot.
Positional Need: A-/B+ (Couldn’t decide)
Safety:
Potential Losses: Mason Blaylock (Call up), Wozzy Wayne (Retired)
Retains: Momodou Jallow, Howard Ryan
Another position and another key part of Tijuana’s championship-level defense will be leaving this offseason. This time it will be Mason Blaylock who most of you may know as Jay_Doctor or the Safety gang’s father. He was a tremendous player in the Luchadore secondary last season and his play will definitely be missed moving forward.
Going forward, Tijuana will only have 2 safeties to work with in Howard Ryan and Momodou Jallow. Howard Ryan was an extremely productive player and made a great pairing with Blaylock. He would finish 2nd among safeties in tackles with 86, LEAD the league with sacks as a safety with 9 and have 4 TFL. Simply put he was a beast, and moving forward he would be the perfect player to carry Blaylock’s torch in the Tijuana secondary.

Momodou Jallow is currently the safety who will be starting alongside him and he is an 83 TPE IA. Tijuana already didn’t have the best secondary in the DSFL, losing Blaylock will hurt more and they should consider looking for another player to fill up the hole that will be left by him in a position that’s considered extremely versatile.
