Defensive End
Disclaimer
1.) I'm not a football guy. I never played, I don't watch it often (Brett Coleman is lit tho), I probably never will. My opinions are probably gonna be a little shit. Because of that if you bitch at me for being stupid in here I'm not going to care.
2.) This isn't actually a new engine, it's just my idea for what I would want.
Defensive End[/div]
There's a distinct difference between the two positions on the defensive line that might be lost on some people. Now being a non football guy some of you are going to call me a moron but I know that on the surface level the defensive end is going to be faster than the defensive tackle because their primary jobs are to both stop runs to the outside meaning they need to be able to cover more area laterally than the tackle will have to, and to try to get sacks meaning they need to be able to get around the offensive tackles quickly in order to put more pressure on the quarter back. But it's not that simple. There are different ways of getting through and around the offensive tackles, sometimes when the end recognizes what's happening on a play they can jump up to deflect a pass that's going over them (although this would be extremely rare and means the quarter back made a huge mistake in their pass), sometimes there'll be less players on the line it's about being more sneaky than strong. Are you a run stopper or a pass rusher? Let's take a look at the stats that'll decide that for you as a defensive end.
Strength - The player's raw strength
Endurance - The player's ability to continue to be effective during long drives
Quickness - The player's ability to change their style of attack quickly
Scheme Recognition - The player's ability to correctly identify they play that the offense is going to run and to decide how to attack the player that will receive the ball off the snap or immediately after the snap
Acceleration - The player's ability to quickly reach their top speed
Speed - The player's top speed
Catching - The player's ability to catch (or deflect) a contested ball
Defensive Moves - The player's ability to get around the player blocking them with some sort of fake out or trickery
Tackling - The player's ability to bring a player with the ball down or move a player blocking them out of their way
Technique - The player's footwork and ability to put themselves in the best position to get through or around the opposing blocker, generally their ability to form the correct plan for the start of a play in this context
1.) The most important thing on defense is being able to get to the player you're trying to cover or tackle. Considering the small amount of space that a defensive end will have to move to get to the quarter back or running back, in my opinion Acceleration is going to be far more important than Speed. If you can get past the offensive tackle without them having a chance to block you in the first place your job on that play becomes a lot easier. If you have really high tackling and defensive moves you might get through or around your block but you could still be easily picked up by a secondary block if you can't separate yourself from the offensive line quick enough. Gotta be quick off the hop.
2.) Tackling, Scheme Recognition and Defensive Moves are going to be huge here. If you can tell what's happening in the upcoming play you can set up to effectively shut down the upcoming play. After being set up for success your Tackling and Defensive Moves will allow you to execute on that plan of attack. Tackling, Strength and Technique will allow you to plow through the tackle blocking you. If you notice the offensive lineman setting up to try to pancake you hard your player can step back or swipe to the side of them with their Defensive Moves to avoid contact with an off balance offensive lineman. There are a lot of ways to get around the offensive tackle, the issue is being set up for success by recognizing what they're going to do because inherently they're going to be better at blocking you than you are at getting around them just based on the number of attributes that effect each player in that situation. The goal is to maximize the opportunities they give you to get a sack. Of course someone like JJ Watt is good enough to make an opportunity for himself on every play, and that's the end game for a peak defensive end. Make it so the offensive tackle has to work on every single to play to make sure you don't get the sack. Not plays off, wear down the line.
3.) Most people will think it's odd for defensive end to worry about Catching, but in this context it's less actually catching the ball and more their ability to deflect a pass that the quarter back might think is a safe short pass to the tight end who just peeled off the line or ran a cross route through the center of the field. These opportunities won't come often but if the defensive end can just up and block the pass or even intercept it it's a hugely deflating play for the other team. Considering how very rarely they'll have the opportunity to utilize this attribute I'd say that this is something you shouldn't put much TPE into until you're at peak TPE and you want to dump something into.
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]Some Extra Notes[/div]
I'm really disappointed in the lack of effect that defensive ends have. Ben on the New Orleans Second Line used to be an offensive lineman but position switched for the good of the team (RIP Ben's offensive lineman, I loved you so). In real life these pass rushers are pivotal for a defense, they pressure the other team's quarter back into submission and force them to make really bad plays and sack them for big losses in yardage. Unfortunately our sim engine overlooks the importance of that.
