Kacey Dream sat on the bench in front of his locker with his forearms on his knees and a towel draped over his head. He was the only one left in the Orange County Otters locker room after their week 8 game against the Arizona Outlaws. Even though it was an away game they had totally dominated the Outlaws. The rest of the team was off celebrating but Kacey ad stayed behind to contemplate his role and his gameplay. It had been a harsh coming back to Earth this season after his monster final season with Myrtle Beach in the DSFL. After all of the awards records and statistics this season felt very underwhelming. Going from MVP as a defensive player to a role player on what is perennially best team in the league wa taking some adjusting. He loved it in Orange County, playing for the Otter was a great experience. But having nothing to show for his season but tackles and a lousy forced fumble was disappointing to say the least. He was determined to do better, to contribute more. Everyone else on the defense was making big plays, huge, momentum-swinging impacts. Kacey felt like he was just there most of the time. But that would not do, it wouldn't last. He WOULD step up and even if this season he didn't win any of the awards he had grown so used to collecting they would come. And so would the championships. Kacey finally ended his internal monologue, tossed the towel in the dirty clothes hamper and got dressed. As he was leaving the locker room he noticed someone leaning against the wall just outside. "Well if it isn't the Dream. You were in there for a long time, you doing alright?" Korrin Abernathy asked as Kacey went to walk by. Korrin was a great guy, an experienced player and team leader. He was basically everything that Kacey wanted to be. Kacey ran his hand through his hair and held it there as he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. He gazed off into the. Ether before he looked down at his feet. "Yeah I am alright, I'm just… still adjusting I guess. This season hasn't exactly been what I was hoping for, at least for myself. I'm just so used to seeing my name in lights, to the fame and the glory. It seems like I have lost all of that this season and I just don't know how I feel about it." Korrin sighed and patted Kacey on the back as he said, "Listen bro, playing cornerback is hard, especially in the NSFL. I know you were the man down in the DSFL but up here we are mostly the guys behind the scenes. We leave it to the linebackers and the safeties to get the stats and the glory. We are the glue that holds the team together though. If we don't hear our names over the PA system that just means we are doing our jobs." Kacey considered what Korrin had just said and nodded. "Yeah I know you're right, in a lot of ways I'm just spoiled. I guess I just need to get my head right about this season so I can step it up and help us bring home another Ultimus."
Korrin cocked his head and replied, "Well if you want to get your head right why don't you get back to your roots? Take a trip down to Myrtle Beach to see the Buccaneers play, tour the town, see the good ship. I hear they are fielding one hell of a defense this season and I'm pretty sure you've got something to do with that." Kacey paused for a second and then nodded in agreement. "You're right, taking a trip down to Myrtle Beach is the best thing I could do for myself right now. Thanks for the advice, that is a great idea.
Kacey booked a flight to Myrtle Beach right then and there and flew out that night. He bought tickets for the Myrtle Beach home game against Nofolk the next day while he was waiting on his flight. After he landed he dropped his bags off at the hotel and took an Uber down to the coast. He kicked off his shoes and walked around the beach. It felt good to feel the sand between his toes. There were plenty of nice beaches in Orange County but they aren't THIS beach. They aren't the best beach. For the first time since he left he felt like himself again. This beach is just good for the soul. He sat down in the sand and watched the sun set over the city before he took a cab back to his hotel room. The next day he got up early and went to his favorite seafood place. California was all about fusion food these days, you couldn't get classic seafood so easy out there. Kacey ordered a seafood boil, usually a meal you order with a group. He sat there alone at his table easiting shrimp and crab legs, potatoes and corn. He tre the head off a crawfish and sat their sucking the brains out in utter bliss. He felt reinvigorated, like he was ready for something special to happen. And he was ready so he headed to the stadium. He was hours early but he wanted to catch the team before they played. When he got there the security guards recognized him and let him into the player area. At first nobody noticed him walk into the locker room but the Jeffrey LaVert happened to look up and saw him. He let out a loud "Whooop" and jumped up to give Kcey a hug. Most of the secondary looked up to Kacey, he taught them how to do what it is that they do. The whole team gathered around and Kacey was surrounded by a happy burble of hooting and hollering. The vets were all reminiscing while the rookies were crowded along the edge of the group in awe. This was Kacey Dream in the flesh, the most famous and greatest player ever to come out of Myrtle Beach. The only defensive player in recent history to win Most Valuable Player. Kacery Dream, in the flesh. He chatted happily with Frost and Boucher, LaVert and Stephens, his brothers on the defense. He soaked in the admiration of all the new faces he didn't recognize. He raised his voice over the team as he bellowed, "I hear y'all are doing me proud. That this is one of the greatest defense ever to be fielded in the DSFL. And I would kill to be a part of this unit, to have gotten the chance to play with y'all. I came here to feel the thunder and see the heat you bring, the fear in that Nofolk offense today. Go out on that field and bring it for me today. Show them why Myrtle Beach is the best beach." At this the team bellowed back, howling and screaming into the air. With one final monumental push of his lungs Kacey screamed at the top of his lungs, "PILLAGE AND PLUNDER" and the rest of the team echoed him. With that they rushed out of the locker room and out onto the field, a ravenous horde ready to maul the unfortunate souls on the other side of the field. It was one of the most dominant games of the entire season as Myrtle Beach went on to win 44-6 and it became apparent that they were in a whole different league compared to Nofolk. Myrtle Beach best beach, best folk.
