Crown him! Prince Vegeta chosen #1
by: Mony Kronbon
With the No. 1 overall pick in the S21 NSFL draft, the Orange County Otters selected Prince Vegeta (formally knowns as Jeffrey LaVert). After weeks of speculation, the Otters made the presumptive first pick, selecting the highest TPE earner of the S21 class. Vegeta amassed 3 interceptions, 129 tackles, and 7 pass deflections for the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers, leading them to a 12-4 records and an SFC championship.
Being drafted number one has the benefit of financial security but also comes with a tremendous amount of pressure due to increased media attention and expectations. Vegeta will be one of the cornerstones the Otters will be relying on to return to Championship form.
Asked how he was handling the pressure of being the number one pick, Vegeta said,
“I don't really feel any pressure. I've come into a really comfortable spot in OCO (Orange County Otters) and I'm sure my GMs and teammates only want one thing from me, to be the same person that I was before I entered their team and that was a person that was super competitive and willing to do anything to help my team win. “
During the DSFL playoffs, the Myrtle Beach standout changed his name to Prince Vegeta. Vegeta feels his new name embodies his play on the field and vision for his NSFL career. Since the change, The number one overall pick has become an instant fan favorite. Vegeta has his sights set on winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in the NSFL. Beyond that Vegeta wants to have a Hall of Fame career and break the record for the highest TPE earned.
Vegeta was mentored by legendary defensive back, Kacey Dream and now follows in his footsteps in being picked number one overall. Kacey Dream has been one of Vegeta’s biggest supporters while acting as General Manager of the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers.
The selection also becomes a feather in the cap of Buccaneers fans. Myrtle Beach had two of the top five overall picks as Vegeta was joined by Hehateme Picksixwhen at pick four.
Vegeta is determined to be one of the greatest of all time and has all the tools to achieve it. The bar has been set for defensive back prospects and the pressure is on Vegeta to live up to the hype.
For all those S22 rookies out there (myself included) here are some words of wisdom from the number one pick.
“Max out speed, it always works”
