Agent Tesla here on behalf of the poor downtrodden workers of the league recommending that they receive an increase in pay at least in proportion to the recent increase in activity, or ideally long term an increase that would correlate with activity. I intend to do an analysis of both long term activity and the recent spike to help provide an explanation for why this increase is so important now.
Data Section
Season Length: 7 Weeks | Position Pay: 5 Million | Teams: Eighteen
(The first two numbers might be inaccurate in which case someone please correct me on them, as one was calculated from the gap between Ultimus 19 and 20. While the other is remembered from a conversation, however it could be that I was misinformed.)
NSFL GM Net Worth courtesy of Raven
DSFL GM Net Worth courtesy of Raven
(I do not have a hard comparison here as much of my purchases for my client have not gone through yet. That said according my personal tally of my check book I should end up with about 55 million by the first game of the season not counting whatever I will get paid for this article. You might say now that of course I am going to be mega rich since I am amazing Agent Tesla, and you would be right about that. However my fortune in this currency has only come over the last week and the fact that I would be the sixth richest NSFL GM, richest DSFL GM, sixth richest NSFL GM tandem, and second richest DSFL GM tandem is something that is worth looking at in my opinion. Also as a precursory response I will say that this does not suggest that media workers should be paid less, however I will cover that more below.)
Activity Check #145: 276 (The second most replies of any activity check & 28% higher than any before the storm)
Activity Check #144: 359 (The most replies of any activity check & 67% higher than any before the storm)
Activity Check #143: 181 (The eighth most replies of any activity check)
Activity Check #142: 190 (The fifth most replies of any activity check)
Activity Check #141: 178 (Tied for the ninth most replies of any activity check)
Activity Check #140: 194 (The fourth most replies of any activity check)
Activity Check #139: 214 (The third most replies of any activity check)
Activity Check #138: 189 (The sixth most replies of any activity check)
Activity Check #137: 178 (Tied for the ninth most replies of any activity check)
Activity Check #136: 155 (The only one of the last ten not in the top ten in terms of activity and tied for twenty-fourth most replies of any activity check)
Average: 211.4 (This should show just how absurd the recent jump is in that just these past two activity checks raise the average to above all but one of the preceding activity checks. If you average just the last nine the average is actually higher than any previous activity check.)
Media Graded Between Feb 16 2019 & Feb 15th 2020 (The day before the storm): 1755
(Average of 33.75 per week.)
Media Graded Between Feb 16 & Now: 192
(Average of 79 per week. An increase of 134% compared to the year prior. Admittedly part of this could be the lure of media week, however I do not have information easily accessible on dates of previous draft week bonuses to do a check on that. So bare with me on the slightly sloppy statistics, or if you can link me that material I will do a rehash of this at some point with updated numbers.)
Analysis Section
So based on the media graded and the activity checks we can see an approximated increase in workload for the workers of this league of anywhere from 28% to 134% approximately. This is not including all of the potential back end work which could have skyrocketed even more given the number of people who got help when they signed up, but did not complete a single activity check.
Five active graders meant grading about one piece a day which is a very sustainable pace. That translates to about 49 grades given out over the course of a season and if my pay is accurate of five million per season would justify a pay of about 100k per graded media piece. Speaking as someone who has applied to be a grader that sounds perfectly reasonable to me, however I am Agent Tesla and I am rich already. I did do a bit of an analysis here and it looks like a lot of the grading has been done by one person recently, although I will not say they did a majority of the work as different medias require different work.
My recommendation for graders would be to maintain their base salary, and add the commission rate of 100k per graded media piece. With possible bonuses for longer podcasts as they cannot be absorbed all at once like graphics or skimmed like written works. This would guarantee that pay for graders does not go down from where it is now, but that they get an added reward for their visible efforts even if not their invisible efforts. (Note: The top earner would have made about an extra 11.3 million using this system last season. The equivalent of about 6456 words of written media, and given their activity I think it safe to say they wrote at least 132 words per day in support of the league.)
There were sixteen teams in the previous season and so using Activity Checks #137-143 to simulate a season we get an average of 11.8 active players per team which I will round down to 11 for the sake of kindness to the general managers. That means that for their salary they get paid about 64k per active player. Taking into consideration that I know at least four people who have seemed to suggest they were underpaid before and for the sake of my OCD I will bump up that suggestion to 100k which is not a monstrous increase given a good general manager is key to keeping active participants. (I say this as a rookie agent given the fact that it has been two general managers in particular that have heavily motivated me to stick around, and I do not even know for certain that one of them drafted my player!)
My recommendation is similar to that of grading in that general managers should be assured their base salary, but given a bonus of 100k per player involved in an activity check. I would also apply this bonus to the pay for update workers assuming that they get paid. (My apologies on not knowing which are paid positions and which are ... the kind word for it is ... oompa-loompas.) Now I originally considered a reward based on TPE, but that would unfairly favor teams with max earners, and punish teams with pleasant players who are not max earners. Since some of the best people I have met through this organization are not max earners I do not want to punish a team for supporting them. (Note: I do not have the ability to quickly analyze who the max earner from this would be, but I will use New Orleans Second Line as the highest TPE team to get a ballpark. Using Activity Checks #137-143 they would have made an extra 10.6 million using this system over the course of a season. The equivalent of about 6031 words of written media, and given that on average I received over 100 words of contact from the general managers that reached out to me about Magnus I feel comfortable saying they wrote at least 124 words per day in support of the league.)
Once again I will reiterate I am unsure of other paid positions, however I would use a similar system as the one used for general managers. Just divide total activity check replies by the number of teams an they get an appropriate average payout like paid positions for teams. That should cover everybody who puts their blood, sweat, and tears into this league rather well. Although speaking as a rookie agent I am not an authority on any of this.
Defense of Grading System & League Employees
This will be a relatively short section, but I promised that I would defend why the system was not broken despite the millions that I have made in my short time in the league. According to the bank data there have been 2561 written pieces of media over 100 words. 1517 of those are between 100 and 1000 words. 773 of those are between 1001 and 2500 words, and just 271 of those media pieces are over 2500 words. Five of those 271 pieces over 2500 words are mine, and that is why I am not a good example to use of the grading system being broken. I am amazing Agent Tesla and that is just what I do, but a player should not have to try to get an amazing agent like myself to be able to maximize their success in this league.
The reason I use my own ledger as a comparison despite the fact that it is clear I am amazing and should be an outlier is by virtue of the fact that I do not consider myself to be a harder worker than the fine people that keep this league afloat. If the average league worker got paid media rates for every answer they gave to a question we would not even be having this discussion as they would all be filthy rich. Instead there are a few that are doing decently well and a number that are rather poor by my admittedly high standards.
Opinion Section
I have several friends who are general managers that are apparently all poorer than me and that is what motivated me to make this piece. They could do what I have done and pump out a ton of magnificent media to build up their wealth and allow them to take care of themselves to the utmost, but to ask that of them is to ask them to waste their time. Being a general manager, a grader, a commissioner, or any other position in this league is not a thing that people should want to do for the money as the brilliant Bex has said, however paying them an appropriate wage for doing so I do not think is a bad idea. My reasoning is that if they do not have to try to make ends meet in other ways then they can dedicate that time to the league and allow it to grow and flourish.
Well this last off-season the league kind of grew like kudzu whether it wanted to or not, and that is a big reason why now would be a good time to put forth changes in the financial systems. Whether it be tied to performance as I recommend above in my analysis, or just a bulk increase to account for the new traffic does not matter to me as much as making sure that the people I like decently well are rewarded for their efforts.
You might say what about after they step down? Should they be paid so well that they would still have money leftover then? I say absolutely. Because the types of people who perform this labor of love are also the types to still be helpful in the discords whether they hold an official position or not in my experience. The more helpers we have in the league the better, and especially if get another colossal sized draft class like the one that my client headlines.
Also to all of those update workers out there I want to give a special shout out to you after I had to dig through over a dozen update pages to get activity analysis for New Orleans Second Line. That was a difficult thing for me to do and the fact that you do it weekly I want to give you props for that. Additionally to anyone who handles an update page a personal request that you mark activity checks distinctly by number as it makes things much easier when it comes to data collection. Thank you to you all.
Summary
The workloads of league employees has increased dramatically and according to at least one measure by over 100%. Pay meanwhile has not increased at all to account for this boom in activity and that is assuming that pay was fair before which I am not sure that it was. Recommendation is to find a way to reward league employees based on overall activity while not removing their currently promised base wages if doing so would not increase workload too much, or to at least increase said based wages to scale with the increased activity. The floor for such a flat raise would be 80% by my standards to account for the massively increased media activity. Failing to do so could harm those currently employed by the league and turn applicants off of applying to fill league positions in the future. Something that we can all agree would be a negative turn of events.
I want to thank everyone who took the time to read this jumbled mess as I realize I probably should not have done it all stream of conscious while mildly sleep deprived, however I have done it nonetheless because I am amazing Agent Tesla. Remember the name. Also a special thank you to any league employee who read this as I greatly appreciate your work running the organization that is going to make my client into a superstar. Have a good day everyone and I look forward to talking to you all again next time.
