It’s a dark and cloudy day outside in Seattle as the first of the 3 newest prospect bowl quarterbacks enter into the pizza shop, but there’s nothing dark about their faces as they sit across from me, each of them with their drinks (which suspiciously looks like beer) in hand.
“Hey Luke,” says Colby Jack, a 6-foot 3-inch mammoth of a young man who is all smiles. Colby is one of the highest QB prospects this season, but he seems to hate the additional attention and is always willing to help out the other rookies in his class.
“Yeah, the weather out there is pretty dismal. Is it always like this in the summer?” says Monterey Jack, Colby’s twin brother. The boys are from Oregon, but Monterey went to college at the University of Lafayette, so has had mostly hot and humid summers for the past four years.
Allen Spooner, the last of the three sits down in his chair. Already known for his accurate passing abilities, Allen, with his long hair and big smile, is already making his presence known in the NSFL world. “Let’s order some pizza!” he says.
We take a break to browse over the menu before placing our order: no surprise, it’s cheese for Colby Jack, but his twin Monterey orders mushrooms before Allen orders his pizza with pineapple (pineapple?! Alone?!). As we wait for the pizza, I mention some funny meme I saw on the front page of reddit, and suddenly the four of us are bonding over our favorite reddit stories (today you, tomorrow me is voted to be a favorite) until the pizza comes out.
“You know, that’s how I decided to join the NSFL,” says Allen with his youthful voice. “I saw how awesome it was on reddit, and it pretty much solidified my decision to enter the draft.”
“Us too,” says Monterey, “although we knew we wanted to join the NSFL since we were kids. But we first found out about it through reddit”.
“Me three,” I add sheepishly. “I guess we all got our start from Snoo.”
Monterey laughs and punches my arm. “Snoo!” he says chuckling. “That’s right; that’s the little guy’s name.”
We spend the next 30 minutes munching away on our pizza, talking about other reddit stories “can you believe that Streetlamp LeMoose really joined?” before our conversation switches to the NSFL. We talk about our current NSFL heroes.
“Mine is Verso L’Alto,” says Monterey. “He is a beast of a TE and just an awesome person.”
“My favorite DSFL player is Monty,” says Colby with a raffish grin.
“Oh c’mon man, that’s not right,” says Monterey. “Now I look like a giant a**.”
“It just proves that I’m the better brother,” Colby returns with a shrug.
“I like Adam Thielen,” adds Allen, completely deadpan.
There’s a pause before we all burst out laughing. “Oh man,” I say, “NSFL players, man!”
The rest of the evening is spent finishing our beer and pizza. We talk about our hobbies (Allen is an all-around athlete, well known for his skills in hockey and baseball), and the video games we play (Monterey is an avid gamer, but there is some vocal discourse on the best video game) before Colby gets up from the table apologetically.
“Sorry guys, I gotta go. The boss is calling me home,” he says. His boss, flyeaglesfly29, is the GM for the Yellowknife Wraiths, but Colby knows that that’s no sinecure.
“Yeah, me too. Thanks for the pizza,” says Monterey. “Can I bum a ride off of you?” he asks his twin.
The two head out the door as Allen starts to get up. “We should do this again sometime,” he says.
“Anytime!” I say. “Us S22 QB’s got to stick together.”
“Until the first game,” Allen laughs as he walks out the door.
“Until the first game.”
