I flipped on the TV. As a man with well-primped hair and copious amounts of makeup spoke, a headline scrolled across the bottom of my screen. “The NBA, MLB, NCAA, and other leagues announce suspensions due to the coronavirus.”
I couldn’t believe it. The whole world seemed to be shutting down. I was worried for my own financial prosperity. As selfish as that sounded, I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d be able to keep a roof over my head. As a 26th round pick in the DSFL, it’s not like I was making big deposits. I had just moved into my apartment. Like any young athlete with their first real paycheck, I wanted a place of my own. I had finally locked up a wonderful spacious apartment with a view of the Minneapolis skyline. Now that was in jeopardy. If the DSFL paused operations, would the team owner still write the checks? I wouldn’t hold it against him if he didn’t. No games meant no ticket sales, no TV deals, and lower revenue on merchandise. That’s a big ask for any owner.
While I was stuck in my own mind, I felt my phone vibrate. It was Butters.
“I hope you’re not overthinking yourself to death, Daymond.”
“I’m trying not to, but it’s hard with all the news today.”
“Dude, relax. As long as you’ve taken out an insurance policy on your contract, you’re good to go. I doubt you’ll even need it because I heard the team owners were going to hold an emergency meeting with Commissioner Bex. I’ve heard the league plans to postpone the games, and do away with any cancellation. On top of that, the owners could pay out weekly and move signing bonuses over to cover game checks later.”
“That sounds great and all, but I try not to bank on variables.”
“You’ll be FINE. If you’re really worried about it, you could start a YouTube channel about your daily life as an athlete.”
“That is a good idea. I still have my webcam from high school...”
I started thinking about how long it would take me to learn basic video editing and script writing when my phone buzzed on the table again.
“If you’re really bored, you could come over.”
“Butters, I’m taking this social distancing thing seriously. I don’t want to risk it.”
“You stress too much, Daymond. Besides I’m clean. Don’t worry about it.”
