After going 79th to Myrtle Beach in the S21 DSFL Draft, Garfield Despacito Jr. has seen a solid rise in draft stock ahead of the big S22 NSFL Draft. Due to rumoured attitude issues making him fall all the way to the 10th round, many doubted if Despacito Jr. would end up having the quality to impress NSFL GMs enough, but he has turned out to be a very solid pick for the Buccaneers who will almost certainly go above that spot for the big league.
He hasn't been a starting wide receiver for a Buccaneers side that has been so-so this season, but has been quite solid despite that, having 8 receptions for 82 yards, an average of over 10 yards per reception. He also has 2 touchdowns this season to complement that. He will likely fill a more important role next season for Myrtle Beach after some more development.
The son of former Norfolk offensive lineman Garfield Despacito, he hasn't followed in the same vein as his father, and is more lanky and swift compared to his father's burly and robust frame. Despacito Jr. has made himself a large threat this season due to his speed and ability to lose the men assigned to him, and considering the return he has averaged to bring with his catches, there's no denying he has the ability and potential to impress in the big leagues in the future, too.
Speaking to us for an interview about the draft, Despacito had a few things to say in response to our pre-draft questions:
- How does it feel to be going into this coming NSFL Draft, coming from a family who, despite a large footballing background, has never seen a member play in the NSFL?
"I'm very excited to go into the NSFL Draft and I'm really glad to be the first of my family to make it this far. I talk with my dad a lot and he makes sure to tell me I'm making everyone proud so I just want to keep doing what I'm doing and be the best I can be."
- How has it been playing in Myrtle Beach this season, being a super late pick for the Buccaneers?
"This season in Myrtle Beach has been great and the guys there have been super supportive of each other, so they've really helped give me the motivation to keep getting better for every game and improve constantly. Getting my first couple touchdowns was a great experience too that I'm definitely never gonna forget. I hope I get to come back here next season and help out here, 'cause I appreciate the chance they've given me and I want to repay it best I can."
- Do you have any preferred destinations in the NSFL ahead of the Draft?
"I do have preferences for where I would want to be drafted, but I think one team in particular fits exactly where I want to be so I will be hoping they're the ones that do. I won't say who, but I'm sure they know. I've had talks with the team's management and met a lot of their staff, and all signs point to them being a great fit for me. All in all it's going to be a very exciting time though."
Yeah so to break character for this last part, just wanna say that to the GMs that scouted me, I appreciate the interest, but I didn't really feel like having conversations over scouting with all these teams considering that this isn't my most prioritized sim league, and I already have a preferred destination in mind. I have enjoyed the NSFL a lot and I will keep going but I'm really just not feeling up to having all these conversations for scouting and joining all these servers and such. One team that I've spoken too seems like exactly what I would want in a team to play for, so they're who I hope take me. I won't name the team, but if I haven't spoken to your team / only spoken briefly, you're not said team. The team in question probably knows it's them, or at least I hope they do haha. I'm sorry to all the teams I haven't talked with despite approaches; I just haven't really felt up to doing it is all.
