Continuing with my ' top destinations' article series, I will discuss possible destinations for this draft class's quarterbacks and how different NSFL teams' strategy will vary in drafting them.
Before we begin
Quarterback has quite unique career cycle from that of other position players. First, as all teams only have, and need, one quarterback in NSFL roster, the demand for the position is very small. So, only select few players- who are usually GM or at least veteran recreates- create and advance to the NSFL as a quarterback as players who lost the battle for starting job -rookies, in many cases- are encouraged to pursue other positions while in DSFL. Also, as quarterback users tend to have a long career carrying on through several seasons of regression, teams tend to draft a quarterback when their current starter either began regressing or will start to do so in very near future, and send the draftees down to the DSFL for a few years until the original starter retires before giving them the starting job. So, DSFL senddowns need to be considered a team's quarterback 'asset', as they are essentially the backup quarterbacks.
Unique cycles of quarterbacks aside, let's take a look at the quarterbacks in this season's draft class. There are 14 total quarterback prospects, 8 of whom are currently active at the point of march 28th update. Those 8 can be divided between several categories like this.
GM recreates: Monteray Jack(209), Colby Jack(222)
Non- GM top prospects: Ben Slothlisberger(184), Jim Waters(190)
Tier 1.5: Tom Sofa(177), Luke Skywalker(172)
Tier 2: Suleiman Ramza(134), Sim SnowBow(85)
Those 8, especially the prospects in top 3 tiers, are the quarterbacks who are likely to be taken in the meaningful rounds of this year's NSFL draft.
Orange County Otters
Franklin Armstrong is a S15 player, so he will enter regression this offseason. However, as he has 1372 TPE, it will take a long time before the time comes for him to hang up the cleats. So that makes the Otters an unlikely candidate for drafting a quarterback, as any quarterback they take in this draft will likely have to wait at least two or three seasons before they touch the NSFL grounds, and that will be a waste of player value from the team's perspective and a very disheartening factor in a player's perspective. So I think the Otters won't draft a quarterback in this draft, instead focusing on offensive weapons for armstrong, and select a quarterback in S23 or S24 draft. Or, they can draft a 'project' quarterback like Ramza and Snowbow and develop them for those several years they have.
Summary: might draft one of tier 2 QBs, or might not draft one at all.
Baltimore Hawks
The Hawks will lose Corvo Havran, as he is the player of Honolulu GM Raven, and will be automatically taken by them. However, the Hawks already have their successornready in Chika Fujiwara, last year's 5th round pick. Fujiwara, who was sent down back to Kansas City Coyotes of DSFL after being selected, has progressed nicely and now stands in line to get the starting job. As Fujiwara is S21 player and is very, very far away from regression, the Hawks will have no interest in drafting a quarterback for several seasons unless something unexpected happenes.
Summary: will not seek to draft a quarterback in this draft.
New Orleans Second Line
The Second Line is a team that need a quarterback in this draft, as their quarterback Stan Francisco, a S14 player, is already a season into regression and they have no backup options in the DSFL bar Gimmy Jarroppolo, who will unfortunately be auto retired after this season. So the Second line will be a very likely destination for one of the two Non- GM top prospects, Ben Slothlisberger and Jim Waters. Slothlisberger is more often matched with Second Line than Waters among those two as he already has connection with the team. It is most likely that the Second line will use a 2nd or 3rd round pick on QB, most likely Slothlisberger.
Summary: Ben Slothlisberger's most likely destination
Yellowknife Wraiths
The Wraiths are another team that needs a quarterback as their starter Cooter Bigsby is a S14 player and is a year into regression, and they are certainly getting one in this draft. Colby Jack, the highest TPE quarterback prospect of this draft, is a GM recreate player of flyeaglesfly29, one of the Wraiths GMs, and therefore will be automatically selected with their second round pick. Colby Jack will most likely spend a season or two back in the DSFL with the London Royals, and will step up as the starter when it is time for Bigsby.
Summary: Colby Jack's destination
Austin Copperheads
Easton Cole is a S16 player, so he has a whole season ahead of him before he hits regression. And as he will play through several seasons even after regression, so this draft might be a little early for the Copperheads to address the quarterback position. And they're in no hurry, either, as steady number of recreate quarterbacks come through in each draft class, and there's always the option of GM recreating if those players are not available. So it is most likely that no quarterback will head to Austin this season. However, the Copperheads moght decide to draft one of Ramza and Snowbow, who are considered a 'project' quarterback and take longer time to be NSFL ready, as they are likely to be agreeable to a longer stay in DSFL.
Summary: Likely to draft no QBs. Will select one of tier 2 prospect if they select any.
Colorado Yeti
Yeti's situation is very similar with that of the Copperheads. Their starting quarterback Wolfie Mcdummy is also a S16 player, so he will have a season to play before regression and likely 3 or 4 more after regression as he currently has 1212 TPE and will accumulate more through the course of next season. So, the Yeti is unlikely to draft any quarterback in this draft, and will likely select a lower tier 'project' quarterback for the same reason with the Copperheads.
Summary: unlikely to draft no QBs, will look for one of tier 2 quarterbacks if they select one.
Chicago Butchers
The Butchers are in a very interesting situation. Their starting quarterback Rose Jenkins announced that she will be retiring after next season seemingly out of the blue, and they'll need a successor for her in this year's draft, as selecting one next year will mean a rookie being thrust into NSFL without any time to accumulate appropriate TPE to be a serviceable NSFL quarterback. However, their highest pick apart from a second round one which is needed to auto draft their new GM bayley's player, is a 6th round pick, and both top prospects Slothlisberger and Waters will be long gone by then. So, the butchers will most likely select Tom Sofa or Luke Skywalker, who are only rated lower than Slothlisberger and Waters becuase of his TPE level which will be Irrelevant in long run as the difference is only about 20 or so TPE, and he is likely to be avilable in 6th round, and therefore affordable for the Butchers.
Summary: Will target Tom Sofa/ Luke Skywalker with lower round picks
Arizona Outlaws
The outlaws have their quarterback of the present and forseeable future in Jay Cue. Cue, a S18 player, has several seasons ahead of him before he even enters regression. In addition to Cue, they have George O'Donnell, a S21 quarterback sent back down to Porland Pythons who had been progressing nicely, with 309 TPE up to this point. So, the Outlaws' quarterback situation is already oversatuated, as Even O'Donnell has slim chances of being a NSFL starter for more than several years because of Cue. The Outlaws might even be considering having O'Donnell's position changed or trading him to another team, both for his and the team's sake, let alone adding another quarterback to the mix. Arizona is the most unlikely team to draft a quarterback in my opinion.
Summary: unlikely to draft any quarterback. QB position is oversatuated as it is.
Philadelphia Liberty
The Liberty's starting quarterback Brock Phoenix isnthe youngest starting quarterback in the entire NSFL being a S19 player. Phoenix will have several seasons before regression, and will play for lot more seasons. As the present and future is well secured in Phoenix, the Liberty is very unlikely to address the quarterback position for at least 2 or 3 seasons. So I don't see them drafting one in this year's draft.
Summary: unlikely to draft any quarterback.
San Jose Sabercats
The Sabercats will need a quarterback in the near future as their current starter Dan Wright enters regression this season. And that's where Monteray Jack, San Jose GM Rradum's recreate player, comes in to play. Monty Jack is the second highest TPE quarterback in the draft class, second only to the other GM recreate Colby Jack. He will most likely remain in the DSFL for a season or two with the Dallas Birddogs before stepping in place of Dan Wright when he retires.
Summary: destination of Monteray Jack.
Sarasota Sailfish
The Sailfish currently has no quarterbacks in their roster or senddown list. Their obvious move to rectify the situation is to frab a quarterback in the upcoming expansion draft. However, that is quite unlikely to happen as most teams will have their starting- and only- quarterback included in their 7 people protection list. So the Sailfish will seek to acquire a quarterback via the draft instead. They will be go after the best prospect available- Slothlisberger and Waters- as they need a day 1 starter and might use a high round pick to draft either one of those two if they are available. However, they will seek fter Sofa and Skywalker who is just as good in TPE earning perspective, if both Waters and Slothlisberger are taken.
Summary: Will target Slothlisberger and Waters primarily, and Sofa or Skywalker after them.
Honolulu Hahalua
Hahalua is more lucky than their fellow expansion team Sailfish as they will have a veteran quarterback in Corvo Havran as their starter next season. However, as Havran is a S14 player who is already a year into regression, they must prepare for the future after Havran. So they are likely to target either Slothlisberger, Waters, Sofa, or Skywalker- the top 4 available quarterback prospects- but they might be reluctant to use a high pick for them as their need for a quarterback is not as urgent unlike that of the Sailfish. So, the most likely candidate Hahalua will consider is Waters, Sofa, and Skywalker, if rumors linking Slothlisberger and the Second Line is indeed right.
Summary: Will also target top QBs, especially Waters or Sofa.
