A look at how S23 DE prospect CJ Riley fits into each DSFL team
Former Tennessee defensive end CJ Riley is in the middle of the scouting process, and released a list of what he likes about each DSFL team so far, as well as the likelihood he thinks he goes there.
Kansas City Coyotes
The Coyotes are suddenly a very interesting team. For quite awhile, it felt like they had no identity. They were good enough to make playoffs a few times, sure, but weren’t a powerhouse like Tijuana or Portland, or more recently, MB or Minnesota. They also have had some good people, but it’s never really easy to judge a locker room you’re not in. I like what the current GMs have set up there a lot. However, I’m not sure the need at DE will be great there, and most guesses think they pick too low to have a shot.
Likelihood - Low
Tijuana Luchadores
Tijuana is an interesting place. The once powerhouse of the DSFL, winning 3 straight, have cooled down a lot in recent seasons. It’s also not a place I’m super familiar with. However, I know both of the GMs there and they are great people. At 4oa, they may be in prime position to take me, and they have a need at DE as well.
Likelihood- High
Norfolk Seawolves
The Seawolves are also an interesting place. The Seawolves are the only team not including the expansion teams Dallas and London to not win an Ultimini. It’s something I wanted to do badly when I played for them in S14 & 15, but it never happened. I’d love to get another try. Also, the GM is someone I’ve known for awhile. However, there is likely another prospect in top of me that I think is a lock to go here.
Likelihood - Low
Portland Pythons
With Norfolk, the Pythons are the only other team I’ve been associated with in the DSFL, as I GMed them for 2 seasons, including their most recent Ultimini. After a tough season recently, I do think the current GMs are righting the ship after making the playoffs. I think there’s a chance I go here, but honestly, their needs are probably greater elsewhere.
Likelihood- Medium
London Royals
I’ll be honest, I know next to nothing about the Royals. They haven’t reached out to me at all. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t go there, of course, and there’s days still before predraft starts. They look to have a really active group and what I believe to be the best branding in the DSFL. I just feel like 1oa is a bit high to pick me, and my guess is they don’t feel I’ll be available in the second.
Likelihood - Low
Dallas Birddogs
I’ll just come right out and say it - I really like the Birddog’s atmosphere. I think it’s somewhere I’d fit in well. I also think DE is definitely a position they’d look at early as well. I’d love to come in and help them get their first Ultimini, and be a good locker room addition. At the end of the day, though, I’d guess there’s also 2-3 other realistic picks that can go here outside of me.
Likelihood - High
Minnesota Grey Ducks
The Grey Ducks were I team I competed with strongly in both of my seasons GMing Portland. I beat them in the Ultimini (they were still the Marshalls) before ultimately losing in the playoffs the season after. The GM is someone I could definitely see myself playing for, but after trading down to 6oa from 3oa, it’s looking a lot less likely that I’d go play there. However, if I fall, I feel like this is a good spot for me to go.
Likelihood - Medium
Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
Myrtle Beach is a team that I think I don’t mesh well with. I do like the GM a lot, from my time GMing him at Portland, but the culture fit and draft position both leave me to believe this is my least likely destination. If they got the chance, though, I’d love to play for a team as successful recently as they’ve been. And maybe a more laid back player could be beneficial right now?
Likelihood - Low
To clarify, this wasn’t meant to show where I want to go. I’d be happy to go to any of the 8 teams equally. I don’t prefer teams I marked high more than teams I marked low.
