AUS draft review in the style of Jon Gruden
R1 P1 1OA - Colt Mendoza - CB
I tell ya, there here is just a guy that really bring his A-game to the brain game. Colt's been doing all kinds of simulations, really trying to figure out how to get an edge for everyone playing the game. And let me yell you man, Colt's gonna bring a change to the league. You ever seen what a motivated team can do with a good game plan, even against a more skilled opponent? Colt's like a second coach for this team, really helping them figure out the matchup and take the game plane and make it the game win. No way that we're not going to be feeling the impact of this guy 5, 10 years from now. And the name! MEN-DOH-ZHA, just really hits you in the face just like a CB flying in for a tackle will do. This guy's not just a brainiac, he's also a good player. Has some room to grow, sure, but I am confident that in 5 years from now we'll be looking back and going, "Wowie, look at how amazing the Copperheads were with that defense" and Colt's going to be a big part of that. I wouldn't be surprised if he's promoted to defensive coordinator or head coach at the rate he's going.
R2 P7 19 OA - Troen Egghands - DE
Egghands, now that's a bit of an odd name, isn't it? But what isn't odd is how he plays down in the trenches! Good DEs, they can really run past tackles, set the edge, get into the backfield and disrupt running plays, and Troen does that. I remember the first time I met with him before a game and saw his hands, and I said to him, "Wait, you really play like that all the time, with casts on your hands?" And he says to me, "Well yeah, after I had some success in college I kept it up, kinda been my good luck charm." I didn't know what to say after that, but you look at y'know, this guy's production on the field, and you can't argue that he hasn't had good luck. Austin's got a lot of depth at d-line, they can cycle guys in an out if they need to. But let me tell you, they're going to want to get Troen in there as much as they can. He told me he was going to be hitting the weight room this offseason, And with those casts on his hands, it's almost more like a mace hitting the O-line or the running back. I'm almost surprised they allow him to play like that, but I'm really glad it's not me down on the field facing the Egghands of Troen.
R3 P7 - 31 OA - Eddie Jeeta - WR
Eddie's a great guy, a real student of the game. Very articulate, knows his stuff when it comes to running routes. And he's fast, too - doesn't always blow past the defensive backs covering him, but has enough breakaway to take advtage of a misstep or a safety caught looking the wrong way. Good hands, too, catches most things thrown his way. He's more about precision, though, y'know? Being in the right place for the throws the QB is making, really working on the anticipation and being where he can catch the ball but the defender can't. And if you didn't see him at the combine, he's got good hips, can really break some ankles and shake a defender who isn't ready for it. I don't know if he's going to be a starter from day one, but Eddie's going to be a guy setting all kinds of completion records and keeping drives alive in a year or two. QBs are going to love having someone who's got the speed to be in the right place at the right time but also the understanding of the play design to make the route decisions that the QB will expect given coverage. Eddie'll get you where you need to be as a QB, though, and I think he's going to be a great security blanket for any offense in the future. I can't wait to see what this guy'll be doing in 2 or 3 years - I figure he'll be one of the stars of the league.
R4 P6 - 42 OA - Kichwa Jones - RB
Kichwa's a running back I've watched the tape on and just stands out as a real speed monster. Like, you give him a yard and he's gone - hope you've got a safety who can get in the way! I think he's got a bit of room to grow in, y'know, understanding of how plays develop and break down. But y'know what they say - you can't teach speed. And Kichwa's got top tier speed, just got some more room to figure out when to make one cut and go or instead making a bounce out of a hole that's already filled by a defender. Some of that, I'm sure, will just come from more experience in game situations, y'know, getting a sense of what professional speed and playmakers are like rather than the college lever. And I def-in-ate-ly think this young player's got a great future ahead in the league. If Austin didn't have such other good players at running back I think he could be starting this season, but since they do I think he'll come back next season and be a great force for them. He's a real track master, just working on refining his speed and getting that 1% better form, that 1% better get-off from the line, and I think that will pay off into Kichwa being one of the top speedsters in the league.
R4 P7 - 43 OA - Tommy Sacamano - OL
Sac-a-man-o, just I gotta appreciate that name. I'm not sure I could come up with a better name of an offensive lineman other than maybe like Gruden J. Grinder, and even then it's close. I guess it's a little weird for the offensive linesman to want to be sacking players, but y'know, knowing how to make a sack is important if you want stop a sack instead. Tommy's a guy I've seen in the weight room every time I've visited Austin, He's constantly working with the O-line coach on figuring out how to block better for the running backs and QB. He's not just a lunchpail guy, he's also a breakfast pail guy, getting in here at 6am or 7am, and just putting in tons of reps at both practice snaps and in the weight rooms. I think Tommy's going to be a great force in this league, much like other greats along the lines of Givussafare Rubbe or newly converted OL Laszlo Forty-Two. He might have a few years before making it to being a pro-bowl perennial contender, but I believe in Sacamano, man.
Trade - Ryan Leaf Jr. - RB
Now while the Copperheads didn't draft Ryan, you have to give them credit for trading for one of the top 5 RBs in the league even if he's announced his retirement at the end of the year. Ryan's one of the great running backs in the league, and he can both run really well while still having the endurance to be a feature back in the team's offense. Y'know, you show me a running backfield consisting of both Mendonca and Leaf Jr. and I'll show you a team that can win it all if they execute in the trenches. You don't usually get two great RBs on one team at the same time, not when they're both top 5 RBs in the league, so seeing that here is just impressive. And yeah, sure, you've heard that Ryan's going to be retiring at the end of the year and you don't know how long other Austin greats like Cole, Mendonca, Tidewell, and Larson will stick around, but c'mon man, this team looks great on the offensive side of the football this year. I have to figure that they can be great if they execute their capabilities, and even if Ryan's only a 1 year rental before retiring that's going to be an impressive backfield in Austin this year. I can't imagine that Ryan's picked a team for this, his last year, without considering the possibilities for the playoffs, and so I have to think that Austin's got to be thinking they have a good chance going into the start of the season. I'm sure all the players there hope and think that plan will continue let me tell you, man, I look forward to seeing what comes out in this NSFL season with all these teams.
