In the Portland Python's week 7 matchup at home against the Tijuana Luchadores, rookie running back Joseph Petrongolo crossed the plane of the endzone after a two yard run early in the second quarter, putting Portland in the lead by two scores, 13-0. This was his first score in the regular season, as he failed to score a single point in the first six weeks of the regular season and the first score of his entire Developmental Simulation Football League including the preseason. Petrongolo had 67 rush yards on 17 carries in his team's 26-21 win, putting the Pythons at 3-4 on the season.
When asked about finally getting his first points on the board for his team, Petrongolo said "It feels good to finally get in the end zone and get a score for my team. But scoring isn't everything. I just want to help my team and put us in a position to win. If this allows me to score then that's great but scoring doesn't matter that much to me as long as we can win games and have a successful team".
Although Portland may be last in their division, if Petrongolo can continue to put up good games on the ground and get into the end zone more often, Portland may be able to make the playoffs because of a very tight playoff race in the NFC North conference, with just two games separating the Portland Pythons and the conference leaders, the Minnesota Grey Ducks who have a record of 5 wins and 3 losses.
Good luck to Running Back Joseph Petrongolo with the rest of his season, especially in his upcoming matchups, a week 9 matchup against conference leaders, the Minnesota Grey Ducks (5-3) and a week 10 matchup vs. the Dallas Birddogs (4-4). These two in conference games will be very important, although not must win games, if the Portland Pythons and Petrongolo want to make the playoffs this season.
