Before every draft i try to leave some pointers to those users who are new to the game. Even though this is only a game (and try not to forget that, it is important), it is pretty normal to get nervous before your first or second draft, DSFL and NSFL respectively.
So, you're new to the game. Just heard someone talk about the NSFL and decided to take a look. My advice:
- Join discord. I know, if you are not familiar with the chat app, it sounds like another app to install on your phone to bloat it a little bit more. But, even though the league functions on the forum, so if you do not have discord you can still access everything on the league, discord can really help you get familiar with it and, most importantly, with their players. You don't even need to be extremely active, but after the draft you will join your team locker room, and that is definitely the best part of the game, the connections you build with teammates and other users. Besides, if you have any doubt about your player or anything really, you might just like to talk about the NFL or current events, there is always someone online to have a chat with. The fact that you can ask something and almost immediately someone will answer is invaluable.
- Do not be afraid to participate in anything that the league offers in terms of TPE opportunities. You don't know the name of a single team and now they are asking you to predict the season standings, or to do a mock draft? Who cares, just ask on discord for help or if you are short on time, just copy and paste someone's post (do not forget to remove the quotes!). Even fantasy football, where you need to pick a team of players from the league is pretty easy to do, do not be shy and ask for help.
- Now, the draft is approaching and you start getting messages from teams representatives, asking you some questions about your commitment and your objectives on the game. This is a fun part, where you get to know the GMs or scouts and a little bit more about the teams objectives and plans for the future. Take your time and ask away everything you want to know, "sell yourself", make them think you are the best thing since sliced bread and that their organization will become irrelevant if they do not draft you with their first pick. Mainly they will be looking for your level of activity, and when i say activity i am not only referring to getting your hands in every single TPE opportunity you can, but if you will be active on their locker room after the draft. Teams tend to go for active users, good influences, before that user who is top of the class in TPE but is nowhere to be seen and no one ever talked with him.
- One of the most important things you will be asked is if you are willing to change positions. Every player can change position once without paying for it, so if you decide to do it, be really sure it will be something you won't regret. Do not let anyone convince you to change positions if you are happy with the one you chose initially. That being said, some positions are harder to be able to succeed than others, so if you decided for a QB be prepared to work harder than anyone else and your activity TPE wise to be through the roof to be a starting player for any team in the league. But if you are willing to change positions, that might make you more appealing to certain teams. If they love you as a user, but your position is well covered on their team, the probability that they draft you gets lower. Now, if after they are in love with you, you still tell them you are willing to change to the position they desperately need... you just skyrocketed on their draft board. Again, do not do it if you feel pressured to do it.
- Draft day... Sit back and relax. Nothing you can do now, good or bad, will change what you will see on youtube. If you are able to, watch it live, it really is a great thing. Discord will be buzzing, youtube comments as well, so get into it. Nothing in the game is quite like that feeling when you first get drafted into the NSFL and you get to know which team decided that you are one of the players who can help them get or stay on top. If you are on discord, you will be added straight away to the team locker room, where you will get to know your new teammates, including those players you just heard and read about on media.
- Now, there is something that might happen after you get drafted. Depending on your position, you might be sent down to the DSFL for a couple more seasons for you to rack up some more TPE to be able to compete in the big leagues. Do not be discouraged by it, it is a normal thing to happen. Use this as an opportunity to help your DSFL team to be better, to help new users into the league and, who knows, maybe try and get a GM job to get you going.
- Lastly, enjoy your time in the league. I know that the beginning might look complicated, updating, doing tasks, etc, but it gets pretty easy fast. The main thing is, if you have any doubts, reach out to anyone and ask for help. No shame in that and in no time you will be the one helping newcomers with their problems. Be free to become the user you want to be, a calm and collected one or one who wants to start beef with other teams and players just to make it more interesting. The rule with this is, do not get personal. There's people behind every player here, each one of them with their own problems that play this game to get away a bit, so do not make this an unpleasant experience for any of them.
Have fun.
