We have come to that time of the year when the draft is fast approaching. I’ve been thinking long and hard about this for a few minutes and I’ve come across a handful of players that are sure to get looked over in the early and even mid rounds but I’m going to put forward a case as to why these four players should go high in the first round of the draft.
Firstly I think we need to think about the game of football. It is in essence a simple game. The team that scores the most points wins. That’s it. So to kick this off let’s have a look at some stats from this year's DSFL.
Starting with the rushing facet of offence. The best running back eligible for this draft, Mr. R. Back, was a part of a very impressive one-two punch in Tijuana scoring 11 touchdowns himself which ends up at 66 points.
Over on the receiving side of the ball here we have a Mr. T. Cooper who managed 5 TDs as the most for a draft eligible pass catcher. This puts him on 30 points.
Now lets get to where the real points are scored - kickers. There were only really four rookie kickers in the DSFL that played the whole season. Karmichael Hunt, Kal Solarin, Datsum PhastBawls and Philip Stein. In order of their points scored this season we have Solarin on a full 100 points, Stein close behind on 95, Hunt a bit back on 87 and then PhastBawls on 66. So looking at these stats the lowest scoring rookie kicker scored the same as the highest scoring player in the rest of the DSFL.
Looking at this, let’s take a look at where I think these four kickers should be landing.
With the first pick of the NSFL S23 draft, the Colorado Yeti select - K. Solarin. Straight up with this a no brainer. Solarin scored great in his first season and will only continue to get better. So much potential here and Colorado is very lucky here to have Chicago’s pick. Chicago really could have used a player that would score points for them but in the end it’s a bang up win for the Yeti.
Baltimore is also in a very great spot here. One of the older kickers getting around in the NSFL and right here they can take P. Stein. Didn’t fall far behind Solarin himself scoring 95 points this season and that’s good enough to make it another no brainer here going at number two to the Hawks.
I think our third kicker will slide a bit down to Sarasota down in pick 6. They should consider themselves very lucky that a few teams above them are sorted at the kicking position because they definitely need some help. Kicking at 76.9% on field goals last year just won’t do it and they should have an opportunity to go out there and improve a team need. Hunt seems like the obvious answer to their problem here scoring 87 points last year and kicking field goals at 84.6% for the season.
Last, but certainly not least, PhastBawls goes to the Otters at pick 11. They can consider themselves extremely lucky here that he has fallen this far to them with teams above them already filling this need or being sorted already. Orange County has the oldest kicker in the league and it might be time to bring some fresh blood in and get him learning under the grizzled veteran. PhastBawls is a great pick for them here.
People might look at this and wonder what to do if you bring in an up and comer who is scoring your team points for fun when you already have a really good kicker but in the end I believe you can’t have too much of a good thing. Take the best player available on the draft board and it will all work out in the end. When you get a young player in their first season scoring 100 points you just have to take Solarin at number 1.
