ISFL Title Belt update after Season 23

Another season is done and that means it’s time to update the Title Belt. Well the season is almost done. I’m actually writing this a mere hour before the Ultimus is set to kickoff. I’m attempting to write all the way up to the Ultimus game before kickoff so I can write my synopsis of the Ultimus game live and post this article mere minutes after the Ultimus has ended and a champion is crowned. If you don’t know what this is, it is based on the NFL Title Belt which is a fun site that keeps track of who would own the belt each week wrestling style assuming that the winner of the first Super Bowl was the first team to hold the belt. For this season we have expanded to a 16 game schedule, so there are more games than ever before for the belt to change hands. The Yeti won the belt along with the Ultimus last season, so they start the season with it and host the Liberty in week 1.
The Yeti got off to an early 10 to 0 lead after a Banana field goal and a William Lim touchdown reception, but then the Liberty came storming back with a Donatello Arrabiata touchdown reception and then a Brandon Booker pick six to make the score 14 to 10 at the half. The rest of the game was honestly pretty boring as neither team did anything but kick field goals, but with 2:55 remaining in the fourth quarter down 1 point the Yeti scored the go ahead field goal with a 47 yard field goal from Banana.
In week 2 the Yeti traveled to Baltimore and again got off to a hot start scoring the first 13 points of the game on a McDummy rushing touchdown and two Silver Banana field goals. The second quarter saw a ton of points scored as the Hawks got on the board with two ForTheBrand field goals. That was followed by another Banana field goal and a William Lim receiving touchdown for the Yeti. With less than a minute remaining Fujiwara found Kaepercolin on a 22 yard pass for a touchdown to make it 23 to 13 at the half. Both teams scored touchdowns in the third quarter with a Kross receiving touchdown for the Hawks and an Owens rushing touchdown. The Yeti extended their lead to 13 points with a field goal early in the fourth and with just over five minutes remaining Fujiwara scored on a rushing touchdown to make it a six point game, but they weren’t able to find the endzone again and the Yeti held onto the belt in another close game with a final score of 33 to 27.
The Yeti traveled to Sarasota for week 3 and this time the other team started the scoring. The Sailfish were off to an early lead with two Dax Frost rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. The second of which was scored as time expired. Unfortunately, the Sailfish defense couldn’t catch Louisiana Purchase as he scored a touchdown on a 93 yard kickoff return, which in the box score is shown to also be at the 0:00 mark of the first quarter. In real life this would have been the start of the second quarter, but that’s just another weird quirk of the sim. Shortly after this Banks II threw a pick six to Thor Kirkby and after a Banana field goal a few minutes later the Yeti were up 17 to 13. A Jacob Small field goal near the end of the half made it 17 to 16 at halftime. Late in the third quarter Banks II found Clark Boyd in the endzone for a touchdown and then less than a minute later McDummy threw a pick six to my old teammate Jordan Andrews to put the Sailfish up 29 to 17 heading into the final quarter. With 7:16 remaining Ashley Owens scored to make it a 5 point game, but neither team scored again after that and the Sailfish won the game and the belt with a score of 29 to 24. This is the first time the recent expansion team has had the belt, and they did it before the Hahalua were able to.
In week 4 the Sailfish hosted the Liberty who now had their second chance at the belt in the first four weeks. The Liberty got off to a quick start with a Nacho Varga 29 yard pass from Brock Phoenix. The Sailfish scored the next 13 points in a row with two field goals and a Dax Frost rushing touchdown. Is Dax Frost the only layer that scores for the Sailfish? Phoenix found Varga again for a score later in the second quarter and one more Small field goal made the score 16 to 14 at the half with the Sailfish leading. Frost scored again early in the third quarter and then Torenson scored late in the third quarter to make it a 2 point game going into the final quarter. The fourth quarter was mostly uneventful as neither team was able to score until the Liberty scored on a 42 yard field goal by Lefty Louis with 1:56 remaining to take a 1 point lead. The Sailfish weren’t able to answer and their first time with the belt was short lived as the Liberty now had it. This is the first time the Liberty have had the belt since early in season 16.
The Liberty traveled to Yellowknife for their week 5 matchup. They started the scoring with a 46 yard field goal from Louis, but then Mervin Leonard got a 100 yard pick six near the end of the first quarter. After another Louis field goal the Wraiths scored again this time it was Action Jackson who caught a 26 yard pass from Cooter Bigsby. Nacho Varga joined the second quarter scoring parade with a 34 yard reception from Brock Phoenix and then Dougie Smalls ended the half with a long 57 yard field goal to make it 17 to 13 at the half with Yellowknife ahead. The third quarter started out with the Liberty again kicking a field goal and then halfway through the third quarter Brock Phoenix found Flash Panda for a 23 yard touchdown pass to put the Liberty up 6. Acura Skyline scored on a 4 yard rush near the end of the third quarter to put the Wraiths up 1 point and then neither team scored again the rest of the game. The Wraiths had successfully taken the belt and again the game with the belt was a close matchup.
Week 6 saw the first opportunity for the belt to switch over to the ASFC as with the new schedule the interconference matchups would all take place between weeks 6 and 11. Whichever conference had the belt at the end of the week 11 would have it until the Ultimus championship game. With all that said the Wraiths hosted the Orange County Otters in Week 6 in what turned out to be another close matchup involving the belt. It didn’t look that way at first as the Otters got off to a demanding lead scoring 17 points in the first quarter between a Phillips receiving touchdown, a field goal from Alex D, and a receiving touchdown from Future Trunks. Yellowknife finally got on the board halfway through the second quarter with a touchdown reception for Hardagain. The Otters scored on another field goal late in the quarter to make it 20 to 7 at the half. The Wraiths cut into the lead in the third quarter as both Hanyadi and Jackson scored touchdowns, but Phillips also scored for the Otters so it was a 7 point game going into the fourth quarter. The Otters started out the fourth by scoring another field goal and then the Wraiths made it a 3 point game with 5:33 remaining when Bigsby found Bender for a touchdown. With 15 seconds remaining Dougie Smalls kicked a 20 yard field goal and the game when to overtime. The Wraiths were on the 3 yard line when this happened by the way. In overtime the Wraiths receiving the kick and quickly had a 3 and out and then the Otters got it and quickly got into field goal range when Armstrong found Trunks for a 54 yard gain and Alex D kicked the game winning field goal a few plays later. The belt was now in the hands of the ASFC for the first time in the season.
In week 7 the Otters traveled to Baltimore and seemed to run out of gas. They only scored one touchdown in the game and it was a Nakamura rushing touchdown early in the second. Armstrong threw a pick six to Walt Green early in the first quarter to start the scoring for the Hawks. They would go on to completely dominate the game winning 33 to 13. ForThe Brand kicked four field goals and Chris Kross and Asher Quinn both caught touchdown passes from Fujiwara. The Otters only other scores were two Alex D field goals. Even the best teams sometimes choke on the road in the ISFL. The Hawks now had the belt as it seems hard for teams to hold onto the belt this season.
The Hawks would host the San Jose SaberCats in week 8 in what would end up being a very low scoring affair. The first points weren’t scored until the very end of the first quarter when ForThe Brand hit a 28 yard field goal to put Baltimore up 3 to 0. After the teams traded field goals in the 2nd quarter the score was 6 to 6 at halftime. In the middle of the third quarter Rando Cardrissian scored on a rushing touchdown for the only touchdown in the game. A McDairmid field goal made it a 10 point game and the SaberCats had the belt now.
The SaberCats traveled to Sarasota to play the Sailfish in week 9 in what was now the third time the Sailfish would get a chance to take the belt this season. They had been successful once and then immediately lost it. The SaberCats opened up the scoring with a Cardrissian rushing touchdown and then the Sailfish answered with a rushing touchdown of their own from Running Back to make it 7 to 7, which would be the score at halftime. The third quarter began and quickly the Sailfish scored again this time on a pass from Banks II to Witheblock. The SaberCats answered a few minutes later with a McDavid receiving touchdown from Jack to tie it up again. The Sailfish took a 3 point lead on a Jacob Small field goal and then in the fourth quarter neither team could get any momentum and the only score was another Small field goal as time expired, which is really hilarious to me. If a team that was ahead kicked a field goal in real life there would be so much talk about disrespect in the media for at least the next couple days, but in our sim that’s just the way it goes. So the Sailfish had now taken the belt for the second time in the season, but would they be able to hold onto it?
In week 10 the Sailfish traveled to New Orleans to take on the Second Line. New Orleans started the scoring with a Toriki rushing touchdown in the middle of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Sailfish scored 10 straight with a Small field goal and then an Angler touchdown. Near the end of the half Prohaska kicked a 49 yard field goal to even up the score at 10 a piece at the half. The Second Line then scored 10 straight in the third quarter with a McCormick receiving touchdown and a Prohaska field goal. The Sailfish would end the quarter with a Witheblock touchdown to make it a 3 point game heading into the fourth. Very early in the fourth quarter Ugarth the Dissector scored on a pick six to make it a 10 point game, but the Sailfish quickly scored with a Rayne Gordon touchdown reception to again make it a 3 point game. With just under 6 minutes remaining Prohaska hit another field goal and that was the final score. The Second Line had successfully taken the belt for the first time this season heading into the final interconference week where the Second Line would travel to Chicago.
The Second Line started off the scoring in week 11 with a Prohaska field goal to make it 3 to 0. Fast forward to the end of the third quarter and the Second Line had scored no more points. In that span Tirtawidjaja had scored on two rushing touchdowns, O’Leary scored on a receiving touchdown, and Hank scored on another rushing touchdown. By the end of the third quarter the Butchers were up 31 to 3. Both teams scored on field goals in the fourth quarter and the Butchers took the belt from the Second Line which meant the belt would stay in the NSFC for the remainder of the season.
Now that we were back to conference play the Butchers had a road game against what seems to be a familiar foe for the belt this season. Yup, that’s right, the Sailfish are back again. This one was a high scoring affair as neither team played much defense. Multiple touchdowns were scored in every single quarter. At the end of the first half the Butchers were leading 21 to 14. Hank, Oberwald, and Tirtawidjaja had all scored for the Butchers. Banks II and Gordon had scored for the Sailfish. The third quarter opened up with back to back Sailfish touchdowns with an Angler touchdown and then a Frost touchdown. O’Leary then scored for Chicago, but the extra point was missed so it was a 1 point game until the Sailfish scored field goals in back to back drives to make it 34 to 27 heading into the final quarter. With 3:24 remaining Chicago tied it up with a Farley Hank rushing touchdown, but with 12 seconds remaining Banks II found Gordon in the endzone on a 21 yard pass to take the deciding lead and win the game and the belt 41 to 34.
In week 13 the Sailfish hosted the Wraiths, and the Wraiths got off to an early lead with a Smalls field goal and a Hanyadi touchdown. Gordon caught a 40 yard touchdown pass to make it a 3 point game at the half, but the Wraiths scored all 10 points in the third quarter with a Jackson touchdown an another Smalls field goal. At the start of the fourth the Sailfish made it a 6 point game with a Clark Boyd touchdown, but then the Wraiths scored the last two touchdowns of the game with scores from Bender and Jackson to make the final score 34 to 14 and take the belt back for the second time this season.
In week 14 the Wraiths traveled to Chicago. Would the Butchers be able to make magic happen again and get the belt for the second time? They did score first with a Hank touchdown and after both teams scored field goals they were up 10 to 3 at the half. Unfortunately, the Butchers were not able to score again in the game and the Wraiths took the lead in the fourth quarter after a Hanyadi score. The Wraiths were only the second team to successfully defend the belt with a road win over the Butchers 16 to 10.
The Wraiths hosted the Yeti in week 15 and boy did the Yeti make it look the other way around. After neither team scored in the first quarter the Yeti scored the first touchdown of the game with a William Lim receiving score. A Dougie Smalls field goal near the end of the half made the score 7 to 3 at halftime. Skyline scored on a rushing touchdown to give the Wraiths their only lead of the day as following that score the Yeti scored 21 straight points. First with a Kingston receiving touchdown, then Pete Parker got a pick six and William Lim topped it off with another receiving touchdown. Down 28 to 10 in the fourth quarter the Wraiths had to settle for a field goal with 7:31 remaining and then the Yeti put the game away with a McDummy rushing touchdown late in the fourth. The Yeti now had the belt back for the first time since they lost it to the Sailfish early in the season.
The final week of the regular season saw the Yeti hosting Chicago. If Chicago wins this game they have the belt until next season since they are eliminated from the playoffs no matter what. The Butchers start the game strong with 10 straight points in the first quarter. First a Sidekick field goal followed closely by a Sean O’Leary touchdown reception. Unfortunately for Chicago, that was the final points they scored in the game. McDummy put on a passing clinic as he threw touchdown passes to Gilbert, Lim, and Bishop. Ashley Owens also got in on the scoring with a rushing score in the second quarter. Banana kicked a field goal as well and the Yeti successfully defended the belt by beating Chicago 31 to 10 and would now be bringing it with them into the playoffs where they were the 2 seed in the NSFC.
In the wildcard round the Yeti hosted the Liberty. The Liberty got off to a hot start as they scored the first 9 points of the game with a field goal and Vuxta touchdown. Gilbert added a touchdown in the second quarter and it was a 2 point game at half time. In the third the Liberty made it a 5 point game after a Louis field goal and then Lim scored for the Yeti giving them their first lead of the game. Richard D’Attoria V scored immediately after this on a kickoff return to give the Liberty their lead back and then McDummy scored on a rushing touchdown to put Colorado up 21 to 19 heading into the fourth quarter. A Silver Banana field goal made it a 5 point game, but with 6:48 left the Liberty scored on a Sam Torenson rushing touchdown to take a 1 point lead after a failed 2 point conversion. With just 3:16 remaining the Yeti took the lead back with another McDummy rushing touchdown to make it 32 to 25 in what would be the final score. The Yeti had now successfully defended the belt again and would be traveling to Yellowknife in the NSFC Championship game.
In the NSFCCG the Yeti started the scoring with an Ashley Owens touchdown, but the Wraiths followed that up with a Mike Lee touchdown. A Silver Banana field goal made the score 10 to 7 at the half. In the third quarter Dougie Smalls tied the game up with a 47 yard field goal. Neither team was able to do much in second half. Dougie Smalls hit a long 57 yard field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter to make it 13 to 10. The Yeti were only able to make it into Yellowknife territory once in the fourth quarter, but they ended up punting it on that drive and the Wraiths won 13 to 10. Not only did they win the belt back from the Yeti but they also now take the belt into the Ultimus Championship game that should be happening right after my old team the Norfolk Seawolves hopefully win the Ultimini.
After a resounding victory in the Ultimini for the Seawolves it was time for the Ultimus between the Wraiths and the Copperheads. Would the Wraiths break their curse and finally win one or would the Copperheads play spoiler again? The Copperheads started with the ball and quickly drove down the field before having to punt. Then Yellowknife had a quick 3 and out. The Copperheads quickly drove down the field and scored on a Jones rushing touchdown. Yellowknife worked their way into Copperheads territory and scored on a Jackson touchdown. The Copperheads again got into Wraith territory but a big sack from Kroustis forced a punt. Yellowknife methodically worked their way into Austin territory and Skyline scored on a rushing touchdown to take a 14 to 7 lead in the 2nd. Austin had a quick 3 and out and then so did Yellowknife. Another short drive for the Copperheads and then the Wraiths made their way into AUstin territory as time is getting short in the 2nd quarter. The Wraiths settle for a field goal with little time on the clock to go up 17 to 7 at the half. The Wraiths receive the second half kickoff and quickly get into Austin territory and Skyline scores again! The Wraiths now with a demanding 24 to 7 lead. The Copperheads make their way into Yellowknife territory, but have to settle for a Crisco field goal to make it a 14 point game. The Wraiths again enter Austin territory and Skyline scores for I think the third time in the game to make it 31 to 10. The Copperheads have to punt but then Bigsby throws an interception to Lavelle. The Copperheads aren’t able to do anything with it and the Wraiths get the ball back. After getting into the redzone Bigsby throws another interception and the Copperheads settle for a field goal to make it 31 to 13. Lee scores a huge touchdown to make it 38 to 13 for the Wraiths with little time remaining. There’s not much the Copperheads can do and they turn the ball over on downs. Congrats to the Wraiths who finally win an Ultimus after so many Ultimus losses. They keep the belt heading into the offseason and will start season 24 not only as the defending champions but also with the ISFL Title Belt in hand.
