Welcome to my “Player of the Week” awards. This edition covers week 3 of ISFL S25. Again, note that these are not official awards and are only my opinions. If you think differently, write your own damn media article. I will be naming who I think is the best player on both sides of the ball along with a few runners up, and also notable players who contributed on special teams.
First up, let's take a look at the players with the best offensive performances in ASFC:This week's AFSC offensive player of the week goes to Orange County Otters rookie quarterback Suleiman Ramza. Ramza was on fire this week, throwing for 350 yards and 4 touchdowns for a nearly perfect 134.8 rating in the Otters 35-3 trouncing of the Austin Copperheads. Ramza also added 28 rushing. The win made Orange County 3-0 to start the season, and the Otters have to be extremely pleased with their rookie’s performance thus far.
Three other Otters made honorable mention this week. Wide receiver Garfield Despacito Jr. caught 5 passes for 94 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns, wide receiver Future trunks caught 6 passes for 124 yards, and tight end Jeffrey Phillips had 10 catches for 91 yards and a score. Players other than Otters who had a great week were San Jose Sabercats running back Jamar Lackson, who rushed for 110 yards and a score, as well as San Jose wide receiver Tychondrius Hood, who caught 5 passes for 103 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Also, Arizona Outlaws wide receiver Thomas Passman caught 6 passes for 103 yards and two scores.
There were a lot of impressive defensive players this week in the AFSC, but the outstanding defensive player of the week award goes to Arizona Outlaws lineback Galf Wilf. Wilf had a pretty complete game, with 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 sacks, 1 pass deflection and to cap it all off, an interception. Wilf’s interception in the fourth quarter shut down the New York Silverbacks drive that would have allowed them to take the lead and likely win the game.
Honorable mention defensive efforts this week include Otters cornerback Korrin Abernathy, who had 5 tackles, a mind-boggling 6 pass deflections, and a pick. The Honolulu Hahalua had a couple of impressive defensive efforts, with defensive end Asher Montain racking up 3 sacks to go along with 5 tackles, and safety Davriel Lavigne with 4 tackles, 4 pass deflections, and 1 interception. Austin defensive end Carolinabbq Isbest had 6 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Silverbacks defensive end Steco Ocewilder had 5 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and both forced and recovered a fumble. New York safety Bob Roberts also had a good day with 9 tackles and another forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Finally, special teams player of the week goes to New Orleans Second Line cornerback David Rector, who had a 92 yard kickoff return touchdown in the second quarter of New Orleans loss to San Jose.
Who was the NFSC offensive player of the week? The NFSC saw a lot of high performing wide receivers this week, but of all of the, Colorado Yeti’s William Lim was the best, racking up 104 receiving yards on 7 receptions and adding two touchdowns in a 30-21 victory over the Yellowknife Wraiths (insert sad Wraiths noises here). Lim has been on fire this season as the Yeti set their sights on another Ultimus appearance.
Also standing out this week was Colorado’s quarterback, Wolfie McDummy, who had a top-tier performance (it was between him and Lim for player of the week) with 292 passing yards and 3 touchdowns for a 116.3 rating and another 21 rushing yards. Yeti running back Richard Gilbert had 104 rush yards and another 29 receiving. Baltimore Hawks rookie wide receiver Doug Howlett continues to rack up the yards with another 119 this week, and Hawks receiver Korbin Brown added another 101 and a score. Yellowknife wide receiver Kai Sakura continues to build on last year’s impressive rookie season and had 107 yards receiving on 6 catches. Also, Sarasota Sailfish wide receiver Michael Withtheblock caught 3 passes for 102 yards and a score in Sarasota’s 27-34 loss to the Philadelphia Liberty. Finally, this week was Berlin Fire Salamanders offensive tackle Byron Dolls with an impressive 12 pancakes.
This week's NFSC outstanding defensive player of the week award goes to Fire Salamander linebacker Hingle McCringleberry, who had an outstanding performance in Berlin’s loss to Chicago. McCringleberry had a total of 9 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 pass deflections. McCringleberry also had a 31 yd interception return for a touchdown midway through the first quarter. There were multiple pick sixes in the NFSC this week. Philadelphia linebacker Jeremiah Zelos returned one for 38 yards, in addition to 11 tackles, a pass deflection, and a forced fumble. Liberty cornerback Brandon Booker also added a 41 yard pick six in addition to 2 tackles and a pass deflection. The final pick six belongs to Butchers linebacker Juan Domine, who returned one for 20 yards in addition to a sack, 2 pass deflections, and 8 tackles. Chicago cornerback Tyler Oles Jr. had 6 tackles, 3 pass deflections, and 2 picks. Sailfish linebacker Haha Mango-Panda had 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and a pick to go along with a staggering 5 pass deflections.
Finally, the most outstanding special teams performance for this week goes to Wraiths running back Mathias Hanyadi, who had a kick return for 99 yards, falling 1 short of the score.
