The 7th week of the DSFL marks the halfway point in the S26 rookies debut season, a season that has been turbulent for some teams, and smooth sailing for others, with every week being different. My media pieces, however, have always been the same, and this one shall be no different.
Game 1 : Norfolk Seawolves (1-5) @ Dallas Birddogs (0-6), Birddogs win 17-14
This was the game everyone wanted to see, the most highly anticipated matchup of the week. This, was the Tank Bowl. 1-5 Norfolk travelled to winless Dallas, with the winner loser most likely getting the number 1 pick in the next draft. In a not particularly exciting game, Dallas managed to win, which actually levels the teams records up, making for an exciting battle at the bottom for the first pick.
Norfolk’s offense played ok, not giving up any turnovers, however they just could not get anything going, and were forced into 8 punts. They managed to gain just 230 yards of total offense, which pales in comparison to Dallas’ 350. On the defensive side of the ball was more of the same, alright, but not great. They got a couple of stops but didn’t manage a single tackle behind the line of scrimmage, bar a lone sack from bot linebacker Colin Thibby.
Dallas managed to overcome some sloppy quarterback play, with Caliban throwing 2 interceptions and having just over a 50% completion rate, to out-gain Norfolk by 120 total yards, thanks to great performances by both running backs, Kai and Miglaskems, who both came just short of 100 yards on 19 and 17 carries respectively. The Dallas defense performed decent during the game also, managing a nice amount of TFLs and 3 sacks to boot.
OPOTG :
Mark Callous, Wide Receiver, Dallas – Callous had quite a good game receiving, being Calibans main target with 6 receptions, for 85 yards and a touchdown. As-well as this he managed to record the Birddogs’ winning touchdown, 55 yard punt returned all the way to the endzone.
DPOTG:
Primo Berto, Defensive Tackle, Dallas – Berto played very well against Norfolk, getting himself 5 tackles, 3 for a loss, plus a sack along the way. There were some players who had stat lines potentially as good as Bertos, but they were bots, and I prefer to give it to my fellow humans.
Game 2 : Minnesota Grey Ducks (4-2) @ Kansas City Coyotes (3-3), Coyotes win 24-7
Minnesota travelled to KC in search of a big divisional win, but came away disappointed, as the Coyotes triumphed in this matchup 24-7. This means that the two teams records are now tied up at the halfway point in the season.
It was a rough day at the office for the Grey Ducks offense, with quarterback Ryan Negs just barely breaking 50% completion along with two interceptions. On the bright side he threw for 180 yards and a touchdown, a 14 yard pass to receiver Libby Newton. On the defensive side they will be a bit more pleased, forcing two turnovers, an interception from corner Bruce Brucie, as well as Damian Blackfyre recovering a fumble which he himself forced.
The Coyotes will be very happy with how they performed, with quarterback Peterson earning a 66% completion rate along with 168 yards and 2 TDs, both to receiver Owmy Back. Running back King Tutankhamun also broke 100 yards with 21 carries on the day. The defense excelled as well, forcing 2 interceptions on 7 PDs aswell as sacking the opposing qb 3 times.
OPOTG :
Arthur Naught, Wide Receiver, Kansas City – A good week so far for wide receivers with another picking up the second OPOTG of the day. Unfortunate not to get a TD, Naught was his quarterbacks favourite target, with 8 receptions for 104 yard, an average of 13 YPC.
DPOTG :
Thomas Rose, Linebacker, Kansas City – An all-around very impressive day for this linebacker who impressed in his teams solid defensive performance, with 4 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 PDs and, best of all, 2 interceptions, 1 which he returned for 35 yards.
Game 3 : London Royals (4-2) @ Portland Pythons (4-2), Royals win 20-10
Portland looked to get a bit of momentum going when London visited them after their recent win on the road to the Birddogs. They were unsuccessful however and fell to a 4-3 record after a tough loss. London are now 5-2 and the lone leaders at the top of their division.
It was a solid all-around performance for London, with quarterback Cortez doing enough to help his team to a win, with 171 yards a TD, throwing no interceptions. The no turnover trend continued throughout their whole team as nobody fumbled either. Both backs had 19 carries, with Yaki having a significantly more successful game. The defense as a whole played well as well, despite not landing a sack.
It was an uncharacteristically poor performance on both sides of the ball for Portland. On offense their only player with over 100 yards was quarterback LeBron James III, and even he threw a pick, the only turnover of the game. It wasn’t a great showing from the defense either, allowing London nearly 340 total offensive yards.
OPOTG :
Terry Yaki, Running Back, London – Yaki had a very solid showing in his teams win over Portland, being given 19 carries which he turned into 100 yards and a TD, making for an average of 5.3 YPC.
DPOTG :
L’Gazzy Burfict, Linebacker, London – Another DPOTG for this man, who had yet another great game, recording 14 tackles, one for a loss.
Game 4 : Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (5-1) @ Tijuana Luchadores (3-3), Buccaneers win 17-9
Myrtle Beach travelled to Tijuana in search of their 5th win in a row and Tijuana looked to bounce back from their narrow defeat to KC in week 6. In the end it was Myrtle Beach who came out on top in a game only separated by a single score. In fact it was a 1 point game until there were 2 minutes left on the clock, when Jackie Daytona threw a 6 yard touchdown to Alex Reed.
It was a stellar performance by both sides’ quarterbacks, with of them throwing for 170+ yards with no turnovers, however Myrtle Beach’s Daytona had 2 TDs, making him easily the better gunslinger on the day. Both MB running backs had decent games as well, combing for 175 yards from scrimmage with 28 carries and 3 receptions between them. On the defensive side of the ball the Buccaneers played well, obviously, judging by the fact Tijuanas points were in the single digits.
Luchadores quarterback Boss Jr. played alright, with 171 yards, but not well enough to lead his team to a win, with no scores. In fact Tijuanas only scores came from their kicker Bilbo. On the defensive side of the ball they performed a bit better, especially getting at the qb, registering 5 sacks. They did not manage to record a turnover though.
OPOTG :
Jackie Daytona, Quarterback, Myrtle Beach – The first quarterback of the week to win this award, Daytona had a great showing with 176 yards and a touchdown to lead his team to their 6th win of the season.
DPOTG :
NationalSimulation FootballLeague, Safety, Tijuana – NS-FL played very well for his team recording 7 tackles and a sack, as well as recording a sack. Combine this with the 52 yards he got on special teams and it’s a DPOTG award for this safety.
Offensive Player of the Week
Dallas Wide Receiver Mark Callous
Looking at pure offense it would be debatable as to whether Callous deserves the award, with 85 yards and a touchdown being debatable with some of the other players. However, when you throw in his 55 yard punt return to win the game, he wins it easily in my book.
Defensive Player of the Week
Kansas City Linebacker Thomas Rose
Rose had a fantastic game for the Coyotes in his teams great win. He was a defensive catalyst as he was the one who forced both interceptions out of the Grey Ducks quarterback. That is solid enough and 4 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 PDs is just extra at the stage, I recommend he leaves some stats for his teammates.
POWER RANKINGS
1. Myrtle Beach Buccaneers
(6-1)(-) – I think this non-mover is pretty self explanatory, considering they are the only team with a record that good, and their bad loss in Week 2 seems years ago when you look at how good they’re playing now.
2. London Royals
(5-2)(-) – Another non-mover at number 2, and again, with a great win over divisional rivals Portland, I saw no reason to move their rankings, as they are still definitely not as good as Myrtle Beach.
3. Kansas City Coyotes
(4-3)(+2) – KC jump up the rankings with a convincing win over Minnesota, who look a completely different team after their star running back. They leapfrogged Portland as well as they also lost, and KC are carrying a lot more momentum right now.
4. Portland Pythons
(4-3)(-) – Portland stay clinging on to their position in the top half due to their loss being against a better team than Minnesota’s, even though the Pythons are not on a very good streak of form.
5. Minnesota Grey Ducks
(4-3)(-2) – Perhaps if Tijuana had played a worse team they could have overtaken the Grey Ducks as well, as they look a completely different team without Vermillion.
6. Tijuana Luchadores
(3-4)(-) – Another non-mover for the week, as they played one of the leagues best teams, so it’s not really their fault as they weren’t expected to win. They could move up in Week 8, however, provided they can show up in Minnesota.
7. Dallas Birddogs
(1-6)(-) – I mean, they beat Norfolk so obviously I can’t drop them below the Seawolves, but does it really matter at this stage whether they are 7th or 8th, both teams have a singular win.
8. Norfolk Seawolves
(1-6)(-) – Nothing much has to be said.
