Cobra Kai's scouting experience prior to the ISFL draft
Drafts are usually one of the most fun parts in a players career, everyone reaching out to you to get to know you and to see if you are a great fit in a team. The ISFL is no different in this. After already having the experience for last seasons DSFL draft where Cobra Kai went 2nd overall (which meant a change in career paths from corner- to runningback), it is now already a season further then that.
I found it interesting for this season to keep a scouting logbook to use as media.
October 19th - New York Silverbacks
![[Image: NYSbanner.png]](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/747977675355979857/754901932727861288/NYSbanner.png)
The New York Silverbacks were early this year, mainly as they are actively looking for a running back in the upcoming draft, but also have a large need for other positions, so nothing they could say for certain. They did mention the chances were high that if they were interested that they would select me early as I was currently one of the top earners in the draft. First of all they wanted to know what my plans was for my player in the league, as I already have hall of famers in four other active leagues, I explained this was my ultimate goal for the ISFL as well. In order to make that I would need to find a team where I can start my career sooner as later, so I shouldn't have too many downtime seasons in the juniors. With every team using multiple running backs, it will be hard to get this goal down but we have to try. The next thing they wanted to know is how I would feel about a team that doesn’t have the desired on field performance right now. I let them know it really wasn’t a big deal at the moment as I’m used to be drafted by expansion teams in other leagues. As long as their is a proper plan available, I could be all ears for a longer career there. They also asked what I looked for in a locker room; knowing that major team locker rooms are usually less active as the junior ones (it’s like that in almost every league I’ve been in) I let him know I wouldn’t expect much of it. As long there are nice and mature people in there, I see myself having a good time.
This also brought me to my own question that I wanted to know. The plans at running back for the team. The scout was pretty outspoken about this, with currently only having Ashley Owens as their main option, playtime wasn’t much of an issue. And they mentioned as he was a bit older already, I would probably be viewed as the #1 running back for the majority of my career. I am really interested so far in this option, but of course curious what the rest will bring.
This interview was taken in the middle of the night while I woke up due to stomach cramps. I am still not sure if the note of this ended up in my scouting report of them or not. So hopefully Zayn can confirm this.
To check how much the scouting questions differ of the teams I will keep track of the subjects raised by the scout.

October 23rd- Berlin Fire Salamanders
![[Image: BERbanner.png]](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/747977609454944339/754901898594746429/BERbanner.png)
The second team to contact me was the second expansion team, so they are following the trend of starting to scout earlier. The first question they asked was a straightforward one. “Do you want to play for the Berlin Fire Salamanders”. As a rookie in this league, it’s actually not a hard question. Sure, why not. I do not know that many people in the league so far and just mostly active in our own Birddog locker room. So I do not have much too hate yet in teams besides the things that I have been told. And about Berlin, I had not heard much bad things actually. So I didn’t really see a reason yet to not play for them, at least not in a team kind of way. My concerns will follow later on. The second topic they brought up was a similar one as the Silverbacks had asked, what are your goals in the ISFL as a player and as a user. So this actually was a bit more information then New York had asked as they only asked it in general.
About the goal I mentioned the Hall of Fame goal again and that I wanted the team not to be in an endless rebuild cycle, but that I would like to have a team with a good vision for the future, that they think about their plans and what they do and not randomly go all in on one season to see it fail and start from scratch again. As a follow up on the hall of fame answer they asked in which leagues I was active and if I had any experience with this sim engine. As the EFL was one of the leagues I do have experience with the sim action, but not as a running back. I have experience as a QB (a now defunct league), TE, K, LB and my filler players were CB’s and S’s.
The locker room question was next, followed by what I would ask for in my contract. As it’s rather easy to gain money in the league, I didn’t need a high amount of money, in fact if I can take less money but it would mean I would have better people around me, then its a trade off I would take every time. The last thing they wanted to know is if I would be open to play another season down. As this might be needed for most teams, I haven’t excluded the option yet.
But it brought me down to the question that I was worried about. My prospect for playtime in this team. With King and Petrongolo it seems they have a solid duo, how would the team see my future in terms of playtime if I'm selected. This was something he couldn’t answer yet, this was all very preliminary anyway, he was sure the team management would be checking to accommodate everyone's wishes.
The interview ended with an invite to their locker room, something the Silverbacks had not thought off (or not willing to for prospects, who knows).

November 2nd - New York Silverbacks
![[Image: NYSbanner.png]](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/747977675355979857/754901932727861288/NYSbanner.png)
What is this? The Silverbacks came back for more. But this time they didn’t sent the scout, they actually sent the general manager to get to know more about me. The GM mentioned to me that he heard I was interested in joining them, which is definitely true considering their running back depth. The GM confirmed this and said that the future of the backfield is wide open for the franchise. I was curious how they would feel about having to select a runningback early in the draft. As usually I feel that the defensive positions get picked over the offensive ones, but me being currently (as time of writing) the top earner in the class, I am just not sure how far I would fall. People in my locker room are telling me I wouldn’t fall that far in this class and someone would be bound to pick me up. So while positions definitly mattered for them, they mentioned the important part would be to see if someone would fit in with the culture in New York. So the obvious question from my side was what the culture actually is? The main thing for them seemed to be that they want good, friendly and dedicated people to their team, find people they cant rely on and that others want to be around. Now I can’t say for others that they want to be around me, but I hoped to have laid a healthy base for that with trying to create some nice forum signatures for users from all different teams around the league. I know I can be relied on and I also told them that. The talks concluded with talking about my career goal and that the gm actually mentioned they would love to help their players with their career goals. He mentioned a player who wanted to mostly play MLB’er to put up certain stats and that they accommodated in that. The GM did mention my goal would be hardest to achieve on teams were a 79 speed quarterback is in place, but after him showing me a picture with a cap of 75 on their own QB, it felt like a great match.
November 2nd - Arizona Outlaws
![[Image: hagb6L3.png]](https://i.imgur.com/hagb6L3.png)
While I only replied to the Arizona Outlaws the day after, they were the third team to contact me. I was already asleep (or trying to sleep as i did see the message come in at one point), but decided to focus on getting to sleep. Instead of going the question - answer - next question routine, they opted for a quick questionnaire of pre-written messages. They were curious to what other sim league experience I had, how active I would see myself in the future and if this would change. The ways on how I would generate league money. And there it finally was: the are you happy in your current position / would you consider a position switch. The question that all DSFL teams had asked me for the previous draft. Then they would like to hear about my career goals and if I would be interested in being an Outlaw.
So the questions were easily answerable (and will skip the ones I had answered before) The expected activity, I would say a 10. It always could change but with the affiliations around the leagues and making sure you don't have to do PT's separately in any league, the chances of being burned out from these leagues are way lower. The way to generate league money also isn’t rocket science, I have been creating a lot of sigs for people and also wrote some media, Next to that I have gotten a job as a graphic grader. Since it’s the first time asked about the position switch. I can go into that question some more. I position switched to RB after the DSFL draft, and I want to stay at this position really. I know I have what it takes to be successful there and I see chances for the future in this position. For the question if I would be interested in joining the Outlaws, well, I don’t really have a preference for a team yet, but are looking for something where I can have actual playtime, the Outlaws seemed to have the deepest roster at RB at my research during this season, so I’m not sure how fast I would actually be able to start for them. But ofcourse, maybe the managers had a plan there so we would never know if there could be things in motion. Later that night the GM also got back to me when I had answered the questions. And what I expected was true, it would be hard to find a way to fit me into the team as a running back, only if he could get his running backs to switch position it would be an option, but he was not sure if they wanted it. If I were one of them, I certainly wouldn’t switch around to give their position to a new member. So Arizona is likely out of the question.

November 4th - Yellowknife Wraits
![[Image: dJKYUhw.png]](https://i.imgur.com/dJKYUhw.png)
After being contacted by one of the GM’s of Arizona, this trend also continued with the Yellowknife Wraits, as this time I was also contacted by the gm directly instead of a scout. With two scouts and two gm’s being the initial ones to send contact, I’m not sure which of the two is the usual option in this league. But we will find that out later on in this research once all teams are done if there’s a clear winner there.
The questions were really similar to these asked before, some of them actually the same letter for letter. So there must definitly be some copy / pasting going on with re-using old scouting stuff from around the league. The duplicate questions in this case contained: Are you in other sim leagues? The 1-10 activity scale and will it change? How you plan to earn money? Interest in being part of the team? The position switch? . What do you know about the sim? Goals for your player.
I feel I already answered these before, so I will focus on the questions that were different from the rest.
What do you know yet about the Wraiths? As a new player I have really not followed the main league yet, I know some people but most are from the locker room of the Dallas Birddogs. I do know one of their players a bit better as I talked a lot with him before the DSFL draft and thats SouthPaw. So while I couldn’t say much about the team, I could say that he’s quite a nice guy.
Would I be okay with another year of downtime. This topic I think I had mentioned before, but not as a seperate question. So 1 season would probably be acceptable for me, but I don’t think I should be down longer as that.
Experience with Sim Testing was another part that was asked, and while I have been asked by Dallas if I would be interested in this, I decided to say no for that. Main reason for this being that I do most of my sim league stuff during the day, and it would be hard to also incorporate sim testing in that routine.
The manager mentioned that a personal conversation could follow depending on the answers of the questions, this conversation happened later that day for me. He laughed a bit at the amount of leagues i was in , but he liked the answer on how I would avoid burning out (it’s basically playing affiliate leagues and save work like that), he agreed on my activity level so far and said that if i would keep this pace up, that HoF should be a realistic goal (so I hope he’s right about that). Next to that, he mentioned RB isn’t their biggest need, but they would likely go with the BPA and work from there, so who knows, it could be an option.
After that he asked if I had any questions, and for me the main thing was they still had two younger RB’s in Skyline and Vermillion, so I didn’t see much of a spot for me and how they would handle that. They had an option available with one going to play Wide Receiver, but they also mentioned realistically speaking, they would go defense first. It was nice getting to know the manager though.
As the questions become similar I also expect these sections to become shorter and shorter, but we will update the topic list as we go.

As I am already familiar with siddhus, this scouting interview I feel was probably on the shorter side. But they also reached out to me with some questions. They wanted to know how I felt about Honolulu on a scale of 1 to 10, my thoughts on position switching and the goals I had for my player. As my thoughts and goals have been mentioned, I’ll just focus on the the Honolulu score, and I gave them a 10/10, I love the colors, logo and team location a lot, it's really refreshing compared to the standard overused US cities in every league. For the rest we joked a bit about some stuff in the league.
Next to the message from Siddhus I also received the generic scouting questionnaire on the 9th of November, here we had some additional questions, like the league job, how do you enjoy your time in the DSFL, what is more appealing awards or the ultimus? Best friend in the league so far? How many hours you spend on the ISFL a week? Anyone you rather not play with? Joining the war room or test simming? And ofcourse their main question, if I found my mother attractive (spoiler alert: nope).

Late in the evening for me I received a message from the GM of the Colorado Yeti, he quickly introduced himself and asked how I was doing today. As I only replied around 9 hours later he probably was off. But until now I have not heard back from them.
November 9th - Chicago Butchers
![[Image: iVFr4uc.png]](https://i.imgur.com/iVFr4uc.png)
The scouting for Chicago also ended a bit early I think as he happened to catch my answers while I was in a work meeting. They wanted to know the following, where does Chicago rank in the teams you are interested in? Am I interested in position switching? Would I mind spending a few seasons in the DSFL and what is my favourite Katy Perry song. Especially the last question caught me off guard, as I know that Bayley is obsessed with Taylor Swift.
I had Chicago ranked at 9th, as I didn’t really like the name and logo of the franchise. The position switch and the send down question we can skip. My favourite Katy Perry song would definitly be Starstrukk , the one she did with 3OH!3. The scout agreed it was definitely an underrated song. He then asked how I liked some people on the butchers, I told him i didnt know the roster out of my head and that I could just answer for Bayley and that he was a good friend of mine, but that i couldnt look into the roster further. I basically meant ‘next question’ for that, as I can answer stuff, but not really look into stuff.
After Chicago, we can update the most popular question rank again:

November 10th - Austin Copperheads
![[Image: mtaczoq.png]](https://i.imgur.com/mtaczoq.png)
The scout of the Copperheads also had a friendly conversation, which was more about how I was enjoying the league and my current team. What my favourite thing about that team was. It was really refreshing to see them scout on how I enjoy it currently so they can see the core values I hold from that, what I do and did enjoy.
They mentioned that they were glad to hear I liked Dallas, as a lot of their people are also in Austin. So that was a nice match, I then referred to my team rankings article, which the scout had not read yet. But as I had triggered his attention he went and had a look. after it it was mentioned that I had a good choice in teams as my top 5 all were well run teams, so that was nice to hear. They were interested to see if I was a one team kind of guy or a Free Agency tester. So I showed my free agency history from a different league, the VHL, where in 43 seasons I only tested free agency twice. Of course I won’t exclude the option , but that really depends on the team. The next question was the send down question, by then I had mentioned my HoF aspirations , so we got to talk a bit about Zoe Watts her player and how that would play out if I would play 2nd fiddle the entire career. Next to that I asked about their plans in the draft and if there were other holes they needed to fill. And truth be told, there were some defensive spots where they would like people, so trading up and acquiring me wouldn’t make much sense. It was perhaps the most fun and relaxed scouting conversation we had so far, so well done for Austin.

November 12th - San Jose Sabercats
![[Image: YTe2q5A.png]](https://i.imgur.com/YTe2q5A.png)
So we are nearing the pre-draft startdate and it is showing in the increasing activity these days. The next team to contact me where the Sabercats, and they started out with the question how I was liking the league. Looking at my list below I am kinda weirded out at the moment as I don’t think others had asked it, or otherwise I might have just forgotten to add it to the list. Things like that happens when you write an article spread out over a few weeks. But to answer the question I must say I do enjoy the league a lot. The friendliness of the people around here has made me more active then I originally had planned. As a follow up he asked me who got me here, as I told him I was asked to join. So when I mentioned Opera Phantom’s name, he was quickly to respond that he probably wasn’t the Sabercats their biggest fan right now, and that really cracked me up. So we both kinda joked around about the interception thrown by the SJ GM, only to be nullified by the interception Cue threw which costed Arizona the game. The next question was about my interest of joining the Sabercats
I didn’t really had any negative feelings against them, but did wanted to know how he saw their situation at running back in the future. But they had a couple of well earning running back’s, but he wanted to make sure to reach out to a fellow birddog (alumni) and the top earner so far in the class. So that obviously brought them to the position switch question. Since we know my answer there, he decided to not waste my time any further, but it was a pleasant introduction to the team and they mentioned they would love me on their team in the future and that perhaps they would try to acquire me somewhere during my career. So that’s a big if either way, as no one can tell what happens.
November 12th - Sarasota Sailfish
![[Image: SARbanner.png]](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/691424486926319616/692181074876563556/SARbanner.png)
As it was a busy day for scouting, you probably noticed the list wasn’t updated yet. I’ll do that after all the november 12th interviews. The Sailfish were next, not shortly after the Sabercats. Their first question was how I felt about the league so far. As the team wanted to make sure that when they would draft a player, they knew how to accomodate a user as much as they can, a real nice attitude already from their first question. After that they wanted to know how I would rate my activity and how it would be in the future, which is also a question answered before, just like the specific plans for my player. The position swap question also wasn’t a stranger to them and that was followed up by the question of an extra season of downtime. While it wasn’t asked a lot, also the next two questions were already answered, the contract type and sim experience and the willingness to learn the sim. So not much to add here based on their questionnaire. They did toss out a locker room invite though, so that was also added to the list. We ended the interview with a question of my own, as I was interested if there would be a way for me to fit in incase they would draft me, and the answer they gave was really reassuring. Lots of young talent and they mentioned they would make sure to shuffle their hands (and that one of their players was really flexible on where he plays) once put in the position. This really makes it sound like it’s a team that knows how to plan ahead and had definitly gathered my interest.
So with the 12 november interviews done the list now looks like this.

November 13th - Orange County Otters
![[Image: 8kqUlpH.png]](https://i.imgur.com/8kqUlpH.png)
The Orange County Otters were a bit late and they were the first to admit it, in fact he opened with an introduction and apologizing it took so long too reach out. Since there was a limited timeframe and the team had limited assets in the draft, he opted for a quick questionnaire, with follow up questions if needed. He also offered up to make sure I knew to ask questions back if I wanted to. Question 1 was a rather long one, as it were three questions alone. How I felt about my DSFL season, if I was happy with my locker room and stats I put up, and what my favourite part of the season is. For the sake of the checklist I will check this off as ‘enjoying the DSFL’, as this question really is about enjoyment, but they wanted to make it as broad as possible. Next to that they asked for my career goals, a question that is amongst the most popular ones for the ISFL team to ask about. A question none of the other teams asked yet, but a question that really could be important to try and make your new draftees happy, is the question if there was a specific other player in the draft you would like to play with. It’s great when two friends sign up that they could end up on the same team as it could really bind someone to a league. I have decided to not answer this question though, as I feel it would force the hand of the team that drafts me. The only reason I would ask for this, would be if my wife started up sim leagues again. So to all prospects not mentioned by me, it was not personal. They also wanted to know if my activity would change, or if there would be life events that would influence my earning. Which I informed them this would not the case, at age 37 my life is at a really normal pace right now where no changes are to be expected.
The question was followed up by the income question, since I am writing media , making graphics and grading graphics, this one was easily tackled. The position switch question also could not miss in their questionnaire and the last question was if I wanted to be called up immediately or if I would like more time in the DSFL.
After the questions he mentioned to me I was certainly getting some nominations for the awards, so hope to actually be able to take an award home on award night. He also mentioned on my HoF aspirations that this would really be a hard goal, but that I definitely should not give up on it. The limit on starting sports however will be the biggest hurdle to take. I did offer the scout a position switch myself as well, as that could make room for my player, but he politely declined. So after that we briefly discussed the playoffs as I mentioned the Otters feel like a well run team. And ofcourse he agreed with that, but was a bit sad about the outcome of the playoffs. I shared that feeling with him as I only got 1 tpe from these predictions. This was still before the Ultimi, and we both though that if the Sabercats would win, that there must be a conspiracy in place. But we probably jinxed that ourselves with these assumptions as they indeed went on and won it.
November 13th - New Orleans Second Line
![[Image: IY7NW3K.png]](https://i.imgur.com/IY7NW3K.png)
Despite being the last team to contact me, I must thank their scout for the really personal introduction. Instead of opening with a standard copy/paste response, he actually reached out saying I must have had garnered a lot of interest, especially with the awesome graphics I had created. So this really felt like a good conversation straight from the start. He also had some basic questions as NOLA was certainly interested in adding a RB to their roster. So they wanted to know about my goals both as a user and a player. They were interested if I wanted to be called up immediatly or play in Dallas for one or two seasons. If I wanted to stay at running back and where I would like to be drafted too. Only the last question was a unique one, so I answered it purely based on my rankings article i made before and answered the Honolulu Hahalua, purely as I like the location and teamname, but that I do not know how they would fit me in at this point. So we continued talking about the situation at running back in NOLA, with Gump and Toriki they have one of the oldest duo’s in the league, so was wondering what their plan was there. They already have called up Rotchburns for next season to replace Gump, so the next RB to be drafted there would be Toriki’s replacement. With just wanting one season downtime max, this actually didn’t turn out to be a problem for them.I was quite direct about this with them, as I didn’t want to be the reason a long tenured member of a franchise would be pushed towards the exit, and they appreciated my honesty in this but assured me it was mutually discussed already with them. We talked some more about the RB strategies a bit, and the reason why he only reached out so late. It was a nice talk, but they did mention that RB wasn’t their #1 option for the draft, so they would probably look for me if they would get a late 1st or early 2nd round selection. It was fun to see that this interview actually skyrocketed the Second Line compared to my initial rankings article into one of my favourites heading into the draft.
Conclusion
So with the interviews of the last two days I can say I was interviewed by 13 from the 14 teams, and despite my expectations, not every team asked about a position switch. As I believe all teams in the DSFL asked me before, it was something I kinda expected to happen here as well. It could be that they actually did their job, as it should be out in public somewhere that I didn’t want to switch positions.

It was a nice experience being scouted by so many teams, but sometimes I felt I was just telling teams the same thing over and over (logical ofcourse as they dont have access to each others scouting details), but I would like to tell the teams to have more actual conversations then just dropping a questionaire, as that is the best way to actually get to know the people and see if they are a nice fit. The main thing I liked to see what the difference in timing, we had a few teams that scouted really early on (and actually making me feel like others weren't interested) and the surge of interviews when we got closer to the predraft.
Hope it was interesting to see the differences between the teams their scouting questions. It was been fun keeping track of it, but also a hell of a job to turn all scouting messages into an article. Glad I will not be drafted anytime soon again after this player.

But this brings us to the following overview (sorted from most popular to least popular questions)
