"Hey there it's Dale Murphy, and I'm here for the first of my two bi-weekly Lunchadore updates. That's right New Orleans, you are once again privileged to hear what I have to say about those Lunchadores, and specifically Jonathan Shuffleboard and Vincent Jones Jr.
The Lunchadores are sometimes called the Second Line's developmental team, with so many players on Tijuana making the move to New Orleans.
Overall the Lunchadores defense has fallen off as of late, as has the whole team. The Lunchadores had a rough week last week (weeks seven, eight and nine) and found themselves at the bottom of the standings, with just about no way to climb out the whole they had dug. While their defense was a big part of their 3-3 start, it fell off in the last few games that sent them tumbling to the bottom of the division at 3-6. With the playoffs not looking too good for the defending champs, they will be trying to play spoiler in the remaining games, and look see how some of their prospects will finish developing before moving on to the ISFL.
In week ten the Lunchadores travelled far North to face the Minnesota North Stars in Minnesota. This was a game where the Lunchadores defense showed up, holding the North Stars to just 13 points on the game. With the score 14-10 Lunchadores and 10 minutes remaining, the North Stars were moving the ball down the field with a chance to take the lead in what was a tight game. But the Lunchadore defense held firm, forcing the North Stars to settle for a field goal. The Lunchadore offense scored a field goal with 30 seconds to go to just about dash the North Stars hope. With 30 seconds needing a touchdown the North Stars were able to complete just one pass, and the score was the final, 17-13.
Vincent Jones Jr. had another great game for the Lunchadores, amassing four tackles and one sack.
Jonathan Shuffleboard did nothing. That's right, a big fat zero for him on this game. We still believe in his ability to crack the Second Line roster in about two seasons, but a game like this shows why next season is off the board for him.
With the win the Lunchadores improved to 4-6 and were just two games out of the division lead, but with so many teams to hop it doesn't seem very likely.
In week eleven the Lunchadores played host to the Kansas City Coyotes. Kansas City was 0-10 at the start of this game. A win for the Lunchadores was almost expected, and would have put them just a game behind all the other teams in the division. However, that was not to be. Kansas City had a 20-0 lead in the third quarter before the Lunchadores managed to score points. The Lunchadores pulled to within 10, at 20-10, but the Coyotes marched right down the field to take a 27-10 lead. That would be the final, the Lunchadores never really managed a response to that Coyotes score. Overall a disappointing night for the defense, giving up that touchdown drive to give the Coyotes the 17 point lead seemed to kill any hope of a comeback, all momentum that the Lunchadores had seem to build up by scoring ten straight evaporated into thin air, and they lost by the 17 points. Giving up 27 points is a loss for the defense. If there is one thing we know for sure about this Lunchadore team it is that they will win more games when their defense is very good. They just don't seem to have the offense to win a higher scoring game, so the defense has to pick up the slack for them. Giving up something like 10 or 13 points is good, 27 is just not going to cut it.
Vincent Jones had five tackles on the game.
After a quiet game earlier in the day, Jonathan Shuffleboard had three tackles on the day.
Eleven game into the season it is now a great time to update the New Orleans' faithful on the two prospects seasons stats. (This also happens to be an article that will hopefully hit 1000 words for the double media, so I really have to ramble a little bit).
In eleven games, Jonathan Shuffleboard has started well, eleven games. He has registered 48 tackles (a bit over 4 per game), has one sack and one interception. While ideally you'd like to see your safeties have a lot of defended passes, Shuffleboard has just one on the season.
In eleven games, Vincent Jones Jr. has started, well, eleven games. He has registered 75 tackles (just a bit under 7 per game) from his linebacker position. He has an incredible seven sacks on the season. His ability to blitz from the linebacker position is something I would expect to see follow him from Tijuana to New Orleans when he makes the move, look for fire blitzes features Jones Jr. coming at QBs. Of his 75 tackles, 6 of them were for losses. He has one interception on the season. His five pass defended show that he has the ability to drop back into coverage either in zone, or on tight ends and running backs in man. Jones is living up to what made him the Second Line first round pick in what may be his final season in the minors.
For a quick update on the standing in the SFC of the DSFL.
Norfolk Seawolves 6-5
Dallas Birddogs 6-5
Bondi Beach Buccaneers 6-5
Tijuana Lunchadores 4-7
The Lunchadores are all but out of the race for the two playoff spots. While they may have surprised some winning the Ultimus last season, including a massive upset of the then Myrtle Beach Buccaneers in the first round, it seems like this season they won't get a chance to show off some playoff magic.
That was today's, Lunchadore Second Line update, brought to you by Pepsi.
Until Next Time,
Signing off,
Dale Murphy"
