I wanted to look back to this same point last season and see how each team was doing then compared to how they are doing now. With three games left in the season, a lot of changes in the standings can still happen, so let’s take a look and see how much changed in the final three weeks of S25 to see if we can get an idea on how this season might play out.
Currently the standings in the DSFL are as follows:
SFC South
Norfolk Seawolves – 6 – 5
Dallas Birddogs – 6 – 5
Bondi Beach Buccaneers – 6 – 5
Tijuana Luchadores – 4 - 7
NFC North
Portland Pythons – 10 -1
London Royals – 6 -5
Minnesota Grey Ducks – 5 – 6
Kansas City Coyotes – 1 – 10
If we look back to last season, S25, the standings at this point were:
SFC South
Myrtle Beach Buccaneers (now Bondi Beach) – 8 – 3
Tijuana Luchadores – 4 – 7
Dallas Birddogs – 3 – 8
Norfolk Seawolves – 2 – 9
NFC North
London Royals – 8 – 3
Kansas City Coyotes – 7 - 4
Minnesota Grey Ducks – 6 – 5
Portland Pythons – 6 – 5
Big things that are jumping out to me are that the teams at the bottom of both conferences last season are now at the top. Norfolk and Portland have both swapped their places from last season to this season.
The Portland Pythons had the biggest change of all the teams on the winning side of things, going from 6 – 5 to 10 – 1, adding 4 more wins and having 4 less losses. The Kansas City Coyotes made the biggest changes the other way, winning 6 less games and losing 6 more games then last season.
Minnesota seems to be the most consistent team, having just flipped their 5 – 6 record last season for a 6 – 5 record this season.
There probably is a proper way to do this, but I don’t even know where to start looking for it and I'm kind of lazy. I wanted to come up with a number to associate with each teams difference between the season, so I’m going to add a +1 for each improved win record.
So, the Portland Pythons would get +4 for their 4 more wins on the season. Using this ‘formula’ the league looks like this:
Portland Pythons - +4
Norfolk Seawolves - +4
Dallas Birddogs - +3
London Royals - +2
Minnesota Grey Ducks - +1
Tijuana Luchadores – 0
Bondi Beach Buccaneers - -2
Kansas City Coyotes - -6
What does this mean, I have no idea, all this is telling me is that Portland and Norfolk have done a lot better up until this point in the season and Kansas City has not been doing so hot compared to last season.
The next think I looked at was how the teams did from this point of last season. Were they able to close out the season strong or did they limp into the playoffs, or miss them all together?
If we look at the final three games on S25, we see that two teams won all three of their final match ups, with the London Royals and the Mrytle Beach / Bondi Beach Bucaneers both going 3 – 0. On the flip side, there were two teams who did not win any of their final three games, both the Norfolk Seawolves and the Kansas City Coyotes went winless in their final three games. Here are all the teams records:
Norfolk Seawolves – 0 – 3
Mrytle Beach / Bondi Beach Buccaneers – 3 – 0
Dallas Birdogs – 2 – 1
Tijuana Luchadores – 2 – 1
London Royals – 3 – 0
Minnesota Grey Ducks – 2 – 1
Portland Pythons – 1 – 2
Kansas City Coyotes – 0 – 3
Now if we look at this seasons records right now, and add on what each team did last season in the final three games, the final standings for S26 would look like this:
SFC South
Bondi Beach Buccaneers – 9 – 5
Dallas Birddogs – 8 – 6
Norfolk Seawolves – 6 – 8
Tijuana Luchadores – 6 - 8
NFC North
Portland Pythons – 11 -3
London Royals – 9 -5
Minnesota Grey Ducks – 7 – 7
Kansas City Coyotes – 1 – 13
But we all know that the chances of every team repeating their last three games record from last season is very unlikely. I figured using my made up formula I used earlier, I could apply a per/game number for each team, using the +/-amount I’ve used for each teams change from last season. Doing this found the following:
Portland Pythons - +4 / +0.36 per game
Norfolk Seawolves - +4 / +0.36 per game
Dallas Birddogs - +3 /+ 0.27 per game
London Royals - +2 / +0.18 per game
Minnesota Grey Ducks - +1 / 0.09 per game
Tijuana Luchadores – 0 / 0 per game
Bondi Beach Buccaneers - -2 / -0.18 per game
Kansas City Coyotes - -6 / -0.05 per game
Once again, I have no idea what this means, but I’m still going to muddle on. If I use this per/game number and multiple in by the 3 games that are left, I will try to predict what each teams last three game record could be.
Portland Pythons – 1.08 = 1 more win (2 – 1)
Norfolk Seawolves – 1.08 = 1 more win (1 – 2)
Dallas Birddogs – 0.81 = 1 more win (3 – 0)
London Royals – 0.54 = 1 more win (3 – 0)
Minnesota Grey Ducks – 0.27 = no change from last season (2 – 1)
Tijuana Luchadores – 0 = no change from last season (2 – 1)
Bondi Beach Buccaneers - -0.54 = 1 less win (2- 1)
Kansas City Coyotes - -0.15 = 1 less wins (0 – 3 - can't go any lower than this)
Well, I just proved that this thing I made up makes absolutely no sense. With a total of 24 games remaining, these number show that there will be 15 wins and only 9 losses. I’m an idiot and have wasted my time and yours. My sincerest apologies for that, but can you blame a guy for trying?
So, what I’m going to do is try and predict the final standings of the S26 DFSL, not by using my horribly incorrect formula, but my intuition and the ‘knowledge’ I’ve gained while researching this:
SFC South
Norfolk Seawolves – 8 – 6
Dallas Birddogs – 8 – 6
Bondi Beach Buccaneers – 7 – 7
Tijuana Luchadores – 7 - 7
NFC North
Portland Pythons – 12 -2
London Royals – 7 - 7
Minnesota Grey Ducks – 6 –8
Kansas City Coyotes – 1 – 13
Good luck to all the DSFL teams in their remaining games (except any teams playing Tijuana), and also to all the DSFL rookies who are getting prepped for the upcoming ISFL draft!
Oh, and Happy New Year everyone, hopefully 2021 is kick ass for all of you!
