"Hey all, I wanted to thank you for coming out today to listen to me this afternoon. I know you all have had a busy couple of weeks leading up to the draft and I appreciate your appearances here. I just wanted to start off by saying that over the past couple of days I have had some pretty good workouts with teams and I am feeling good going into the Development league draft. It has been a tough road for me the past two years and I am grateful for this opportunity to continue playing the sport that I love."
"Can you give us a quick rundown of the workouts you attending the past two weeks? I know you specifically asks for no media to attend your workouts, so we are a little out of the loop on what went on."
"sure, and I totally understand that the media is necessary, but to have my mind at 100%, I felt it best to just be between me and the scouts. I had six workouts, each of them with a different team. We went through my daily pre-practice routine and some situational attempts. I felt like I excelled in most of my kicks. They also had me do some punting and kickoff coverage drills. After that we got into the interviews. Some of them were brief, and some were more in-depth. I feel the teams that I got more in-depth with got a better view of me as a person and will see that I am ready for the opportunities ahead."
"What was one thing that maybe you were not expecting coming into these tryouts?"
"Well, that is easy, haha. I never had to punt in games before. I mean, I have definitely practiced them for worst-case scenarios for my teams, but I never actually had the opportunity before. Being told that it is going to be required for me to be both the punter and kicker in games is a little bit of a shocker, but I think something that I can work myself into. I was even surprised that they had me STRICTLY punting in the the prospect bowl games. ha. A player who has never punted in a game being the starting punter for one of the teams was kinda cool, and I think I held my own at the position. I was just really hoping to be able to showcase my kicking ability more as that is, in my opinion, my strength coming into this league."
"With the interviews, Any questions that stood out to you from the teams?"
"Uhm, no not really. The days have kinda blended together and it was a whirlwind of questions... I guess one that I can remember that wouldn't be considered 'normal' for the scouts, they were asking about some video games that my dad got me into when I was younger. The games are about 40 years old now, but he said they were classics that I had to play, and I will admit, they are fun, but they are different compared to all of the video games we have now. My dad was a little bit of a niche nerd. he would really get into certain things without going head first into the whole genre. I honestly don't know what I would've said if I wasn't introduced into those so long ago. So yea, I guess that would be a question that stood out."
"After going through the interviews, are there any teams that you are hoping to be, or not to be drafted by?"
"I guess I am open to joining most teams, but there were definitely some headscratching days out there."
"Care to elaborate?"
"Uh, sure. Not sure how much you are looking for here...?"
"Give us a rundown of the teams you had good or bad interviews with. that should be satisfactory."
"Ok. Well I had good interviews with Norfolk, Dallas, Tijuana, and Minnesota. We had lengthy discussions about a variety of topics and went over what my goals were going into the the DSFL and if I had aspirations of making to the International stage in the pro league. I'd be fine going to either of these 4 teams, but I really had my eyes on Tijuana and Minnesota."
"Would it be a little bittersweet to be able to play for your hometown team of Tijuana Luchadores? did you ever go to any of their games as a kid?"
"A lot of people keep mentioning that to me, but I really do not have much memory of Tijuana. Sure, it is my birthplace, but when I was very young, my birth family moved to the U.S., so I really do not consider them my home team. Sure, I'd love to play for them and I think they are a great organization, but I have no ties to the city of Tijuana over another location, such as Dallas or Norfolk.
I guess I will carry on about the other teams. I was really hoping to hear from the Pythons and Buccaneers. Those were two of my top destinations, but I never got a call for them. I understand there are quite a few kickers in this draft that are all probably higher ranked on their draft boards than me, but man, I was really hoping to at least prove to them that I am worth even a late round pick. But it's whatever. It'll feel weird if they end up drafting me, but hopefully the other teams listed will grab me before that becomes an issue I have to deal with"
"And what about the Royals and Coyotes? you have not mentioned them yet. Did the interviews go well with them?"
"With the Royals, I felt we got off to a good start, but the interviewer got a call in the middle and left the room. I sat there for about 30 minutes before checking the hallways. I guess the interview was done, because they turned off the lights in the facility and only the janitor was left. He showed me the way out after he realized I was still there. Good guy. Funny guy.
And with Kansas City, I was a little irked from the beginning. Maybe irked isn't the best word, but I saw pictures of my adoptive father everywhere, and it felt like I was trying to follow in his footsteps if I ended up playing there. I don't know, it just didn't sit right with me. I sat down for the interview and I just told the scout straight up, I can't play here. It was weird, and nine times out of ten I would not have said anything, but at the time I just felt like I need to make my own legacy."
"Do you have a clue on where you might fall in the draft?"
Yea, I asked them what they thought and each said my tryouts were good and that I would be considered a top-two kicking prospect, which I am happy about. In terms of where I fall in the draft? Heck if I know. That's for the geniuses behind the mahogany tables to figure out. I will just be happy to be on a team and prove that I do belong in this league. Hell, have me go undrafted. As long as I get an opportunity to showcase my stuff to a team, I will have done my job and then I leave it up to the team to see the potential in me.
Thanks everyone for coming out, I got dinner reservations I need to get to, but I will be available on draft day for more questions."
