The Tremendous Johnson Year in Review.
Well it was my first official season here in the DSFL, and I got to say it was a blast. I had a minor stint as a waiver toward the end of last season but I will be honest I was not feeling it all that much. However, towards the end of that when the scouting and drafting process started beginning is where it really started to pick up interest, I do not know really know why, maybe it is something on the lines of as a waiver your kind of just grabbed and slotted in like a "Oh sure I guess just go here" type thing, where the draft process is a lot more engaging and I think drove the interest up more for me because it would mean made a decision on me actually based off of something. So it was a cool process.
I do not know how much promise I showed at line backer from my waiver time, if I recall correctly it was about 20-30 tackles and 2 or 3 interceptions (I can not really check the sim for some reason it just shows all zeros). So I was not expecting too much and was hoping a late 1st early 2nd selection. I decided to take a whack at joking around on the twitter and in the discords lobbying for a 1st round selection on some random BS.
I did to my surprise get drafted number two overall by Bondi Beach, this way exceeded my expectations as I did not think that it would actually work, and I was super stoked that a team took that big of a leap to choose me. And honestly I think that is what really fueled the fire to get rolling in this league for me, I did not want to be one of those who get picked and just half earn and eventually taper away. So I set a goal after that to try to be one of the best.
It did not take me too long to believe in myself as by the end of preseason I had 35 plus tackles 3 deflections and 4 tackles for a loss. As a rookie I thought this was pretty good and just gave me the idea that I was doing right by my build. It got the e-adrenaline and ego flowing. We went into the regular season and picked up right where we left off. One high point during this was a 16 tackle game in Week 2, which was probably in my opinion the highlight of the season. It got me super hype honestly to the point that I thought I set a team record only to find that the index gets a little wonky when you change game engines but it was still a really nice feat in my opinion as its already hard enough getting double digit tackles, but having over 15 made it really interesting. Those fantasy numbers probably would have been wild.
Week 3 or 4 of the season I think is when I started to notice I was competing at the top of the leaderboards in terms of stat leading, and really started to build toward making that the case of trying to establish my self as the sims seemed to be going in my favor. The team in these cases were in a rough spot as we were 1-3 before going on a nice streak taking 4 of our next six games. Putting us back close to contention to make the playoffs. Throughout this time the numbers still kept piling up and I think it was in this time I notched my 100th tackle of the season which to me was a big milestone.
The rest of the season kind of just had me laced at the top of the board by a decent margin for most of the time, so it was just a matter of putting up numbers at that point where I was not fretting on losing the top spot. The team was able to get it together even though it came down to the last game of the season and we were able to sneak into the playoffs even though we got knocked in the first round. It was a really big feat in my opinion as our offense was very rookie heavy in terms of receivers with 2 rookie TE's kind of having to lead the way with only 1 active receiver and our running back core. It just seemed really dependent on the raw talent and build of the tight ends. Chevvy put up insane numbers to me and I hope he gets some nods towards awards. But it showed that with our core we are a team that can compete and just need a small catalyst to put us over that hump and take over this division. I am looking forward to the next season in Bondi and am ready to just pick up where I left off.
In all honesty I did not expect to put up the numbers that I did, my guess being a rookie I was kind of hoping for about 70-80 tackles, a few sacks, and some picks. I did not want to be a speed rush linebacker or run stuffer, when I made my player I was in a big decision between LB and safety, so I decided to try to be a hybrid style why I went versatile to the point I could be a lock down style player if I had to go into pass coverage, and also be able to stuff the run if needed. I was not too worried about sacks honestly, I was definitely more concerned about tackling and stopping the offense and the tackles plus the deflections are the things that stop the offense and scoring touchdowns.
My build style was that I was thinking in a console gamer mindset and how those games work where awareness is a big stat, so I wanted to go big into Intelligence as a stat, to make myself a type of playmaker and be able to cause things to happen maybe I should have done a bit more competitiveness to force some fumbles but it is what it is.
All in all I have had a great time so far, and I really like the community here in this league and I look forward to continuing on and seeing where I end up going in the draft. I hope I did enough to still be in the first round. And am curious to see if history repeats itself and I go early again like I did before. I do not think I go first Overall, but I also did not think I would go as high as I did in the DSFL draft either, so maybe I should not sell myself short. Beating out a lot of the vets by a good margin as a rookie I do not think is much to scoff at. Good luck to all the other rookies about to get drafted, and see you all next season.
