Hello and thank you for joining me today as we break down the prospect profile of Matthew Bee, a Safety entering this years DSFL draft.
Matthew is a Minnesota native, growing up out of Duluth, Minnesota. In high school, Matthew was a 2 way player like many are, playing both Safety and Quarterback. Matthew led his team in tackles in both his Junior and Senior year from the safety position, as well as throwing for over 30 touchdowns a year leading his team to back to back state championship berths. Matthew went on from high school as a 4 star recruit, deciding to stay local and playing for the University of Minnesota. He came onto the program as a day 1 starter at Safety due to his defensive prowess. Matthew, playing 2 years as a starter at the University of Minnesota, would average over 70 tackles and 20 passes defended per season. We were able to catch Matthew as he was prepping for the draft in his hometown of Duluth, to ask about his career so far.
"This is all so surreal to me. It's like I am in a dream still. I always hoped this day would come but I never thought it would. I have all my coaches to thank for this, as well as my family for supporting me in every way they possibly could. My mom for coming to all of my games and making sure I made practices, my dad for introducing me to the game and helping me get better, breaking down film with me, and my brother for playing with me my entire high school career. Without them I would never be here." - Matthew
So Matthew, tell us, what was it like playing in 2 state championships in High school? This is something that very few people get to experience.
"It was unreal, but it was not just me that got us there. This is a team game. Everyone has to work together to be there. But the atmosphere? I mean it's U.S. Bank stadium, that place got packed for us and it really pushed me to be the best I could be. Be the best player, the best leader on the field. It drove us all to succeed in those games. I owe a lot of that success to my coaches, as well as my teammates. I believe I had some of the best, if not the best, High school coaches in the entire state or country. These guys did everything possible to make it so we all were successful, not just on the field but off the field as well. Offering to stay late to help with anything I needed, homework or drills. I owe it all to them. My teammates stood by me in whatever happened and I am truly grateful for them as well! I will always hold fond memories of all of my teammates back home, here in Duluth."
Very well put! Glad to see recognition to coaches and teammates. In a team game it is important that everyone is on the same page. Now going to the University of Minnesota was a pretty big shock to people. You had offers to Texas, Georgia, and Michigan, what drove you to choose Minnesota over all of these prestigious schools?
"I've always been a fan of the Golden Gophers growing up. Watching all the border battles with Wisconsin, getting insanely hyped to bring them down. It just felt right to me to go here, close to home. I have an insane amount of respect for Coach Fleck and what he has done with the program and the community. When I got the call from him that they were interested I knew right then there was no way I would go anywhere else. Playing here made it so my family could continue to come to my games and support me, and the program was extremely good to me, offering me anything I could possibly need to succeed. They got me on the right nutrition plan, got me studying in the right way, just truly set me up for success and I could not be happier. I will always be a Golden Gopher at heart."
They will miss you I am sure. You were an integral part of that team, in fact we just spoke with Coach P.J. Fleck about you. He had this to say about you; "Matty is a great kid. You will never find someone that works as hard as him. He was always first one in last one out mentality, and you could tell from the way he played on the field. We will definitely miss him here, but I know he will do great things with whoever is fortunate enough to take him in the draft."
"Coach Fleck has a way with words, you should have heard some of his speeches in the locker room at halftimes. We were all able to succeed there with the guidance he gave." - Matthew
Alright, Matthew, wrapping up, what should teams know about you if they were to draft you in the upcoming DSFL draft?
"Like coach Fleck said, I am always looking to improve as much as possible. I aim to work as hard as possible to replicate the success I had in my career so far. I love this game, I love playing and practicing. I've met many people that I consider life long friends thanks to having been able to play this game. I can't wait to get into the locker room again, and hit the weights with my new team, whoever that may be. Whoever drafts me will be getting a steal, no matter where I go. I can guarantee you that. You will be getting my 110% effort on a daily basis and I can't wait to prove myself to the world."
Well said Matthew, to any team that is looking to bolster their secondary, take a good hard look at this tough Minnesota kid. Matthew is going to be a force in the league for many years to come, and we all cannot wait to see how his career pans out!
