The Carlito Crush Diaries
Entry #5 – The Draft Process
Dear Diary,
The Draft has come and gone! What a wild ride that turned out to be for sure. The last few weeks were insane, as I poured over rosters and tried to figure out where I’d be playing football next season. I must say, I was a bit disenchanted at first. I didn’t hear from a few teams at all. It was almost like they didn’t care to talk to me or something. I don’t think that’s the smart way to run a team. You should get to know all of the top prospects because you never know who will fall and who won’t. Leading up to the draft, the only teams I had heard from were Norfolk, Portland, and San Antonio. I didn’t hear a peep from Kansas City, Chicago, and Tijuana. While I think Tijuana could have been fun, what with Dad’s wrestling background and they’re called the Luchadores, I wasn’t too keen on living in Mexico. So I’m okay with that. I grew to not like Chicago very much from the playoff game we had against them, and once I heard about the shaky management over there, I didn’t mind not hearing from them either. As for Kansas City? I wouldn’t have minded hearing from them at all, but hey, they can’t all be winners eh? Needless to say, leading up to the draft, I was pretty confident I’d end up in either Portland or back to Norfolk. Both seemed quite interested in me. Some mock drafts had me going very high in the draft, and I was an outside shot at first overall! I didn’t think that’d happen though. While it’d be the smart move for some lucky team, I know people value QBs more than Tight Ends, so I kind of figured that’s why Tijuana never reached out to me. BUT THEN! Norfolk traded for first overall! They had just gotten done telling me they wanted to bring me back! This was it! Right? I spent the last hour or so before the draft really contemplating if that pick trade up was actually for me. I didn’t want to be too cocky, and tried to stay humble, but I was also excited just in case. But no, I know they needed a Quarterback, and Wolvie Justice was available. Stupid QBs. Although, Portland DID pick second, and I had been in contact with them all day. They really wanted to boost their offense, and they even asked if I’d consider playing WR if needed (which I would, of course!).
Finally, the draft started. Justice went to Norfolk like I figured. It was a little bit of a bummer for sure but I understood. I immediately sat up in the green room. Portland was on the clock. This was it. As they got to the podium I got a little cocky and started to get up, but then they announced the selection of John Wachter, WR. That brought me back down to Earth a bit. The final 4 picks in the round were by teams that didn’t contact me, save for San Antonio at pick #5. Tijuana took the monster DT Egor Medved at 3, and KC took Andre Bly Jr. at 4. I’m pretty sure KC didn’t contact me because they knew I’d be gone before their next pick and they always wanted Bly. Which he’s sweet, so that makes sense. San Antonio was on the clock and they took this bum from Michigan, Bastion Barnhardt. He’s not that good, and we tore his ass up in THE GAME back in college. They’ll regret that one over time, I’m sure of it. Fuck Michigan. Anyway, my last shot to go in the first round was to Chicago, and they took Fresh Booter, another WR. There goes the first rounder dream. Now, I really had no idea where I’d be going. Tijuana picked next and took Ryan Sierra to shore up their OL. Portland was back on the clock at pick 8, and they RUSHED to the podium. While I was busy wallowing in self pity for a moment, I vaguely heard the words “Portland selects Carlito Crush, Tight End, Ohio State University”. There it was! I was drafted! I got on stage and got my sweet new hat and jersey, took some pictures, shook the hands of my new bosses, and hugged the commissioner. What a ride that turned out to be for sure.
Before I knew it, I was whisked away in whirlwind of media meetings. I met with the Portland GMs who were ecstatic was there at pick 8. They told me that they went back and forth between Wachter and I for days at pick 2, and finally settled on Wachter only because I mentioned in our talks that not too many teams were scouting me. They felt I had a better chance to fall than he did, which was fair. I mean, they nailed it, so I can’t argue it. They’re so pumped that they completely upgraded the offense by basically getting their top two guys on the draft board and made some nice trades that they told me we’re going to light it up on offense this upcoming season. Before I knew it, I had an interview with the local Portland radio sports guys, and they were a riot. After that, I was called to be on the official DSFL radio show to talk about the draft and how happy I was to go to Portland. I got on the show and talked about all of the important things, like just how making a fantastic culture in the locker room is important. We really want to have the guys feel like a family and play for each other, not just for themselves. Player retention is so important, we don’t want guys leaving the team for stupid reasons. I was finally off the air there, and I could breathe for a moment.
There it was, the DSFL draft. I’m a Portland Python, and I could not be happier. I can’t even imagine how crazy that NSFL draft is going to be next year!
