Leading up to the draft in a couple of days the 2 most asked questions i get are: "Where do you want/think you will be drafted" and "Are you going to be attending the draft"
The first question is easy. I am not sure where I think I will be drafted. A couple of GMs have expressed interest but nothing is set in stone. I want to be drafted by a well-run organization with an active locker room. I have no qualms about this being the Development League as I need development to get acclimated to the speed of the pro game. I need to hone my skills. I need to learn how to follow and how to be a leader both on and off the field.
The second question I most often get is "Are you going to be attending the Draft". The answer to that is a hard NO. I might dial in but the day of the draft is going to be packed. My Godfathers (yes plural) each have a personalized sendoff for me on this big day.
First up is my Dad of course. One of the things he drilled into me early in my life is rhythm (he really wanted a drummer after his last drummer quit to became a rabbi). We will spend the day jamming to old MouseRat songs and Dave Matthews Band Covers while watching college football games. We will play catch and run routes in the yard to burn off a most epic burrito lunch. All to remind me who I am, where I have come from, and that family always needs to be an important part of my life.
Chris - He says that Literally the most important things are a healthy body and a healthy mind. He has been my running coach through my career and he says that we are going to "Run with our Minds" that evening. He has cleansing foods, drink, and music (no epic guitar riffs here). We will meditate and imagine ourselves running through the things that stop us. Chris will give me the mental fortitude to take all challenges head on.
Ron - He says that it is tradition to have a big steak dinner and a great whisky to celebrate any good fortune and being drafted will be the biggest fortune to date. He also says that a good juicy steak will counter any of that rabbit food crap that Chris will be serving so I need to enjoy his send-off after my activity with Chris. After the meal, we will be up at one of his cabins fishing to remind us that we are a small part in the world but yet we are stewards of the land and of ourselves.
Tom - Tom says that now I am an adult i need to do adult things and nothing like "Those Grandpas" had planned for me. We are going to Treat Myself Pre-Draft Party. First, we will be going suit shopping. After we are looking good we are going to get massages. And after we are feeling good it is time to hit the town up. This includes high end martinis, cigars, sushi, and crème brûlée. Then off to the Glitter Factory to "close the town down right". Tom wants me to remember that I am a star now and that I need to feel, look, and act like one.
I think the Mayor also has something for me. So, I guess I will go over to Gary’s house for something. Hopefully I can get that out of the way quick though so I can enjoy the rest of my day.
