As a recent draftee in this years DSFL draft, I was taken at #23 Overall by the Portland Pythons. Pairing up with quarterback Austin Roenick and TIght end Glenn McPoyal and two defensive studs with Norman Bagwell and Egan Winter, the future looks bright for our young team. However I went at #23 overall (6th round), not a terrible position but certainly not near the front of the pack. I am here to tell all the prospects for next years DSFL draft why going late in the draft can be a very good thing.
first of all, the suspense may be painful. You'll probably hate it but when your name finally is called there isn't a better feeling in the world. I mean who doesn't love a little bit of suspense right? thinking if this is the time you'll get drafted or if you won't get drafted ever, can be quite exhilarating.
Another reason it's not so bad is because not much is expected out of you, so you can come out during the preseason and regular season showing the DSFL GM's why they should've picked you up as first rounder. This can also set you up for a lot of awards, I mean would you rather vote for the 1st round prodigy with 29 touchdowns or the 9th round Mr. Irrelevant with 29 Touchdowns for MVP? Long story short even if you perform slightly above average no one will be disappointed! (Now just FYI for all you DSFL GM's I don't intend on being mediocre, I plan on getting 100 yards per game!)
The next reason going late shouldn't get you depressed is because you will have high draft pick teammates all around you. Like in my case, I will have the legendary Austin Roenick throwing me the ball so that's an easy 200 yards per game! Without you going super high in the draft it opens up the playing field for your future GM to pick up some high quality talent, to match well with your own. It allowed the Pythons to pick up Norman Bagwell in the first round of the draft who will be an invaluable asset on the defensive side of the ball.
Another reason you should be happy that you went in the lower part of the draft is that you can always brag to the people picked above you that you are better than just a little bit more. You can have a good laugh teasing them about how you won ROTY and you were only a 8th round pickup compared to them who were picked up in the later rounds. For example in the future I will be teasing Storm Woods how I was 1000x better than him and taken multiple rounds after him, and he can't do anything about it! Well I have to be better than him first...and that's the hard part.
All in all in order to really make all of this work, to be known as the steal, to have the bragging rights... You have to put in the time and the work to be better than the guys taken before you. Be the next Tom Brady, be the kid no one knows and wins it all. There is no better feeling in the world than winning when everyone said you couldn't. That's what I'll be doing in Portland, coming into this draft only Portland seriously scouted me and i'll make sure the rest of the league knows they should've done their research.
Good luck future late rounders and never forget that the only person holding you back is you. Not your draft position.
