Week 2 Thoughts
On the road again and this time against a new division rival in Kansas City. They are still in the middle of their rebranding so we traveled to play them in the old stadium in Kansas City. I was excited to see how the number 1 pick in the DSFL draft would do against us after some adjusting to his new team for a bit.
This game was close and we were all hyped throughout the game. Coyotes managed a couple field goals in the first half, but our offense couldn’t get anything going. I think Roenick will need a bit longer to adjust to the pace and style of play here in Portland. He had a tough time finding Aaron and Storm, but did manage a touchdown in the second half to give us hope. I was happy to see John Goose getting loose on the field and I think Borro Gore is slowly learning the Pythons offense through Goose’s mentorship and play. The two of them have been working closely and I think Gore is going to turn into a powerhouse once he learns the playbook better.
Our defense did the best it could against the run heavy play of Kansas City. We got winded towards the middle of the third quarter and just couldn’t keep up with Marcus Robinson who scored 2 quick touchdowns to put them up 20-3. A late touchdown by Aaron and we were a bit closer and needed to really clamp down on defense. Speaking of defense, I think we’re getting a lot better but no where near as well-oiled as last season. Having Cameron Taylor as our strong safety really provided the run support we needed against a strong team like the Coyotes. Ruckus is getting there and he’s been speaking with Taylor when he can through the Pythons mentorship program, but I think Bobby needs some more time to grow. That’s pretty much the theme of this season: We need time to grow! I’m really proud of our linebacker group and always impressed with Noah Parker as our Mike Linebacker. The guys is great at reading plays and moves almost as quickly as our new linebacker bot Frank Pettigrove. Collins absolutely stepped it up for 4 tackles and 3 tackles for loss. I was actually having a hard time with the Coyotes offensive line and only managed 2 tackles and a sack. I really struggled this game for some reason, but I think it opened those tackle opportunities for Vernon and Collins to find their way through.
So starting the season 0 and 2 isn’t great. I think we’re definitely off to a slow start, but like I said: we need time to grow! Our identity last season was built on the best passing offense in the league and pass rushing defense and right now we’re still trying to find what works for us. It’s definitely frustrating to see some of our new guys struggling since they all had great success in college, but the coaches are great at reminding us what we need to focus on and the upcoming weeks at hand. I’m hoping we get a win soon and finally get some wind in our sails since I can see some of the guys’ attitudes shifting a bit. They wanted to play on a championship caliber team and go 11-3 like last season, but we’re struggling a lot and the only way to get better is to train harder and smarter each week. I think we’ll get there, but it’ll take a lot of patience. Keep your head up Portland!
