Jesse Marchand is name that not a lot people know, but he will quietly become one of the best players in the DSFL in the next few weeks, I can guarantee it. My name is Anthony Martins and today we are going to be conducting a private interview with one of the finest young athletes in the S9 NSFL Draft Class. Jesse Marchand is one of the two Marchand brothers who were drafted by the San Antonio Marshals this off-season and will be suiting up for his first game tomorrow night, something he has dreamed of his entire life.
How was playing football in a french province different from playing in the states?
Well when I was in Quebec the football was not very good because not very many people played, mostly just little kids and there wasn't much to play competitively. It was bigger in Ontario, so I played a little bit there when I was in high school before I came down to the United States to play as a college athlete. Football down in the states is sooo big, everyone comes to all the games and its a big event, but in Quebec it was just some people huddled in the cold with blankets who didn't really want to be there. Lots of hockey moms and dads that were just supporting their kids. In the USA, it's friends and family and people you don't even know, its super exciting to be on the field.
You played with your brother your entire career, and now again in San Antonio. How does that feel?
Playing with Blake has been awesome. We're very different people and our builds are very different so we were useful for different things in football. He's a receiver and I'm a linebacker which basically the exact opposite, but I'm glad I'm on his team because it wouldn't have been fun to play against him because he's so fast and has so much agility. We're going to be a good team, and I'm really excited that me and him get to work together again this year.
Was San Antonio your top choice in the draft?
I didn't talk to any teams because I joined really late so no one really got to talk to me at all. I was surprised that I went so early but there wasn't a lot of linebackers so that's probably why I did. The Marshals are super cool and it's been really fun to be in the locker room even though I don't stay around much after practices. I've been quietly getting better because I want to show the team that I was worth the pick they used on me.
Are you planning to play in the NSFL right away after you get drafted?
I don't know, it'll mostly be if I'm good enough and if the team wants me too. I don't know if I want to move right up or keep playing in the DSFL right now but if it's the right time of course I'll move up. It would be fun to get really good and play a bunch of seasons in the DSFL and be a monster, but that's not always the path you should take.
What's your personal goal for this season?
It might seem kind of crazy but I want to set the linebacker sack record, whatever it is. I think that I'm good enough and the team around me is good and will help me get to that goal if I really try. We have something great in San Antonio and if we all work together, the individual players will do good anyways. We're going to be the best team in the league no matter what and our defense and tackling will be a big part of it.
What is your goal for the team this season?
I want to win the championship trophy. If we don't I will be really upset because this team is so good and we honestly have all the guys that we need to make a run for it. Mostly I just want to be a shut down defensive team that teams struggle to put points up against, and to have an electric offense that will just dominate our opponents. We already did really good in pre-season, we went undefeated and I think that just shows how the rest of our season will be.
Do you have anything to say to your fans back home?
I think you guys should have been at that field watching me be great, because when I come back to Quebec with a championship ring I will know that I did it all by myself and that no one was there for me when I played in Montreal. I love the city and I love the people, but I am doing football on my own. I love the support that I have been getting now that I'm going somewhere, but no one was there when I was on my hands and knees digging to make a career.
