After a long 8 seasons, the Yellowknife Wraiths have finally won their first Ultimus. One of the key players in that effort was linebacker Micah Hendrix, who wasn't even on the team at the start of the season. He came in and acclimated himself quite quickly to the new system, posting another great season in which he logged 20 pass deflections, a record number for a linebacker. But, in what is becoming a pattern, Hendrix had his biggest game of the season in the championship. If you recall in the S7 championship, Hendrix made possibly the biggest play of the game when he intercepted Mike Boss deep in Otters territory. Not only did this kill the momentum of possibly the best offense the league has ever seen, but the Liberty went up by two scores just a few plays later, a deficit the Otters weren't able to make up. In that game, Hendrix also had five tackles and a sack. He was absolutely all over the field, making plays left and right. Although there maybe wasn't one play specifically like that interception for Hendrix in this year's championship, his presence was certainly felt as he made 6 tackles and a sack, forced a fumble and broke up four passes. He was all over the field and was a big factor in breaking up a ton of plays. Yellowknife knew they were getting a stud player when they traded for Hendrix midseason, but I don't think anyone expected him to steal the show yet again with such a talented defense around him this time, including DPoY candidate Boss Tweed.
We got a chance to talk with Hendrix briefly after the game and here’s what he had to say about the season and his second championship: “It was a weird season, really weird. I mean with the Liberty we had fought so hard to get the championship, to be the first NSFC team to do it too. Then all of a sudden the wheels fell off. I was spending some time away with my family when my agent contacted me saying I had been traded to the Wraiths, it was so surreal. I’ll be honest I still don’t know all the details of what went down, but I’m glad that I was able to land in Yellowknife and yeah I’m pretty happy with winning another championship. Some of these guys I absolutely despised when I came into the league, I think I just had a bad attitude and a chip on my shoulder, but we’re all good friends after having played in the league for so long. The team and the fans have welcomed me with open arms. I’m more than happy to finish out my career here.”
Hendrix has become the Legarette Blount of the NSFL, switching teams and still bringing home a Championship in back to back seasons. It seems like he'll be staying put in Yellowknife for this upcoming season, which will bode well for the Wraiths as they try to become the third team in league history, next to the OC Otters and the Arizona MultiTucks, to win consecutive championships. Though he's made it clear that this next season will be his last, if Yellowknife can make it to the Ultimus game again they know Hendrix will be ready to light it up one more time.
