Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Longshaw has declared for the S14 DSFL draft. This news comes as a surprise to many, with Longshaw only being a junior in college and yet to start any games for the Commodores. Nonetheless, he remains confident that now is the time throw his name into the ring. With the recent news that the DSFL is expanding to include two new teams that prospects have previously been ineligible to join, there is likely some merit to Longshaw's self-belief, if for no other reason than the increased demand for players.
To veterans of the NSFL, the name Longshaw is sure to be a familiar one. Ben Longshaw, Jay's father, was drafted by the San Jose Sabercats in the league's inaugural draft, before going on to have a checkered career that ended in his unexpected departure from the league. Ben Longshaw went on to dabble in player management, having a hand in the early success of recently retired Colorado Yeti superstar Howard Miller, before the young wide receive parted ways with his manager shortly after being drafted.
In regard to being tarred with the same brush as his father, Jay says it is expected, and doesn't bother him at all.
"I know people will be hesitant about my future, given my dad's history in the league. Those close to him know that it was a personal decision, and one that was less of a surprise than what league sources would have you belief. Those close to me know that I'm determined to be the best ever, and who my father is or is not has nothing to do with that".
Despite doing his best to assuage feelings that he isn't a reliable long-term prospect, Jay is yet to address the fact that he hasn't been able to beat out Vanderbilt's current starting quarterback, Johnny McCrary. There is some speculation that current head coach Derek Mason is a Sabercats fan, and holds some resentment towards Ben Longshaw - and in turn, Jay - for abandoning the team. Whether there is any truth to this rumour remains to be seen.
All that DSFL general managers can do at present is take Jay on his word (or not), and hope that if they draft him, he becomes the player for them that he is adamant he will become.
