Holy crap this is an absolutely massive draft class. Excuse the break from character but had we secured a 40 person draft class I would have been floored. We've got almost double that right now. Unreal results and I can't begin to tell you how I excited I am for the opportunities this has created to inject some new personalities and new experiences to a league I've been a part of for the last 2 years. Now, let's get down to business.
I know many of you new draftees do not know much about this league, its history, or many of the people in it. That's completely understandable as there is a lot of stuff to pick up on. By extension that means a lot of you don't understand a lot about the DSFL team that I am the GM of, the San Antonio Marshals, so I'll give you a quick rundown of what we are about.
I took over this team a few seasons ago, it was originally founded by the legend known as Kckolbe (RIP sweet prince) and a guy I'm sure you are all very familiar with @iamslm22. The team changed hands a few times as most DSFL teams tend to do, it's a great place to learn how to be a GM of the big leagues so many times the DSFL GMs move on and up to bigger and better things. (On that note, apply for those co-GM positions, don't feel like because you are a new guy that you won't be considered!) Anyways after a few other guys ran the team, I got a hold of it and took on my long-time teammate @Bwestfield as my co-GM.
The Marshals are a fairly successful organization within the DSFL, it's a tough environment to thrive in given the high turnover of your best players as they move up to the pros. Although we haven't won as many championships as other teams, we're usually in the mix. This season we were the regular season champs but lost the conference championship to the underdog Tijuana, it sucks but it happens. Either way we're still very proud of our accomplishments every season and are never a team that can be counted out.
We like to pride ourselves on having a dominating rushing attack and a stifling defense. This season you may have noticed our lead rusher set a league record of over 2500 rushing yards in a 14 game season, shattering all previous records. It's a wonder he survived this season. Although a single rusher isn't my usual MO, often preferring a committee, we were limited on available backs and thankfully Boija rose to the challenge. But next season Boija is moving on to the pros and we will be looking for our Bellcow of the future.
It's not all just running backs we need though. San Antonio loves defense. My first DSFL draft I drafted 4 defensive ends, I think there were only 5 available to be drafted. Maybe 6. And safeties? Corners? The faster the better. I like my secondary to be the fastest in the league and my linemen to be the fattest. I like my linebackers to be strong and fast with good hands. I love building new guys into defensive monsters.
And just because we're a run first team doesn't mean our offense ignores the passing game. With a capped QB on the roster we are looking just fine through the air and we like an efficient passing game with deep throws, but we need some new receivers. Fast and good hands, that's all we need. We like our tight ends the size of mountains with good hands and good run blocking skills. They don't need to be all that fast but it never hurts either. If you aren't built like this right now, fret not, we have plenty of time to get you there. My job as a DSFL GM is to help you become the best player you can and I love doing it.
So why am I telling you all this right now? Why don't I DM the prospects and talk it out with all of them individually? Well, because time is not on my side at the moment. With my current schedule IRL I have too much on my plate in the next 2-3 weeks to dedicate the massive amount of time necessary to properly scout draftees in the DSFL. I might try and reach out to a select few based upon some specific needs or concerns, but some people I flat out don't need a questionnaire filled out to know how badly I want them to be on my team. I check who is active in discord, I check who is doing ultimus week, I check who is writing media and making sigs. So while you're sitting there feeling like Will Smith saying "Why don't the Marshals want me man?" (I think the Ultimini trophy is saying that too), don't worry, we do. I just gotta finish moving across Atlanta first.
So while you're getting to know the other GMs of other DSFL teams and falling in love, just keep us Marshals in mind in the back of your head. We're looking to build a monster of a team out of this draft and there is not a single position we are ignoring (even QB, I don't mind benching myself). I love to share my knowledge and experience with our sim and with this league with any players, those on my team or those who are not, but it's a lot easier to share that when they are in my locker room. Thanks for those who made it to the bottom of this nonsensical article and thank you guys for giving this league a shot, I know I personally have had a lot of fun here over the years and have made some pretty great friendships and we're psyched to have that many more people to share in what we've built.
