*With the fifth overall selection in the S15 NSFL draft, the Austin Copperheads are proud to select… Chase Jensen… tight end from the Palm Beach Solar Bears*
Every single time I hear that playback, I’m just filled with emotion. It’s validation that all of the hard work I put into making myself a better athlete was worth it. There are just no words to explain how I feel to be totally honest. The fact that I was selected in the first round just blows my mind. The fact that I am the first selection in Austin Copperheads history blows my mind even more. I mean, this really is the definition of living the dream. Not many athletes get to this level of play and I just feel really blessed to be in this position.
There are some people that I would like to thank for helping me get to where I am today. First of all, I would like to thank my parents because without their eternal support and dedication there’s no way that any of this happen. I would also like to thank my coaches from high school and Stanford for turning a basketball player into an elite level football player. I know that it wasn’t always easy and that I made some mistakes along the way, but they always stood by me and supported me and helped make me the man I am today. Next I would like to thank the coaches and the general managers in Palm Beach for giving a kid from the bay area a chance. Tight end isn’t the flashiest of positions, I know that, the media knows that, the fans know that. But it didn’t deter you guys from seeing my fire and passion for this sport and in my first season as a pro I finished in the top 5 in receiving. Finally, I would like to thank the general managers of the Austin Copperheads for seeing me for what I am… not just a professional tight end, but a leader in the locker room and on the field. I honestly can’t wait to put that jersey on and go win an Ultimus or ten.
I still remember that phone call. I remember my cell phone ringing and looking down and seeing that Austin area code flashing on the screen. I almost couldn’t breathe I was so nervous to pick it up. Finally, I hit answer…
“Hey is this Chase? This is the general manager of the Austin Copperheads. We were super impressed with your interview and performance this last season. We’re going to pick you up here at 5, hope that is okay with you. Congrats on becoming a Copperhead. Let’s go get it.”
“Yes sir, I can’t wait to get out there. You haven’t made a mistake, let me tell you that. You ask me to do anything and you know that I am willing to do it. No worries, you guys just made the best pick in the draft.”
I know that these thoughts all seem kind of random and disjointed, but I just don’t know how to express everything that I am feeling at the moment. I remember talking to every single GM that had a draft pick before I was selected. First up Arizona is on the board… they go with Landers. They had indicated at the time of my interview that they had a lot of needs so I knew that I probably wouldn’t end up there. Then New Orleans had two picks in a row where they went with Slothface and Bode. Again, I had a nice conversation with the GM of New Orleans and am a little bit surprised they went with 2 linebackers, but they are both great players and will make a dynamic duo in the future. Then at 4 the Yellowknife Wraiths took Nero Alexander. Out of the first 4 selections this was the one I was most shocked that I didn’t go to. We had great conversations and they did tell me they had other needs as well, but I think I’m the best player in the draft. Honestly, no disrespect to any of the GMs that didn’t draft me, I know it’s a tough job to draft, I get it. But hear this and hear this now, you done messed up. You messed up in not selecting me because now you are going to get burned by me season in and season out. Every single game against the Copperheads you are going to be pulling your hair out saying “why didn’t we go with Jensen.”
All of this being said, I’m ready to get going with the Copperheads. We’re going to be on a mission when we hit the field and there’s no stopping this hype train. Hiss hiss motherfuckers because the snakey bois are coming for you.
