I will always remember the day I was drafted by Portland 17th overall. I knew I wasn't the most scouted rookie in the class, but I knew I had a shot to go in the high rounds. In the days leading up to the draft I was contacted by almost every GM so I had a good feeling I would be chosen somewhere in the first few rounds, but I really thought I would go to Myrtle Beach just because the fit seemed right.
In the first few minutes of the draft, they took my rival Jeffrey Lavert 4th overall instead. I understood the pick, it was a safe pick, he's a great player, but I still think my ceiling is higher. In the 2nd round they chose another CB Dax Frost, and again, I understood, he was highly touted coming in. Then I saw it happen, Portland traded their 2nd rounder and somehow banked 3 picks back to back to back in the 3rd round and somehow I just knew that I would become a Python.
I saw stud defensive prospect in Perry Tucker Jr and Kubee Krusher taken with the first 2 picks of the 3 in a row, and somehow it just felt right that Portland would rebuild their defensive core with one round in the draft class. They needed a CB, I was the best damn one left available and I was already standing up before my name was announced. And sure enough just like that I became one of the strangling Python D.
I was welcomed into the locker room and the team immediately and we had such high hopes, we were part of a rebuilding core that focused on defense first. I was able to slide right into the top of the depth chart.. and most importantly, I was able to show all my haters and fans alike that I belonged in the league.
Then came to prospect bowl... finally a chance to face off against my fellow draftees in a tournament where I could show case my skills. That 2nd game, I just knew i had to prove myself and picked up an interception and returned it for a touchdown for good measure. Had to show the other GMs that I was the real deal and that they should have picked me sooner if they wanted a true shut down corner back.
Unfortunately, I think that moment was the highlight of my career in Portland things went south in a hurry after that. There was a delay in our preseason, we didn't even play one due to logistic errors or some such. So I just stayed home and hit the gym whenever I could to see when I could get my first taste of DSFL football for the next 4 weeks. I went to the NSFL preseason games just to see what I would be up against next year as well, it's never too early to scout the competition or your future teammates.
Next came the season finally, or so I thought, only to be told at the last minute our season opener was delayed again due to malfunction and we couldn't get to Kansas City in time. It just seemed like the league itself wasn't run properly, later on there was news about some situation regarding the commissioner of the NSFL and that overshadowed the DSFL and it's players as well. It was just a really hard time getting situated in professional football. I didn't care for the drama, I just wanted to play.
Finally, we started the season after a lengthy delay and things just didn't feel right from the start. There were players on the field that I didn't think belonged on Portland anymore. I mean I remember seeing some NSFL guy I saw in preseason dressing up in our locker room and taking the field with us. The refs just let it go on and I was like.. damn, it's an anything goes type of league here. The locker room was great, and we tried to make light of the situation and wanted to keep our spirits up.
Then came the hammer, just out of the blue the GM and co-GM of the Pythons resigned out of no where.. suddenly my support system was taken out from under me. I didn't know what to do, I did what any good soldier does that fought for my GM. It was just a somber mood and we still had to play our game against KC again right after we found out the news that 2 former players would be taking over the GM duties. As could be expected we lost our next 2 games by a wide margin as I feel like the locker room just wasn't the same after dealing with situation after situation.
I stuck it out as long as I could, and I just wanted to have fun again and play football. I requested a meeting with the new GMs and asked for a trade. I wasn't not happy in Portland, but i wasn't totally happy either, I told them that if they could find a team for my trash talking ass, that was a fair deal for them as well, then I would respectfully request to be traded to said team. If they were not able to find a suitable deal in terms of value for them to continue what they're trying to build in Portland then I would stay and continue to be a part of their vaunted strangling defense.
As luck would have it, the new Portland GMs took my request seriously and quickly worked out a deal to send me to Myrtle Beach. I was over the moon, I knew a couple of guys on that team from before football and I was extremely excited to join their No Fly Zone defense. Jeffrey Lavert and I even put our history behind us and wanted to join forces to become one of the best secondaries the world of football has ever seen. Being mentored by Kacey Dream in that locker room as well, it's everything an aspiring corner back would want. While I am excited to start my next chapter in my football career with Mrytle Beach there is one last thing I want to say...
Thank you Portland. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for believing in me enough to draft me at 17, Thank you to the players and the fans who support this team. Under the new leadership I believe they will flourish and the future does look bright. I've made some friends in that locker room that will last a lifetime and I truly cherish those moments. While my career in Portland did not go as I would have liked or envisioned, I will always be thankful to have been drafted by the Pythons. There is no hate from me here.
