NSFL Mock Draft
The S21 NSFL draft is right around the corner. Why not take a moment to analyze the class of rookies and do a little mock draft? This class is huge, producing over 100 prospects across all positions. With that being said, only the first two round will be mocked in this article. Let us begin.
Round 1
Pick 1:
The Otters come into this draft having the first overall pick that they got in a trade with Chicago. The top end talent is deep in this class and Orange County has their pick of the litter. The offense is clearly not an issue here as they managed to score 28.5 pts/g this season. The defense is what kept them from advancing further in the playoffs. With a lot of defensive talent in this draft, the choice will not be easy for them. With that being said, the Otters will select:
Prince Vegeta – S
Vegeta was a key piece to the Myrtle Beach defense that broke DSFL records this season. This is a no brainer of a decision as the Otters are lacking at the safety position and Vegeta is the top talent in the class. No need to draft on need because the best player available is the need. He is also a heavy clubhouse guy and has connections to the team already through star cornerback Kacey Dream.
In 14 games, Vegeta accumulated 129 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, 7 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
Pick 2:
The Sabercats had a lack luster season and missed the playoffs. The good news for them is that they have two first round picks to help rebuild the team. Vegeta going 1oa is not an issue for the Sabercats as they have other needs around the field. Their biggest issue is on the defensive side of the ball giving up 32.5 pts/g this season. They need to start building a good line of versatile players to bolster that defense and win games. The Sabercats select:
Holden Summers – LB
This is a toss up between two players, Summers and Quaid. The linebacker position is one that San Jose desperately needs. Summers game is more versatile than Quaid and that should work well with the system San Jose looks to run. Summers is a great all-around player being able to play in any role that the team desires.
Summers put together quite the DSFL campaign, ending as Ultimini champions with Minnesota. In 14 games Summers managed 83 tackles, 7 sacks, 9 passes deflected, 1 interception, along with a forced fumble and recovery.
Pick 3:
The Liberty are looking on the up and up. They pulled out wins in close games including one to the now Ultimus champion Copperheads. There is still much to build upon on this team, but they have a lot of young talent that will progress in the coming seasons. Their biggest issue is the offense and is primarily in the running game. They have some versatile pieces that they slot around the field. Even through they need a running back, I think they select a player on the defensive side of the ball here. The Liberty select:
Douglas Quaid – LB
The Liberty are looking to take either Summers or Quaid, whichever would fall to them. With San Jose selecting Summers ahead of them, Quaid is the pick here. Quaid is a heavy tackler who uses his hands effectively. He’ll be ready to make an impact right away on that defense.
In 14 games Quaid put together 144 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 3 passes deflected, 1 interception, and 3 forced fumbles with 2 fumble recoveries.
Pick 4:
The Sabercats addressed a need on defense earlier this round. They could potentially trade this pick, but I think that they keep them and pick up an offensive weapon. With star tight end Cameron Olsen nearing the end of his career, San Jose looks to add a young tight end talent to learn from the veteran. The Sabercats select:
Leon McDavid – TE
McDavid started off slow with the Buccaneers only getting a few receptions through the first weeks. His production has skyrocketed as of recent and is one of the top offensive talents in this draft. San Jose loves their tight ends and McDavid is one of the best in the class.
McDavid managed 45 receptions for 445 yards and 2 touchdowns along with 18 pancakes and 1 sack allowed.
Pick 5:
Baltimore has a lot of quality talent still on the team. Offense is not the big problem here. They have lots of talent on that side of the ball and could grab another piece, but the defense is what needs to be addressed here. The Hawks defensive line is thin. They need to get solid tackling on the line to pressure the opposing quarterback. The Hawks select:
Otis Allen – DT
Allen is a no brainer pick here. A top of the line talent on defense, Allen looks to improve on his stats from his time in the DSFL. Having a solid tackle will greatly improve the Hawks defense and Allen should slot right in.
In 14 games Allen had 33 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, a forced fumble, and a blocked punt.
Pick 6:
The Butchers need a lot of things. They sold away some draft capital for players and picks. This was their landing spot in the trade with Orange County so it could be worse. Chicago has a fantastic passing game and one of the best duos in Jenkins and Espeeyeeseetee. What they lack is a run game. They had the worst run offense and defense in the league this passed season. The Butchers select:
Dax Frost – RB
Frost swapped to running back late in the season and looks to shake up the league in season 21. He is the top ranked running back coming into the draft. He will provide a much-needed boost to the offense and give some variety to the teams strategy.
Frost does not have any stats at running back.
Pick 7:
The Yeti were a surprising team this year. They managed to make it to the conference championship but fell to the Yellowknife Wraiths. The Yeti have a poor pass defense having given up 265.5 yards per game which is 8th worst in the league. There are issues that they need to address in the backfield and there are plenty of prospects to add to the roster. The Yeti select:
Matt Murphy – S
Murphy is a solid pick here. He’s primarily played free safety but could transition to strong safety to better fit the team needs. He’s on of the better backfield players in this draft and will surely help the Yeti team for years to come.
Murphy, in 14 games, has 77 tackles, 2 for loss, 1 sack, 17 pass deflections, 7 interceptions, 1 defensive touchdown, and a forced fumble and recovery.
Pick 8:
New Orleans is in an interesting position. They managed to slide into the playoffs and make it to the conference championship where they fell to the Austin Copperheads. Their running game is strong and is their primary source of offense. What they need is help on the defensive line and backfield. Their weakest position is safety, but their best options are already off the table. A defensive lineman is likely the pick here. The Secondline select:
Immanuel Blackstone – DE
Blackstone is the best edge rusher in the class. He has the speed to get around the offensive line and pressure the passer. New Orleans is looking for a player to strengthen that line and Blackstone looks like the guy to do it.
Blackstone had 71 tackles, 22 for a loss, 9 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, and a safety.
Pick 9:
The Wraiths surprised everyone this year by making the Ultimus, but they lost it to the Copperheads. They have a solid defense to pair with a top of the league offense. They lead the league in offensive yards per game and should not be focused on improving that. Their issues lie on the defense, mainly the line. They need a solid defensive lineman to hold down the fort and get the ball back to the offense that has been lethal all season. The Wraiths select:
Trevor Mouseman – LB
Mouseman has been a huge factor in the Myrtle Beach defense. Mouseman has been tearing it up on the defensive front, sharing the team lead in tackles with projected first overall Prince Vegeta. The Wraiths have a good linebacking core but could always use another solid talent to hold down the opposing team’s offense.
Mouseman had 129 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 pass deflections, and a forced fumble in 14 games.
Pick 10:
The Copperheads surprised everyone by taking the Ultimus just a season after loading up on talent through the draft. After a surprise retirement by Sexjoke, they are looking to add talent at the safety position but also look to nab themselves a high-octane corner to help that backfield. The safety market is slim so the corner should be the pick here. The Copperheads select:
HeHateMe PickSix – CB
After starting the season in Portland, PickSix was traded to Myrtle Beach midseason where he promptly caught fire. He proved to the haters that he was worth that early pick in the DSFL draft and that it was simply the system he was in.
PickSix ended the year with 35 tackles, 5 interceptions, 19 pass deflections, and a blocked punt.
Round 2
Pick 1:
Defense is the area of biggest improvement and this is where Chicago will pick their cornerstone of the defense. Their needs are on the edge and in the backfield. It’s a toss up of what they will choose here but it will certainly be an impact player for them. The Butchers select:
Chip Otle – DE
Otle is a fringe first round talent. Most of the players selected were based upon need while still searching for the best player available. Otle should be able to help the struggling Chicago defense improve to hopefully not be last in the league in the coming seasons.
Otle ended the year with 40 tackles, 13 for a loss, and 7 sacks.
Pick 2:
The Sabercats have another huge hole they need to repair. Their backfield is lacking in the cornerback department. There are still plenty of talent to be selected here that will certainly address the need while also getting a solid player for the locker room. The Sabercats select:
Rotticus Scott – CB
Scott has been in the strong safety role in Myrtle Beach but is a natural corner. With the top talent dwindling in the secondary, this pick seems like a no brainer.
Scott ended with 49 tackles, 1 sack, 2 pass deflections, and a forced fumble and recovery.
Pick 3:
This is where things could get interesting. The Otters hold yet another high pick in this round from trades. With some of the top offensive targets aging, they need to pick up some young talent to fill the void left by the veterans. The Otters select:
Chris Kross – WR
Kross was a beast in the DSFL this year, being the top receiving target. Being put into a system that favors the pass will certainly help his career even further. This could be a huge steal at this draft position.
Kross finished the year with 43 receptions for 622 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Pick 4:
The Outlaws finally get their first pick here. They traded out of the first round but managed to load up in the middle of the draft. The Outlaws just missed out on the playoffs via tiebreakers. They are looking like a force to be reckoned with in the future with rising league star Jay Cue at the helm. Their offense has been a bright spot, but they have lost some close games due to their defense. Getting a solid player on that side of the ball will be key to their future success. The Outlaws select:
Perry Tucker Jr – LB
Tucker is a solid choice here. He’s been a key piece on the Python defense that was, for lack of a better word, terrible. He did show up and played some of the best defense on the team which is why the Outlaws should be looking at him.
Tucker Jr accumulated 97 tackles, 7 sacks, 9 pass deflections, 1 interception, and 2 forced fumbles in just 12 games.
Pick 5:
The Hawks should be looking to pick the best player available here. There is still a ton of talent on the board, so it is just a matter of preference here. Another offensive weapon would be the likely pick here to me. The Hawks select:
Jerome Davis – WR
Davis was a star for Minnesota as they made their way to back to back Ultiminis. Having a solid quarterback will do that to any receiver and why not slot him in with one of the leagues best? He’s proven to be productive on the field and work in a solid system.
Davis finished the year with 42 receptions for 541 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Pick 6:
We are back to the Outlaws now who are also likely looking into the best player available. They have a bit of a need on the defensive side of the ball, but they could very well go for another offensive weapon for Cue to use. The Outlaws select:
Dorfus Jimbo Jr – DE
Jimbo Jr is a good pick here. He’s a proven player on and off the field. The Outlaws have a need on the defensive end, and this looks to be the pickup for them. Jimbo should be able to pressure the passer and get a solid number of sacks each season.
Jimbo Jr collected 32 tackles, 15 for loss, and 6 sacks.
Pick 7:
The Yeti have a choice here; do they snag a top defensive player or go for the offensive weapon. With how the season ended, I think they go for the offensive player here. This should be an easy choice for them as it’s one of the top talents still on the board. The Yeti select:
Osiris Firestorm-Fjord – TE
Firestorm-Fjord had a lack luster year stats wise in Portland but it’s no question that he is a top talent. Him falling this far is simply based on position. Not many teams use tight ends to a high degree. This looks to be the best landing spot for him as he will look to help the Yeti on both the line and as a receiving target.
Firestorm-Fjord racked up 38 receptions for 258 yards and 1 touchdown.
Pick 8:
The Secondline are in a position where they can really start planning out their future. With some of their stars going to start regressing, this is where they will draft a key piece of their future. The Secondline select:
George O’Donnell – QB
This is their quarterback of the future. No better time to pick one then here and no better one to pick than O’Donnell. The season wasn’t very good for him, but he has the potential to be a star in the league. Despite lack of team success, he was still solid in the pocket and is the top quarterback in the class.
O’Donnell went 141/321 (43.9 completion percentage) for 1339 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.
Pick 9:
The Wraiths are looking for a future defensive cornerstone. They should be willing to wait until now to pick that player up since this draft is loaded with talent. They have plenty of talent on the edge and in the backfield but what they lack is a lockdown man on the line. The Wraiths select:
Rapid Eagle – DT
Eagle is 100% the pick here. A solid piece on the defensive line that will certainly keep that shutdown defense alive for seasons to come. He has some surprise speed for a middle of the line player.
Eagle had 47 tackles, 3 for a loss, and 11 sacks.
Pick 10:
The last pick in this mock draft belongs to the Copperheads. They look to add to either line here. Both are in need of some improvement and it’s going to be a bit of a surprise pick at this spot. The Copperheads select:
Simon Tremblay – OL
Tremblay is the best offensive lineman in the class hands down. He came into the league a little late and his stats reflect that. He should be a fantastic pickup at this point in the draft and will certainly work to protect the team’s quarterback and open space for the running game.
Tremblay played 12 games and had 19 pancakes but allowed 2 sacks.
This was a fun article to create. This is all my opinion and judgement. I very well expect to be completely wrong come the actual draft. If you do not see yourself on this mock draft, please do not feel offended. Only 20 players can be selected in the first round and these were the ones that I thought fit that pick best. I hope this is fuel to many of the draftees to improve and get their draft stock even higher before the picking begins. Thank you.
