It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these but it’s time for an update from the Liberty rookie phenom Randy Vuxta.
To begin the transition from Tijuana to Philadelphia was a tough one. I had created ties to great players that I would no longer suit up with and some I’d have to suit up against. I left Tijuana one win away from a championship, something I have yet to experience as a wide receiver. I was given an amazing opportunity with Tijuana to be able to stay as an offensive coordinator for their program and in our first year it was a bit rough but we are looking forward to the future and our heated rivalry with the well respected Myrtle Beach Succanears. I was also given the duties of taking over the social aspect of the team through managing our teams Twitter presence.
Let’s jump forward to draft night. My nerves were off the charts. Many mocks predicted me going between third and eighth overall but I knew that I wouldn’t fall past Philly. Hell truth be told I already had my plane ticket to Philly in my suitcase I was that certain I was going there. I knew Kyle was a lock for the first overall pick so when he was called I was extremely excited for him but I was not surprised. Then at pick number four I heard my name and it was confirmed: I was going to be a liberty.
After the draft I was able to meet my other draftees and the rest of the team. Had to say goodbye to one of our picks as they had been selected to stay down in the DSFL for a season (I welcome you back this season) to develop a little longer. But I was ready to get onto the field and prove that I belonged. Or at least I THOUGHT I was ready.
I struggled my first few weeks transitioning to the NSFL game and how it was different then the DSFL. Luckily for me my team still had a strong run game so I was able to continue to work on my ability to run block and create some space for our Star back. But the receiving game just was not clicking. It wasn’t until mid season that I was able to turn it back on and got my catches and even started scoring some touchdowns. Some key weeks for me this season include:
Week 1:
First game in the NSFL and thankfully it was a win. My rookie debut was pretty good as I had 3 receptions for 62 yards but wasn’t able to find the end zone for a score. That would come later in the season. I finally felt I was on a team where I would be able to get some yards, as in the DSFL I seemed to be a red zone target.
Week 3:
Had my first real game as a wide receiver, posting 77 yards through the air. Still didn’t have that touchdown yet though. This game started me getting over 70 yards in 3 of the next four games.
Week 7:
Our team got absolutely demolished this week but for myself I will always remember it for one reason: I finally scored a touchdown. We were losing 27-10 at that point but I didn’t care because for me I had finally made it.
Week 8:
Got to play my old buddy Kyle Idlewyld (and the eventual champs) and we beat them. I love the guy but beating him did put a smile on my face. Oh I also scored my second touchdown to prove the first wasn’t a fluke.
Week 9:
Had my first of many two touchdown games. Now I barely had any yards that week but I was able to find my way into the end zone twice.
Week 11:
My high in receiving yards this season with 90 yards through the air. Not only that but I also was able to score a TD as this week I was the number one receiver for our team (sorry Nacho. Your game was next week.)
Our season sadly ended without a chance at the playoffs. I was especially upset because I put the blame for the loss on myself as in the last game I had only one reception for thirteen yards and it came on the last play of the game. Maybe if I had done more in the game or even the first half of the season we would’ve been able to come away with at least a playoff game.
So now as I sit here reflecting on my first season, I only see the ability to improve. Next season will be even better as I am able to bond with my QB for an entire year and we should get more next year. I have yet to hit my peak and am working even harder to getting there.
Also awards committee, if I don’t receive a single vote for ORotY we are going to have some serious problems. I may not have had a good start, but I finished extremely strong. Just give me one vote and we will be good.
