Jackets28 took some time out of his schedule to interview CB Chester Sweets, who recently went 0-2 in the Prospect Bowl with his team, the Cincinnati Jet Hawks.
1. Overall, it seems that the CB position is a very saturated position in this draft class. Do you feel that your Prospect Bowl performance helped you stand out or do you feel that you might’ve slipped away?
It didn’t help me stand out in any good way, that’s for sure. Don’t get me wrong, I got quite a few tackles in. But that’s not my job. That means I’m giving up too many catches. And let’s be real. We didn’t play well. We gave up way too many points and laid two fat eggs. Don’t get me wrong, its a part of the process and I’m glad to be here participating, but this was not my best showing. It hurts playing like this so poorly with the run up to the draft, but that’s just how it goes. I’m gonna keep working, being active, finding the best S22 guys to work with before we get with our teams. It was disappointing and frustrating, but I play corner. We lose matches sometimes, its inevitable. Gotta get back to work and get better. And that’s what I’ll do.
2. What should GMs know about you as a prospect that may not be obvious right away? Something that would help people know the real Chester Sweets?
Well, that’s tough. Like all the S22 draftees, I’m trying to put myself out there for GMs, show them what I’m capable of. I think I’ve been doing that. If they are paying attention, they know I’m working. I’m curious, I ask questions, I want to learn. I’m ACTIVE. This S22 draft class is huge and I’m taking it upon myself to find ways to not only get involved myself, but to really get other new players involved, too. The more we all work and get involved, the better it will be. I know corners sometimes get that “diva” label, and don’t get me wrong, you’re not gonna hear me be very quiet on or off the field, but my main goals are bigger even than the football field. I hope GMs understand that I am bigger than the DSFL. Not as in a cocky way, but our universe is massive, and I can’t just be one of the guys who says “I am nothing without football.” I LOVE this game, its given me so much, but understand the enormity of what I, and we, are doing out here. Its not just 11 versus 11 on 100 yards of grass.
3. Do you think that there are any teams you want to be a part of? Someone you think has a missing piece that you can fill?
There’s a lot of great teams in the DSFL and the draft process has been a blast. Its such a quickly evolving league, though, too. Trying to find a play where you can be that missing piece is tricky, especially for just a season or two with such high turnover. Really, I want a place that’s gonna help me get acclimated to the NSFL while challenging me to be the best I can be. I’m a leader. Other folks may not know that, yet, and that’s okay. My home is my castle, so I’m going to do whatever I can to make it comfortable and supportive, for myself and for my teammates. And then when we go to battle, its all out war, take no prisoners. I’m not a mean, nasty guy by any means. But between those lines, I have a different perspective. I’m coming for blood. No, we aren’t high-fiving the opponents before the game. I’m only helping my teammates up. Respect? You better earn that in these 60 minutes. And even then, I’m not your friend. See, that’s the thing. I’m not just some soft ass MFer who wants everyone to be friends, and I’m not a cold-hearted, anti-social dude. There’s a time for each, and I’m gonna lead my family wherever they need.
4. If there was a redo of the Prospect Bowl, how much better do you think you could do? Was all that you can do all on the field?
Man, let’s run this back! For real. We didn’t play well. That’s it. No excuses, nothing special, we just didn’t handle business. And that’s not me. I got GOT in that first go-round. If we did that again? No way that happens twice. Besides, you gotta look at this games with some skepticism. Anyone who tries to get too excited about a couple games with a team you’ve barely been with, they don’t know football. Its the ultimate team game. No way we’re gonna be at the top of our game with such little preparation. Anyone wanna argue just doesn’t get it.
5. What do you think is the best and worst part about the Prospect Bowl?
The worst is easily the short amount of time. We just don’t get to really know our teammates and schemes properly. I’m a tape guy. I watch it like crazy. On myself, my opponents, my TEAMMATES. I know what’s going on on the field. You take that away from me? No surprise the outcome isn’t what you wanted. You only used like ? of what football really is. The best part, no doubt, is just getting into pro ball. This is a dream. We all want this. It was just a taste though. I’m so damn excited. Oh, and the team names/uniforms. They were so bad. Who wants to be on the Poodles? Who wants to wear white on top of yellow? I’m not quite sure who approved those, but it was something that made me laugh everytime I considered it. I love how they go goofy over these exhibition games. But I’m ready to do it for real.
