Just before the week 5 match that brought the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers to the Dallas Birddogs Tom Sofa was listed on the injury report with the designation Questionable: Illness. This comes a surprise as it was reported 2 weeks earlier that he had completely recovered from the coronavirus, and it immediately put many in the league on alert as having had competed in 2 games and possibly exposing others to whatever this mysterious illness may be. Because of this the league demanded he be re-tested immediately to see if the league had to yet again be delayed and tested as it previously had to in the infamous week 1 debacle. Fotunately for Tom, his teammates and the league he again tested negative, but what was this mystery illness he contracted?
Sofa first started feeling ill that practice on Wednesday and later it evolved into something much more. The doctors initially thought it may have been a reinfection of the coronavirus since the virus is known to evolve rapidly and some cases have been seen where a recovered victim would "re-catch" the deadly disease. However, this is not the case here, doctors worked tireless hours to discover the secret behind his illness. After days of research it was concluded that he had contracted London Fever. He apparently caught the disease in his recent outing when playing the London Royals. An unnamed player on the Royals carried the disease and transmitted it to Sofa during the game, and strangely enough Sofa was the only buccaneer to contract it.
The player's immune system was compromised because of the coronavirus which made it easier for Sofa to become sick. After recovering from London Fever the very next week sofa saw himself back in the Hospital with walking pneumonia ruling him out for week 6 as well. As of now there is no timeline for his return as with such a bad immune system there is no way of knowing if he will fully recover in time for week 7 or even beyond.
Sofa, who has been playing great as of late, will be sorely missed by the Myrtle Beach lineup. His stats so far this season include an 11/17 completion ratio, a 64.7 completion percentage, for 140 yards in just 2 games this season. He has one touchdown to show for it and tops the league in passer rating with 109.9 rating. Much is on the horizon for the young La-Z-Boy as he looks to continue his great performance when he finally fully recovers and bring Myrtle Beach to an Ultimini.
