Week 12: Minnesota @ Portland
The third game of week 12 sees the 4-7 Minnesota Grey Ducks travel to Portland to take on the 6-5 Pythons at the Snake Pit. The second meeting of these two teams, with Grey Ducks able to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter of their week 5 game to walk away with a 14-10 victory.
The Grey Ducks would receive the kickoff to start the game, but would go 3 and out, unable to get anything going against the Pythons defense. Bloodenheimer would take the field and punt the ball 56 yards with Portland’s offense starting their opening drive of the game at their own 33 yard line. They would string together a 14 play drive ending with a 28 yard field goal attempt which Steppy would be able to convert. Pythons will be disappointed not to come away with more after being penalised at Minnesota’s 1 for an illegal shift. Dick Daniels would then sack O’Donnell for a loss of 11 yards to put the Pythons back to Minnesota’s 17.
Trailing by 3, Minnesota would receive the kickoff and look to respond. They pick up a first down with SnonBow connectiing with Wolfcastle for a gain of 21 yards. This would push Minnesota out of field goal range with Bloodenheimer returning to the field to punt. The punt would land in the end zone for a touchback, so Portland’s offense would receive the ball at their 20 with a little over 2 minutes left before the first quarter. Their drive would ultimately stall at Minnesota’s 47, with the Grey Ducks defense holding strong.
The second quarter would begin with a punt with Steppy punting the ball inside Minnesota’s 20. The Grey Ducks would start their first drive of the second quarter at their own 12. Pythons would move to Minnesota’s 12 and on a 3rd and 4, O’Donnell would be picked off by safety Sebastian Vettel. This would be the closes either team would get to scoring with both teams unable to put up any points in the second quarter. The teams would head into half time with Portland leading 3-0 in a defensive battle. While unable to get much offense going thus far, the Grey Ducks should be happy with their defense who were able to come up big plays in their red zone to prevent the Pythons form adding more points on the scoreboard. Portland will be disappointed not to capitalise on the opportunities they had, having been unable to crack the Grey Ducks red zone defense. With a close game, where both defenses have been able to contain the offenses, no converting on the opportunities they had in the red zone could prove to be costly.
The second half would get underway with Portland receiving the ball to start. Looking to get some offense going, the Pythons would be gifted 5 yards after the Grey Ducks were flagged for encroachment. Nakamura would be handed the ball and be able to get the first down with a yard rush. Disaster would strike for Portland with O’Donnell throwing his second pick of the night with Sackson Senior able to return the interception 41 yards for a touchdown. With Bloodenheimer able to make the extra point, the Grey Ducks would lead 7-3. This would be the only points in the third quarter with both teams offenses unable to get anything going, punting the ball back and forth with both defense effectively shutting down each offensive drive.
Early in the fourth quarter, Minnesota would find themselves with a 4th and 6 at Portland’s 34. The Grey Ducks opted not to send out their punting unit and instead kept their offense on the field, stay aggressive. Finally, having some success this drive and picking up yards they went for it on 4th down. They would be unable to convert with Lloyd Collins making his way past Minnesota’s offensive line and sacking Vega for a loss of 6 yards. Trailing by 4 and starting at their own 40, Portland were in a good position to put some points on the board. Their offense would find some rhythm as they made their way to Minnesota’s 12. Once again the Grey Ducks defense would be tested but would ultimately be able hold with the Pythons settling for a field goal attempt after Vettel brought down George 3 yards shy of the first down. With Steppy able to making the 22 yard field goal attempt, the Pythons would cut the lead to 1 with just over eight and a half minutes left in regulation.
Minnesota’s offense would return to the field at their own 15 yard line. They would go 4 straight rushing plays to pick up 6, 7, 8 and 5 yards, picking a couple of first downs and taking time off the clock in the process. With a 1st and 10 at their 41, Vega would attempt a pass to Brooks which would be Pythons corner Kehla would be able to bat away. On 2nd and 10, Skuff would be handed the ball and rush for a gain of 4 yards. Needing 6 yards to convert on 3rd down, Perry Tucker Jr would make his way into the backfield and sack Vega for a loss of 6. Minnesota would punt the ball, giving Portland the ball back with under 5 minutes left on the clock. Pythons would start at their own 39 and would march their way down into Minnesota’s territory. They would find themselves at Minnesota’s 12 yard line with two minutes and thirteen seconds to play and call a timeout. A field goal would be enough to win it for Portland which would also effectively end Minnesota’s chances of making the playoffs. Existing the time out, the Pythons offense would take to the field with a 1st and 10 at Minnesota’s 12. O’Donnell would throw the ball to Snyder but Grey Ducks corner Bo Jangles would read the play and make the game ending interception. The Grey Ducks would run the clock out keeping their playoff hopes alive. Their defense came up big and kept them in the game throughout with the Pythons offense unable to make any inroads in the red zone.

Minnesota win 7-6 on the road and improve 5-7 on the season and return home for their must win game against the London Royals. Their playoff hopes still alive but will be reliant on results needing to go their way to make the playoffs in the DSFL North. The Pythons fall to 6-6 and will rue the missed opportunities in the red zone. They will look to regroup and rebound in their week 13 matchup which sees them travel to Dallas to take on the Birddogs. Portland are still in control of their own destiny but will need to bring their A game if they as Dallas remain in contention for a spot in the playoffs in the DSFL South.
