Howdy NSFL!
As you may or may not remember, I had sign-ups for what would be an ongoing wide receiver edition in analyzing their statistics and talking about their impact on the game to give them a chance to be featured on a possible weekly or bi-weekly basis throughout this season in the NSFL.
We had a great turnout with 16 users who signed up to be on this list!
What I want to start off with is talk about each of these players, in order that they signed up and talk about what the off-season had in store for these players! We will break this into 2 based on time constraints and talk about the first 8 users that signed up this time and then talk about the next 8 sometime later in the week!
WR Tychondrius Hood @Tylus
When sign-ups were first posted, Hood was a stand out receiver for the Grey Ducks playing in what would be his final season in Minnesota. Hood was a stand out last season for Minnesota as he ended up tying for the league lead in receiving touchdowns with 7, being 2nd in the DSFL in receiving yards with 835 and also finishing 7th in overall catches and average yards per catch, including the 2nd longest catch of the season by any DSFL receiver.
Where is he now?
Hood was invited to the Season 23 NSFL Draft and was drafted in the first round by the San Jose Sabercats. A team that saw another one of the people who signed up for this list depart in free agency, they were in need of another big man wide receiver. Hood, a speed receiver, enters the Sabercats roster as a tremendous complement to breakout player of the year award winner and a wide receiver of the year finalist in Deondre Thomas-Fox. Hood's potential speed along with Thomas-Fox's ability to be more of a possession receiver will be a huge threat for newcoming QB Monty Jack. Welcome to the Sabercats Tylus!
WR Kai Sakura @DarknessRising
We head back to Minnesota with this one to a player that was Hood's running mate for the Grey Ducks and served as more of a secondary target on the team which is no slight to Sakura in any way as the Ducks had a ton of receiving talent last season for SnowBow. Sakura finished the season with a respectable 32 catches for 349 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season which was 3rd on the team in each category.
Sakura was also drafted in the latest Season 23 NSFL Draft and ended up going in the 2nd round at 22nd overall to the Yellowknife Wraiths. In a stacked draft, Sakura still goes in a good spot here but likely will stay in Minnesota to take over the reigns as a top receiving option with Hood now gone as Yellowknife is working with an aging receiving core. Sakura looks to be an important piece for the future of the Wraiths' offense as they will head into the post Bigsby era.
WR Asher Quinn @Dewalt27
Another person that is tied to the Minnesota organization as Quinn is the player of the user who is general manager of the Grey Ducks. Quinn however is not currently a Grey Duck and is a current player for the Baltimore Hawks in the NSFL and is about to enter another season as a main target for their young team. Quinn last season in Baltimore standards had a tremendous season with 34 catches and 407 receiving yards in addition to 5 touchdowns. Now you are thinking that those are underwhelming numbers for a number one target right? However, when you dive a smidge deeper, you see that Baltimore only threw 9 touchdowns on the season so Quinn had over half of those and was responsible for a good chunk of their catches and yards as well. Quinn will enter another year with growing QB Chika Fujiwara and looks to improve a lot as a main option on the team.
WR Nick Kaepercolin @Highhaschdi
We get to a player not affiliated with the Grey Ducks in any manner to my knowledge now with the talented young receiver for the London Royals and now the Baltimore Hawks. We have some overlap from our previous player Asher Quinn as Kaepercolin is going to be joining Quinn in a new look Baltimore passing attack. Last season, Kaepercolin played his final season in the DSFL with the London Royals and had one of the better seasons out of all the wide receivers there. Kaepercolin amassed 62 catches, good for 3rd in the DSFL as well as 797 receiving yards which was good for 4th in the league. His 5 touchdowns technically have him tied for 3rd amongst a few different players and while his yards per catch sat just outside the top 10, he is credited with the longest catch of the season with a 51-yard catch and run last year. Kaepercolin joins Asher Quinn and Chika Fujiwara with a young passing attack and Kaepercolin seems like he will be the 2nd wide receiver on paper.
Videl-San @ValorX77
Our 3rd season 23 draftee wide receiver here showing the talent of the class is no other than Videl-San who played his DSFL football with the Portland Pythons. Videl-San was part of a decent but not great passing attack in Portland and stood as the 3rd or 4th receiving option on a team that liked to spread the ball around a lot at times. Videl-San finished the season with 33 catches for 371 yards and 3 touchdowns which had him tied for 2nd in catches on the team. He also 2nd on the team in touchdowns and 3rd in yardage. Certainly though he is capable of much more.
Where is he now?
Videl-San was drafted by the Austin Copperheads in the Season 23 NSFL draft, taken at the end of the 3rd round at 36th overall. With a quality receiving core currently in Austin, the expectation is that Videl-San will spend another season down in Portland and assume a larger role in the offense as a top target on the team, whether that be first or second remains to be seen.
WR Daymond Brooks @ForSucksFake
Back to the Ducks again with this one! Daymond Brooks is a talented wide receiver who is also a draftee by one of the newest NSFL franchises, the Honolulu Hahalua. If Tychondrius Hood was 1A in Minnesota, Brooks was definitely 1B as both players had just about the same amount of impact on their team's overall passing game. Last season Brooks finished 2nd in receptions, yards, and touchdowns for the Ducks and was 10th overall in the league in catches, 5th overall in the league in yardage, and technically tied for 2nd in touchdowns. His final numbers were 52 catches for 766 yards and 6 touchdowns and his 14.7 yards per catch were the highest on his team, beating Hood by .1 yards in that category. The Hahalua seem to have a young receiving core so it will be interesting to see where Brooks plays this year. My guess is that he gets one more year of development in Minnesota where he can be the superstar and then comes up as an even bigger threat but he could play in the NSFL immediately if he wanted to.
WR Action Jackson @KillaScrilla
One half of the beastliest WR duo in the NSFL, well, er...former half of that same duo, Action Jackson comes in next and is our most experienced wide receiver we have mentioned so far. Last season, Jackson was certainly the 1B to Deondre Thomas-Fox's 1A but many of times it was more of a 1A and 1A sort of deal depending on the game and the opponent. Action Jackson finished with 63 catches and 989 yards while also adding 8 touchdowns through the air as well and in addition, spent time as the team's punt returner as well as despite his large size and slower frame, he was and is very agile and strong. Jackson ended up 8th in the NSFL in catches, 6th in yards and technically 2nd in touchdowns but also 4th as the only ones ahead of him had 11 touchdowns.
Where is he now?
Jackson had been struggling in his career to this point in terms of making the playoffs and with a new quarterback incoming for San Jose in Monty Jack with Wright's retirement, he decided it was time to play elsewhere. Citing an easier road to the playoffs and a chance to complete, Jackson decided to head to Yellowknife to play for the Wraiths despite a regressing offense and regressing QB in Cooter Bigsby. The AFSC is the tougher of the conferences for sure so heading to the easy conference seems smart. Despite him breaking up our duo, I will miss him in San Jose and wish him the best of luck.
Eddie Jeeta @QuirkyTurtle
Jeeta is next on our list and another young wide receiver to add to the list even though we deviated a bit to talk about veteran Action Jackson previously. Jeeta is a member of the Copperheads and just wrapped up his rookie season in the NSFL. Jeeta, despite being ultra talented found in hard to crack into a consistent rotation early on in Austin, spending a lot of times in the slot with start receivers Tidwell and Net Gaines along with running back Ryan Leaf Jr. to complete for targets with. On the season, Jeeta did not add a ton of statistical impact but was still a weapon that may have helped concentrate some defenders towards him. He finished the season with just 15 catches for 141 yards and added 3 scores through the air. 20% of his catches were touchdowns so he added some redzone ability to the Austin offense. Look for him to snag a bigger role in the offense this season with Leaf Jr. being gone and Tidwell regressing even more.
That is our first 8! We will revisit these players as the season kicks off so we can analyze stats and impact on their teams and in the game in general. We will look at the next eight players later on this week most likely to wrap up the off-season reviews for all these wide receivers.
We will be looking at the following players next!
WR Dre Matthews @Confictional
WR Benoit Blanco @xQCFamous
WR Luca Scabbia @enigmatic
WR Jackson Kingston @Daybe
WR Nate Swift @Bigred1580
WR William Alexander @morsy
WR Joshua Campbell @Buttersqauch101
WR Sean Snyder @DatSmolBoi
I look forward to continuing this series and hyping up our wide receivers here in the NSFL and DSFL as there are players from both here and we have a good mix of players. We can compare with others in the same league as well as some cross comparisons such as which players have a bigger effect on their team which at least shows how important a wide receiver is on a team.
I will also likely compare all these players to my own, Deondre Thomas-Fox who was one of the top wide receivers last season though I fully expect a bit of a down year with a new rookie QB. Should be interesting to see!
Thank you all for reading and be on the lookout for the next articles in this series!!
