Hey Y’all, it’s ya girl here, Daria Guava-Fresca. I wanted to share with you the start of a series where I look at our beloved NSFL and DSFL cities and share some of my favorite places to visit within each city. This doesn’t mean that they are the only and the best places to go and visit, but they are definitely some of my favorites.
Today we’re going to talk about the Norfolk Seawolves of Norfolk Virginia.
Sitting on the coast near the Chesapeake Bay, we obviously have to start with seafood. I will stand by the fact that fresh blue crab is better than any other crab out there. They’re a little smaller, sweeter, and just oh so delicious. If you can get soft shell crab anywhere, please do it. You will thank me. Outside of that, fresh oysters, crab cakes, and more, finding seafood joints throughout this area of Virginia is great.
Personally, I like to travel a little north and eat at some of the historic restaurants in Williamsburg, as well as eat and stay a night or two at the Tide’s Inn. Sitting in Irvington, Virginia, the Tide’s Inn is a resort like no other. It sits right on the Rappahannock River, feeding into the bay. You can sit, enjoy an incredibly delicious meal and watch the ships, and the tide come in.
Looking for some restaurants in Norfolk, you can’t go wrong with Saltine. While it’s a little higher end and more expensive, when you’re already visiting new places, you sometimes have to treat yourself to the best food and not let price be a problem. The seafood here is incredibly fresh and delicious, and I think that you’ll find that everything is unique and amazing as you sit down to eat it. They try to keep everything in their restaurant as local as possible. I really recommend starting with their pork belly and having the Virginia Blue Crab Cake as your main meal. Nothing beats some Chesapeake Bay and Old Bay seasoning.
Next up are the botanical gardens in Norfolk. I love plants, and the botanical gardens are beautiful. Currently, they have an artistic Lego brick exhibit throughout their gardens, and I really recommend you check it out. There is a large lovely fountain, and many people have held their weddings here. It truly is gorgeous.
The beach is another great visit, especially early in the morning or late at night. As you look at the beach you can choose to see the sunrise or the sunset. I find that waking up early and having a morning run along the beach, watching the sunrise is the best way to start my day. It makes waking up early totally worth it. There are a couple of great parks nearby these beaches and you can be sure to find some space, as the sun comes up (or sets).
There is always the zoo, and I love seeing and learning about any animals that might exist in a zoo. I really recommend going through the Australia Walkabout exhibit. You get to spend time in the animal exhibit for an up close and personal view of the wallabies, emus and cassowaries. Keep in mind, though, that they are still wild animals, and while they are generally okay with visitors inside of their exhibit, you are invading their personal space bubbles. You want to be as chill and calm as possible to not upset or stress them out in any way. The Virginia Zoo also has a great set of gardens and flora to experience, outside of just the animals there. If you’re feeling worried about the animals at all, there is also the Animal Wellness Campus which educates and shares how they provide nutrition, exercise, hygiene and enrichment along with other animal wellness to their zoo residents.
If you’re into history, and especially naval history, the Norfolk Hampton Roads Naval Museum is an excellent place to visit. And if you don’t have the time to get there, they have some directions on their website for how to build an amazing Lego ship based off of the USS Maine. There’s also a great walking trail if you want to enjoy a nice day out called “Cannonball Trail”. Approximately two hours, this trail shows you many of the historic places in Norfolk, including some of those that are rumored to be haunted. It’s engaging and you can always start and end your walk anywhere, so I promise if you’re feeling bored, it’s easy enough to hop out and head to one of the local restaurants for some more fried oysters instead.
If you want a bit more of a challenge, there are many different escape rooms in Norfolk as well. This is a great way to spend time with your family, but also a great way to spend time with your teammates. It’s easy to see who will crack under pressure when they feel that time is running out and you’re never going to leave! I don’t think that you can go wrong visiting any of the escape rooms in Norfolk, but then again, I’ve been able to successfully leave each and every escape room there. Maybe you won’t be so lucky (or smart).
Finally, one of my last recommendations for your visit to Norfolk is to check out some of the haunted places within the city. Especially if you visit around Halloween, you’re in for a treat. There are a lot of haunted sites, ranging from the Episcopal Church to the Norfolk Jail and even the Battleship Wisconsin. Check out some of these historic sights, and you might be lucky enough (or unlucky enough) to catch sight of something a little unexpected.
Well, those are my recommendations for what you should do in Norfolk. Remember, this is just my personal opinion, sights and restaurants I love to hit whenever I’m down there. It doesn’t mean these are your only options, but when you’re going to a Norfolk Seawolves game, and want to make a nice weekend of it, here are a lot of options that you might enjoy. I know I do.
