Philadelphia Liberty WR Lincoln Jefferson was involved in a late night car accident driving home from team’s official draft party. While many draftees were up late celebrating, the veteran wide receiver was fighting for his life at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ.
The Philadelphia Liberty draft party was being held at Xfinity Live Center next to the stadium complex in Philadelphia. There were several Liberty players in attendance, along with the stars of other Philadelphia teams, and local celebrities. The party was a great experience for those in attendance, with the Liberty receiving glowing draft reviews from fans and experts alike. The party officially ended right after the draft, around 12:30AM. Lincoln Jefferson left the draft party shortly afterwards at approximately 1 AM. On his way home, he smashed his car into a highway divider on 76W. At this time, excessive speed and distracted driving appear to be the cause of the accident. Jefferson’s cellphone was found in his hand when first responders arrived on the scene. We do not have an official speed, but based on the wreck Jefferson had to be driving well over the posted speed limit of 55mph. Thankfully there were no other passengers in the vehicle.
The NSFL player suffered critical injuries to his lower extremities. Doctors were forced to amputate both of his legs just above the knee. Without his natural legs, sources from within Jefferson’s inner circle have stated that he will be fitted with prosthetic blade-type legs, similar to South African runner (and likely murderer) Oscar Pistorius. Due the injuries sustained, Jefferson will no longer be the towering 6’6” figure he once was. Doctors have said he now roughly measures in around 6’1” with the prosthetic legs on. While doubts remain at his ability to return to the gridiron, some within the Philadelphia Liberty organization have speculated that Jefferson will return. Some insiders have gone on the record that Jefferson may consider a position switch since he longer carries the same frame he found so much success with in season 1. Family members that were inside the hospital have said that Jefferson is angry about the accident, and has the desire to return to the field and harness his anger against his opponents. At this time, there is no official word on if or when Jefferson will return to the football field.
When pressured for a quote Philadelphia Liberty Co-GM, North Fox stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with Lincoln and his family right now. Football comes second right now, but we certainly hope a player of his caliber can return and contribute somehow.”
Analysts who weighed in on the situation say that it is likely the with the blade prosthetics, Jefferson could be even faster than he was before. Since the blades are specifically engineered for sprinting, his short-end and top-end speeds will likely be higher than before. Oscar Pistorius has run a 10.91s in the 100m, 21.30s in the 200m, and 45.07s in the 400m with the blade prosthetics. He is a six time Paralympic Game gold medal winner. These results show that these blade prosthetics can be used successfully to achieve high speeds in short and longer distances. Also, with his shorter height, he should have less drag.
Experts are predicting that if the former 6’6” player can return to the NSFL, he would be better suited on the defensive side of the ball. Many have speculated that he has the skill set to line up at linebacker or maybe even as a defensive back. Only time will tell if Jefferson can return to the field, and what kind of player he will be if he ever does.
We will provide updates as this story continues to develop.
