Third Quarter. Week 4, Myrtle Beach Buccaneers at Norfolk Seawolves. The first half was remarkably even, especially considering the powerhouse nature of Norfolk and what it brings to the table. Indeed, it seemed as if the Buccaneers had played better, after going down by 14 early in part due to a fumble in their own Red Zone. After that point, Myrtle Beach had stormed back to tie the game, including an amazing 56 yard rush from the Quarterback who was previously questioning his place at the position, Owen Holloway. Myrtle Beach's defense held strong to open the second half, but a massive 70 yard punt from Melvin Murder Moose of the Seawolves pinned them within their own 5. Myrtle Beach set out to take the lead, and then, things started to go downhill.
"Holloway throws to the Tight End and it's INTERCEPTED! Might have been a miscommunication with the route, but either way the ball ended up behind Ne Mo, and that might be the easiest touchdown Rickie Vaughne will ever have, nothing but green grass in front of him, touchdown!"
Due to a missed extra point from Melvin Murder Moose, Myrtle Beach still had the ability to drive down and take the lead. Penalty, dropped pass, penalty on the Seawolves, run for no gain, 3rd and 10. Ball back in Owen Holloway's hands, it was time for redemption.
"Holloway steps back, looks left, fires, right into the hands of Jimi DeSoto! Outruns WaiverPick and Holloway cannot bring him down, that is a second pick six in as many drives! Holloway is down on the field, head in his hands, that can really only be blamed on him. He got caught staring down McJimmerson out of the slot, threw right into double coverage, and in the space of 5 minutes Myrtle Beach has gone from driving for the lead to down massively with all the momentum against them!"
Fortunately for Myrtle Beach, there was still plenty of time to get back into the game. Unfortunately for Myrtle Beach, the third quarter was not even close to over yet. Holloway, taking the ball on the ground again, pulled off a massive 20 yard run to get near midfield on the next drive. Then, the Buccaneers handed the ball off to Jackie Daytona, their other rookie QB, in order to make magic happen, not trusting Holloway's arm a third time.
"Daytona, under pressure, throws to Reed, he's been outmuscled! Dukburg Quakstak has come down with it, and Reed is unable to bring him down! Oh, but the linemen are there now, Quakstak reverses field! At the 30, has to dodge Crossley, and now Reed forces him out-no! He stayed inbounds! To the 20, the 10, and Reed catches his leg! That was almost a third pick 6 in as many drives, and I swear that the Buccaneers have been possessed by the spirit of Matt Schaub in this third quarter."
A single play, a 1 yard rush by Captain Rogers, was enough to give the Seawolves a 3rd touchdown with basically no effort on the part of their offense.
Then Myrtle Beach had the ball again. They started driving again, mostly by running the ball. Holloway made a huge difference on the ground at multiple points during the drive, and they quickly started knocking on the door of the red zone.
"Notice Mo lined up as a wide receiver on the end there, probably trying to spread the defense...Holloway takes the snap, drops back, looks around and throws to Mo, INTERCEPTED AGAIN! That's Rickie Vaughne's second of the game, though I doubt this one goes for 6, he's certainly trying his best, but runs out of bounds just across midfield rather than risking coughing up the ball."
It took 4 plays to travel the 43 yards left until the end zone, completing the tally for the 3rd quarter.
In all, the Seawolves scored 27 unanswered points during the 3rd quarter, off of 4 interceptions that required less than 50 yards total to score touchdowns off of all of them combined. Add that to the easy touchdown scored at the start of the game off the back of 3 Jeffrey, and the Seawolves scored 34 points off of turnovers, compared to the 7 that Myrtle Beach got off of a single Ramza interception. Moreover, the Seawolves high powered offense, which certainly didn't need a lot of help to blow teams out, only needed to travel 64 yards total off of all 5 turnovers combined for those 5 touchdowns, due to amazing return after amazing return. Despite getting blown out 44-21, Myrtle Beach looked like the better team at times during the game. They basically controlled the entire second quarter, and more than fended for themselves during the fourth quarter. They were able to overcome a first quarter where it looked like they were slow to arrive to the game, but the third quarter was just self inflicted wound after self inflicted wound, and as far as regular season performances go in the DSFL, this is certainly one Daytona and especially Holloway will not look back on kindly. 4 interceptions on 4 consecutive drives, all leading to touchdowns...they certainly can't be proud.
