It was a gorgeous morning as Cheese and Beer drove towards the Swenson farm whose Packer flag had been stolen. While a bit early in the season, 'Da' Thirty Point Buck' was playing over the radio and the boys sang along.
"Did ya see the t'urdy pointer?"
"Did ya see the t'urdy pointer?!'
"DID YA SEE 'DA T'URDY POINTER?!'
"Oop cheese ya missed 'da turn off" Beer said laughing.
Cheese whipped around and pulled down the Swenson driveway. It was a fairly large dairy farm, with 130 head and plenty of grazing acreage. There's three barns, a milking parlor and a 3 story farmhouse nestled in a valley surrounded by trees. A stream runs through the right side of the property and the driveway is entirely fenced off from the pasture with the exception of a channel where the cows can cross from one field into another, and there's cow-grates on either side the walkway so the cows can't run up the driveway into the road.
Though Mr. Swenson said that nobody was home, a young woman was sitting on the front porch as they pulled in. The boys pulled up in front of the house and she went down to great them.
"Hey Beer" Brie says with a smile. "... hey Cheese."
Cheese blushes. He's had a crush on Brie since the second grade and they were childhood friends. When Cheese went to college to play football, Brie stayed behind to help manage her father's farm along with her four siblings; Havarti, Feta, Cheddar and Colby.
"How's it goin' Brie, we're here to snoop around." Beer said, kicking up dust has he hopped down from the jeep.
"Did my dad talk your ear off about his flag being stolen? It's the only thing he's talked about all morning." Brie said with an exasperated sigh. "I'm going to go lay down on the davenport, milking tired me out. Let me know if you two need anything!"
With that, Brie left. Cheese had barely managed to even meet her gaze before she left. He'd had his share of dates in college, but when it came to Brie he was always left feeling like he couldn't vocalize the things he wanted to say... she gave him butterflies. The boys walked up to the flagpole, a once proud monument to great city of Green Bay now a solemn pole in stark contrast to the surrounding farm.
Overcoming his embarrassment, Cheese nudged Beer with his elbow; pointing at the ground surrounding the flagstaff. Beer immediately saw what he did and sighed. Whatever footprints or evidence of the thief there may had been had been all but erased due to some overlying footprints, specifically footprints left by a size 12 farmer's rubber boot. It seems that Farmer Swenson had erased the evidence on accident having marched around the flagpole several times in his annoyance at the theft. The boys spent several minutes scanning the area before agreeing to split up and search the property.
Cheese walked towards the backend of the property while Beer swept the frontend. Cheese was distracted, absentmindedly being on the lookout for clues but having Brie at the forefront of his mind. About half an hour passed in this manner as Cheese made his way around the barrier fence, taking care to avoid the numerous cowpies littering the pasture. As he deftly stepped over another one of these methane bombs, something caught his eye in his peripheral vision. Leaning up behind a fence post on the outside of the property fence was something metallic, producing a gleam as the sunlight bounced off it's surface. Upon closer inspection Cheese realized that it was a bolt cutters, easily capable of cutting the barbed wire fence that it leaned against. Pondering on why Mr. Swenson left something like this out, Cheese almost didn't notice his phone ringing from a call. It was Beer.
"Hey Cheese, I found the flag. Come on down to the barn."
Cheese made his way back, once again navigating the pasture carefully to avoid getting cow shit on his shoes. As he walked in through the barndoor Beer was with Brie, holding a dusty and sunfaded flag. Brie looked troubled, but her face brightened as Cheese walked in.
"I found it in a trashcan." Beer said absentmindedly. "Time for lunch?"
Cheese's stomach grumbled, the sun had gotten quite high in the sky at this point and it was likely close to lunch time. At Beer's suggestion, Brie excitedly checked her phone.
"My dad is heading back in a bit, how about you two stay and I'll light up the grill." Brie exclaimed.
The boys couldn't decline that offer, and shortly thereafter as Brie went to turn on the gas grill and grab some steaks from the fridge, Mr. Swenson's truck came rumbling down the driveway. He sputtered to a stop and hopped out of his truck beaming, as the boys had managed to hitch the flag back up to it's rightful place.
"Thanks a bunch Farley boys, where'd you find it?"
"It was sitting in a trash can over near the backend of your barn." Beer replied.
At that, Mr. Swenson frowned. "That door is locked every night. The only person who could've gotten in would be me, the Mrs. or one of the kids. Maybe Havarti is playing a prank on me."
"You were awfully upset, would she be the time to do something like that to you?" Cheese asked.
"No... she wouldn't. I can't think of any other explanation though, maybe they could've gotten a ladder and climbed through the hay loft?" Mr. Swenson sighed, "But why would anyone do all that?"
As the boys pondered Mr. Swenson's words, Brie's calls that lunch was ready came drifting through the house. Time for lunch!
